"Perfectionnements apportes à des ensembles rotors. "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Improvements made to rotor assemblies."
The invention relates to the construction of rotor assemblies comprising a compressor rotor or SUPERIMONTOUR and a second rotor element, such as a turbine, a shaft coupling or a second compressor rotor, these assemblies being desired. hereinafter referred to as * rotor assemblies of the kind specified ".
It is applicable to the case where the first main rotor element has to be fixed coaxially and in a very rigid and robust manner, capable of transmitting a large torque and other loads to the second element and where the constitution of the together is such that it would be desirable for the second element to be able to be detached by having access to the side of the first element which is separated from the second. A typical case of this kind arises for a turbo-supercharger or a gas turbine for which an air compressor and a turbine are directly connected to each other and for which a considerable number of important factors must be satisfied. by suitable mounting and the invention seeks to. achieve these conditions in a simple and efficient manner.
In addition to the main goal, which resides in the realization of a rotor assembly, rigid by itself and residing in the loads, we have in order to make this assembly such that it can be assembled and disassembled easily CONSIDERING the envelopes, certers and other organs, of more or less complicated form, which are found in the vicinity of this whole. It is also desirable that the bearings should be able, as far as possible, to be completely removed, as complete accessories, for inspection, their replacement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
placement, etc ... and it may be preferable to leave the bearings intact even after partial disassembly of the complete device.
It is also desirable that rotor assemblies of the kind specified can be assembled, partially disassembled and reassembled in the lachise cabinet so that the balance, re-read at the beginning, can be restored with great precision simply by hand. following a correct assembly. For machines of the type in question, it may be necessary to constitute the rotor of the compressor in a light alloy while that of the turbine is in steel or a heat-resistant alloy, and capable of withstanding high tensions, these rotors having a common axis. The connection between these elements constitutes a very difficult problem if one takes into account the very different mechanical and thermal properties of the materials used.
The object of the invention is to resolve these construction difficulties and to satisfy secondary considerations which relate more especially to the application envisaged above all for the invention, that is to say a machine with a gas turbine. for jet propulsion of an airplane or used to supply power to a shaft as the main driving mechanism. For these more specific applications, it is generally necessary to drive accessories for the main rotor assembly and, on the other hand, allow the rotor assembly to be driven for starting or starting. ge.
The invention also includes a suitable construction of an auxiliary drive shaft, for use in conjunction with the main rotor assembly and for which the difficulties of achieving extremely precise alignment are avoided, while this shaft also plays a role. important role when the machine has to be disassembled or assembled, in that it acts as a kind of key or key while after final assembly it is used, moreover, as a locking device.
In order that the invention may be easily understood, its object will be described as being applied to a roor assembly comprising, mainly, a centrifugal impeller and a single cantilevered turbine wheel, it being understood, however, that these members may be of a different nature. Thus, the impeller can be axial flow or the turbine can be multistage.
In accordance with the present invention, the two main rotor elements forming part of the rotor assembly (i.e. the paddle wheel and the turbine wheel) are removably assembled to form a self-contained assembly. rigid and suitable for transmitting engine torque.
The invention consists, mainly, in providing in one of the elements (the paddle wheel) a bore or axial passage and in mounting on this element a hollow shaft (called tubular shaft) suitable for being connected in torsion and with a fine alignment and location at one shaft end mounted rigidly on the other main rotor element (turbine wheel) said shaft end extending axially and being fixed to the tubular shaft by screw means which are accessible through the bore of the first element or through this bore and preferably that of the output shaft.
An immediate advantage, obtained by this arrangement, is that the turbine, the end of the shaft and the ens.ble of a bearing which can be mounted thereon, are removable or replaceable without having to remove the impeller of the machine or engine and simply having access to the end of the impeller, which is spaced from the turbine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In addition, according to the invention, the screwing means, referred to above, are constituted by a shaft or a nut extension, crossing the bore of the first elegant (paddle wheel) and of which one end (the one closest to the other unit, for example the turbine) carries a nut or threaded member while its other end is preferably housed in the bore of the output shaft of the additional members such as only claws or grooves allowing it to rotate during assembly or assembly.
This output shaft is preferably supported so as to be radially immobilized in a coaxial bore of an annular member occupying an exact position relative to the impeller. also according to the invention and when it is desired to provide a driving transmission to and from the rotor assembly, considered as a whole, for example to obtain an auxiliary actuation or for starting, a connection is made. auxiliary drive, in the form of an auxiliary shaft which is loé in the bore of the shaft so protruding therefrom.
The inner end of this auxiliary shaft acts as a tubular key for one of its se3 functions. Getes end in the form of a hollow cylinder whose actual face carries two series of grooves or spaced claws. It also carries, on the outside, a series of grooves., Which have a different shape from that of the internal grooves to constitute a kind of vernier, as explained below, On the front end of the extension d For the nut, which passes through the impeller, there is provided a series of external splines which correspond to the two series of the auxiliary shaft. The axial interval existing between the two series of splines of the auxiliary shaft is slightly greater than the axial length of the splines of said extension.
