Description

A

On a avantage à former l'épaulement

La fig. 1 est une vue,'en élévation de côté, d'une tige de forage dans laquelle est inséré'un outil tranchant;

La fig. 2 est une vue en élévation de face de la tige de forage suivant la fig. 1;

products which have to be washed away plays an important role. It is easier and more economical to wash out small and short chip fragments than to drive out relatively narrow holes for long and bulky chips. But the shape of the chips depends, among other factors, on the shape of the cutting tools used for drilling. When using the known cutting tools, the shape of the chips produced is very compact, at least when it comes to the machining of steel objects or other stubborn materials; therefore, the discharge of such chips from the holes faces difficulties.

According to the invention, these drawbacks are avoided by using a cutting tool whose cutting edge is divided by a shoulder extending in the direction of the drilling axis. It is advantageous to form the shoulder

by hollowing out, from below, the cutting edge and constructing the cutting edge as a ridge, the two cutting edges which generate the ridge shape of the cutting edge being thereby offset with respect to each other, in the direction of the drilling axis, because of the shoulder formed by recess. In addition, it is advantageous to give the two cutting edges a different length, so that the shoulder formed by the recess is not located on the center line of the cutting tool, but is offset to one side. The cutting tool, of which the cutting part is advantageously constituted by hard metal, can be fixed to the drill rod by means of a removable assembly, for example by a screw connection.

The accompanying drawing shows a cutting tool constructed according to the invention. On this drawing :

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a drill rod with a cutting tool inserted therein;

Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the drill rod according to FIG. 1;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along line III-III of FIG. 2, and

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cutting tool along the line IV-IV of fig.l.

1-denoted by a drill rod to which the cutting tool 2 is securely connected by means of a removable assembly 3. A pipe 4, formed inside the drill rod 1, brings the oil under pressure, towards the point where drilling takes place. We denote by 5 and 6 guides embedded in the drilling rod 1. The cutting tool

shoulder 11 formed by recess. We have designated by 12 and
13 grooves of different conformation depending on the chosen chip thickness and depending on the properties of the material to be machined by chip removal.

By carrying out the boreholes with sharp tools having the shape described, chips are produced in small and short fragments which can be driven out of the borehole in a simple way, by means of oil at a relatively low pressure, therefore, the pump pressures can be reduced, and furthermore, the drilling powers of the tools can be significantly increased.
