<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a request for
PATENT OF INVENTION René, Auguste HENRY Buffer for props, stops and similar uses.
The invention applies to the case where a part subjected to compression, such as a mine prop, is associated with a device capable of yielding in opposition a significant delaying work.
We know that building materials such as metals, natural or artificial stones, concrete or wood, have very high elasticity coefficients so that they only undergo a small deformation, before reaching their elasticity limits. and breaking. By themselves these materials are therefore incapable of significant retardation work.
It is known to provide parts likely to be subjected to compressive forces to which they should yield, with sand or peat boxes, gas or liquid brakes, hydraulic or mechanical jacks, parts to be stopped or crushing or devices acting by friction.
The addition of damping devices allows a retarding work function both of the load at which the damping occurs and of the distance traveled by the point of application of the latter.
The invention relates to a buffer providing cushioning
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in several phases defined by different ratios between load increases and deformations.
It achieves this goal by using certain physical properties of materials such as wood.
One is that the material first compresses elastically, as the pressure increases; then transforms, under constant pressure, into a plastic material, which in turn will deform in proportion to the pressure.
The others concern the rate of the lateral pressures of a body subjected to compression. While for gases and liquids the pressures are equal in all directions, that for loose materials, such as sand and gravel, the lateral pressures are still important, these; 1 are very low for bodies in the process of plasticization .
These properties are put to good use according to the invention, by opposing the lateral pressures which accompany the compression generating the plasticization, a resistance resulting from circles, tightening staves, between which progresses the compression piston, possibly formed by one end of prop.
These staves can be of various types, and in particular of the same substance as the material subjected to plasticization, for example wood. They can be carried out beforehand or automatically as described below.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the plug consists of a wooden log, pressed along its axis, in the direction of the fibers. This log covers the cylindrical end of a forestay of smaller diameter, but of a material more resistant to compression than the wood of the log, in which the forestay, under the influence of an axial load, punctures its path by crushing the wood fibers,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
while the walls split longitudinally, forming moats which are kept in place by circles and thus constituting, automatically, a barrel in which the fiber-plastic material, coming from the crushed bay,
understood by absorbing considerable work
Another feature of the invention consists in using circles closed by an assembly which can gradually give way under the effect of increasing tension.
It is also provided, according to a special feature of the invention, to constitute the circles of steel wire. In this case their closure may; according to a complementary part of the invention, be produced by simple cold folding of their ends
Other particular features of the invention will become apparent during the description of the accompanying drawings by way of non-limiting examples.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, with; break, of a plug comprising a log, engaged on the end of a column
Fig. 2 is a diagram
Fig.Z is a section along III-III of the relative fig.1. variant*
Fig. 4 shows a buffer with a log surrounded by prepared moats.
Figt5 shows a tampon comprising an elastic or plastic madtérlas hand held by a moat.
Fig. 6 shows a double-acting tampon - '
Fig, 7 illustrates an embodiment of the invention for forming a support frame.
In the case of figure l, the buffer has a log 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
crimped by circles such as 3. It is hollowed out so as to ooiffer the end of a part 4, constituted for example by a metal oolonne or a boton forming part of a prop.
The buffer is inserted between this delonne 4 and a support 5.
By way of example, the diagram in figure 2 indicates the results obtained in the following case:
The end of column 4 has a diameter of 12.5 cm. and is capped with a fir log (epicus) of 20 cm. in diameter, crimped by circles of wire 0.8 cm. of diameter 'The diagram in figure 2 gives the results obtained by compression, the ordinates relate to the axial pressures in kilos per square centimeter and the abscissas to the penetration strokes in centimeters of the piston or punch that constitutes the end of the colo, me 4.
The retarding work thus obtained reaches the enormous figure of five thousand kilogrammeters per liter of plasticized wood, a number which illustrates the extraordinary efficiency of the original stamp according to the invention.
As has been said above, a characteristic feature of the invention consists in using the remarkable property of wood highlighted by the diagram of FIG. 2 showing the law of deformations of the wood thus compressed. We first see the pressure increasing up to the elastic limit.
followed by the phenomenon of constant pressure during the work of transformation of the material, by passing from the solid and fibrous state to the plastic state, after which occurs the plastic compression of the material '
According to a complementary feature of the invention, the circles can be formed by steel wires, the ends of which are hooked by cold bending, this assembly.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
blockage which can be eroded by the effect of the increase in voltage
When setting up necessities so require, the pad can be constructed, as shown in figure 3, in two pieces 2a and 2b, which are assembled in a diametral plane AB, in the manner of pads and which are held in place. contact using circles 3.
In the case of fig.4, the material to be crushed is constituted by a piece of wood or log 56, surrounded by prepared staves such as 6a. crimped with circles 3.
In the case of fig.5, staves, such as 6a surround the end of column 4 and define a space containing the material 7 to. laminate.
Fig. 6 shows a double-acting buffer, that is to say receiving two columns such as 4 axially opposedJ. It goes without saying that the invention extends to the association of multiple elements designed as indicated below. above and having equal or different diameters, so that their interventions are simultaneous or successive '
Fig. 7 relates to a particularly interesting industrial application. to which the present invention also extends, and relating to the support of a mine gallery '
Two concrete uprights 8 and 9 each having at their foot a buffer according to the invention, respectively Sa and 9a, supporting a metal head 10, with:
interposition of other buffers according to the invention, respectively 8b and 9b.
In the case where these buffers have dimensions comparable to those given above, by way of example, and where. the thickness of the tampon beyond. the concrete upright is of the order of 20 cm. the retarding work of the four tampans, which will correspond to the compression of ten liters of wood, will reach
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
fifty thousand kilogrammetres.
The invention extends to the industrial product which constitutes a concrete column capped at its ends or to the Scins at one of them, a tarpon provided with tightening circles. This arrangement facilitates the handling of these columns and their solidity. ends by protecting them against disintegration of the concrete under the effect of pressure.