The function of this arrangement is as follows. During assembly and after the shaft end has been pushed back into place by the tubular shaft, the nut extension is rotated using the auxiliary shaft which is slightly released for this purpose, c That is to say brought to the position for which one series of splines is only in contact with a series of those of the threaded rod. This auxiliary shaft is thus used as a tubular wrench and the shaft end is tightened as much as desired by this means. When screwing is complete, the angular shaft is forced inward (ie towards the paddle wheel) and, in an intermediate position, it can rotate freely since all its splines are free.
We then find for it a position using the vernier effect mentioned above, for which it can be driven back exactly into place and for which the outer and inner splines of the auxiliary shaft are in position. contact, as regards the external splines, with complementary splines of the tubular shaft and those of the interior with the splines of the threaded rod.
Under these conditions, the auxiliary shaft is connected, by key, to the rotor assembly to allow driving while the threaded rod is positively wedged against any play.
Other constructive features will become apparent during the description of an embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings, the compressor housing or jacket 1 has air inlets 1A and 1B supported by lattice supports 2 which connect the housing 1 to a front structure 3 containing an auxiliary gearbox 4 and to a rear structure 5 which comprises the casing of a bearing for the turbine. A series of balls 17 supports the inner cage 18 open on a cylindrical part of the shaft end 11 and which are held axially as explained below. In the box 16 are formed ventilation holes (not shown) in the vicinity of the bearing of the turbine.

<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The threaded end 11B carries a nut of special shape and the circular end 26 of which is threaded and carries a peripheral rim 26A engaged mainly between the end of the tubular shaft 20 and the body of the wheel 23. End 26 terminates a tubular shaft 26B housed in an axial bore passing through the body of wheel 23, projecting slightly on the front face thereof where said shaft is centered by an annular plate 27. This projecting end carries a unique series of external splines 260. The shaft 26B is, in effect, an extension of the nut.
The head 26 is a nut which, when in place, biases the shafts 11 and 20 axially towards each other by compressing the washer 25 which exerts a predetermined force on the cage 18 and it constitutes, in final, the only retaining member between the shaft end 11 and the turbine 10.
The impeller can therefore be detached by removing the nut 26 which, through its rim 26A, can act as an extractor if necessary.
On the side of the front face of the wheel 23 is provided an output shaft 28, retained in a manner similar to that of the tubular shaft. This shaft 28 is hollow and it is supported externally by an articulated and thrust bearing 29 mounted on the front structure 3 of the machine. It is evident that the two bearings of the rotor assembly comprise suitable lubricating and sealing means which are not part of the invention.
In the bore of the output shaft 28 is engaged a tubular or "side" shaft 30 which constitutes an auxiliary drive shaft. The inner end of that -.:! carries two series of splines 30A and 30B, spaced axially, each of which is suitable for being engaged on the splined end 26C of the shaft extending the nut. Externally, the shaft 30 carries grooves 30C suitable for cooperating with the internal grooves of the output shaft 28.
The arrangement of the splines, and preferably the kind of verniers, so that precise and different locations can be obtained during engagement. The forward end of the shaft 30 extends from the shaft 28. and carries external splines to be able to be engaged in a part of the mechanism, such as an auxiliary gearbox, which one wants to drive and whose first pinion, of the reduction train, is designated by 31 .
To disassemble the assembly, the auxiliary shaft 30 is pulled forward to disengage the splines 300 and to move 30A away from 26C. while the grooves 30b engage between those designated by 26C. The shaft 30 is thus used as a key to rotate the shaft 268. After assembly, the shaft 30 is pushed back and the position is sought for which the splines 30A come to engage in the splines 26C and simultaneously in the splines. grooves 30C.
This new engagement for.e a positive locking for the auxiliary shaft 30 and, consequently, for the tubular shaft 26B and the nut 26. By then connecting the gearbox 4 to the machine, one prevents the shaft. 30 can advance so that accidental unlocking becomes impossible and therefore more serious accidents are avoided.
It can be seen that the turbine can be mounted on the machine without having disturbed other parts than the duct

and the gearbox 4. In addition, it is obvious that the whole of the turbine bearing can be removed at the same time as the turbine by sliding on the keys 14. An important consequence of this arrangement It is, if careful balancing and adjustment is made during manufacture, that the turbine or bearing can be completely replaced or inspected without disturbing the impeller. As the removal of this wheel requires the opening of the compressor housing, this advantage is therefore important.
Likewise, it is not necessary to remove or disturb any part of the control device, with its seals, etc. in order to remove or reassemble the turbine.
The fluted arrangement of the turbine bearing features, by itself. important functional advantages since it allows the effects of thermal expansion (lateral grooves with radial play are used) and qa'il pockets that no axial thrust is exerted on it. The shaft couplings, by splines, provided on the internal shafts and in the output shaft allow a torsional connection which does not require extreme precision for alignment, which facilitates its connection to a auxiliary gearbox.
It can be seen that the invention can be applied to arrangements for which the tubular shaft is not necessarily part of a turbine. For example, it may be that the rotor element 23 should be connected to a part of a shaft coupling which in turn is connected to a turbine and in this case it may be advisable to adopt the device proposed to make the coupling (which in this case constitutes the second rotor element) easily removable from the first rotor éler.ent.
