<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Overload coupling".
The present invention relates to a coupling made between the driving part and the driven part of a machine, said coupling being disengaged when an overload occurs on the driven part. The invention. is characterized, in essence, in that the transmission of torque from the driving part to the driven part of the coupling is shared between two couplings which work at the same time, under normal operating conditions, the one of these couplings being constituted by a friction coupling working constantly, under all load ratios, while the other is constituted by a claw coupling made in such a way that it transmits only part of the normal denotation moment between the coupling parts.
and that it be disengaged spon-

immediately as soon as there is an overload. The claw coupling is preferably made such that it transmits only a part of the torque from the driving part to the driven part of the machine, while the friction coupling is made so as to transmit at least the other part of the torque
The invention will now be described in detail, with reference to an exemplary embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows, in axial longitudinal section and partly in elevation, an overload coupling made between a driving shaft and a driven toothed wheel.
Fig. 2 shows an end view of the device.
The drive shaft of the coupling is designated by the reference notation 1. On this shaft is placed a freely rotating toothed wheel 2, which constitutes the driven part of the coupling. On the toothed wheel is fixed a claw ring 3, (which is shown in a special wear part), which claw ring is connected to the toothed wheel by a tenon 4 so as not to be able to turn in isolation. On a ring 5, placed on the shaft 1 so as to be able to move axially without turning, is fixed a claw crown 6, which cooperates with the crown. claw 3 and is pressed into engagement with it by a compression spring acting on the ring 5.
The claws of the crowns 3 and 6 are triangular in shape, so that they bear against each other by oblique surfaces. When the load of the toothed wheel 2 becomes inadmissibly large - for example when the parts (working parts of a harvester or other similar machine) driven by it are clamped as a result of the oblique surfaces of the claws, the claw crown 6 and the ring 5 move axially backwards, out of engagement with the crown at claws 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
As soon as the tips of the claws have passed one above the other, by the continuation of the rotation of the shaft 1, the claws again engage one in the other, to slide again one out. on the other. This makes a clicking sound, which draws the attention of the worker at the machine to the fact that something is not in order. The known couplings of this kind have the disadvantage that the claws wear out strongly by the rapid and violent shocks and can even be broken.
According to the invention, a friction coupling associated with the claw coupling is arranged between. the: driving part and the driven part of the machine.
For this purpose, in the exemplary embodiment shown, a suitable conical friction surface is provided at the part of the toothed wheel opposite to the clutch coupling; this friction surface cooperates with a corresponding oonic surface 9 provided on a disc 10 which is wedged on the shaft 1 and rests against a shoulder 11.
In the example shown, the friction surfaces 8 and 9 are pressed against each other by the same spring which influences the claw coupling.
Thanks to the friction clutch, which is constantly engaged as a result of the action of the spring 7, part of the torque of the motor shaft is transmitted to the toothed wheel. The claw coupling can furthermore be arranged for the transmission of only a part of the moment of rotation and dimensioned proportionally to it.
As a result, for example, the spring 7 may be weaker than was previously necessary.
When the toothed wheel or the parts driven by it are braked due to too much resistance and the claw coupling slips, the impacts on the teeth are not so violent, so that the teeth are not
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
are not damaged or worn as quickly. In addition, the claws may be shorter and / or at greater point angle, so that they are less sensitive to impact. The claw coupling can, for example, be made in such a way that it transmits at most between 80% and 40%, for example 50%, of the normal release moment of the shaft 1. The other part of the torque is transmitted by the friction clutch.
If the friction clutch is left constantly engaged, a certain force is constantly transmitted to the driven part. This also has the consequence of glanda advantages in many cases. If toothed wheel 2 gets stuck as a result of overloading, for example due to an obstruction or the presence of a foreign body in one of the devices driven by the toothed wheel, each time the gears The crowns 6 mesh with the claws of the crown 3, they first crack the latter and the toothed wheel to turn in the opposite direction, since the dorsal sides of the claws first come into mutual engagement.
These jerky movements of the driven parts are often disadvantageous; however, now they disappear, since the friction clutch forces the toothed wheel to turn in the correct direction.
The claw coupling can be made in such a way that it transmits, for example, between 20% and 60% (preferably 20 to 50% of the moment of inertia.
