<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The main aim of invention is .'6v; tor le? disadvantages of the previous methods and ua to provide a method of manufacturing glass tubes and mti0r = 2 30 comprising in a similar manner, which is simple and economical while allowing to achieve, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
all lengths, especially snorkels of constant diameter and very regular thickness, in a limited space.
The process of the invention consists, in its generality, in constituting a tube, in glass or a material behaving in a similar manner, by conforming on a mandrel, or in a die, at least one strip or other solid body of appropriate profile,
According to one of the preferred embodiments of the process of the invention, it is wound helically on a mandrel, preferably rotating, of suitable dimensions and conformation, in particular of circular section, made of a suitable material, which can be a metal, but also any other material, such as for example that of which one proposes to force the tubes or to associate with that of the tubes, that is to say one or more bands,
either one or more solid bodies having any other profile, or in combination of bands and bodies of other profiles, in particular by ensuring at the same time the union of the contiguous edges in the winding helix.
The starting strip (s), or other profiles, can be formed beforehand by casting and rolling from a bath of molten material, and wound on the mandrel in the hot state, or else these strips or other profiles can be obtained. by cutting sheets, or other bodies and suitably heated for their winding.
Instead of starting from strips or other profiles already definitively shaped at the time of winding, it is possible, according to the invention, to start from different profiles and impart to the wound material the desired conformation during winding.
In the same vein, we can, whatever the starting point, modify, simultaneously with the winding, already established profiles, for example = Day to communicate any practical or decorative character to them. furthermore, the winding on the mandrel can be carried out in one or more layers, successively or simultaneously, for example for the purpose of producing duplex, triplex, etc. safety tubes.
or for other purposes,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to another embodiment of the invention, a strip or its equivalent, where appropriate after prior shaping, in particular of its edges, is brought to the cylindrical shape by transverse winding, in particular obtained by passing through dies. - res, while on the other hand, where appropriate, the union of the contiguous edges is ensured.
In all embodiments, the union, possibly inti me, of the elements of the tubes, in particular of the contiguous edges of the winding helix (s), or of the cylinder, can be obtained either by autogenous welding, with or without input. material, or in any other way, such as by interposition of suitable adhesives *
Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the more detailed description which follows of certain simple embodiments, in the application of the invention to the manufacture of glass tubes and with the aid of the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, and in a schematic way, certain preferred devices - and on which:
Fig.l is an elevational view, partially in section, of an apparatus for the manufacture of tubas by winding a strip
Fig.2 shows, in plan, the detail of the strip mill;
Fig.3 is a detail of a variant;
Fig.4 is a partial view of a winding device according to fig.l for carrying out the method starting from a solid body;
Fig. 5 shows the stages of a production by transverse winding of uno bander
Fig.6 is an elevational view, partly in couna, of an apparatus for the manufacture of Fig.5.
.a referring to Figures 1 and 2, 1 shows schematically the basin of a melting furnace or a heated crucible, the heating means, and the details of which have not been shown, it being understood that one could use any known device. This basin or bowl is equipped in its bottom with a calibrated outlet opening or die 2, which can be conditioned to be interchangeable, in order to be able to modify the profile or the section, or both of the glass net 3 which s 'from it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
At the outlet of the opening or die 2, there are preferably means suitable for thermally acting on the glass net, such as for example burners 4, or, and air blowing nozzles 5, to adjust the temperature and, or viscosity.
Below the outlet opening or die 2, there is a pair of cylinders 6 intended to shape the glass net 3, to give it the shape of a strip 7, the edges 0 of which are preferably bevelled like clearly visible in fig. 2.
To this end, the cylinders each comprise a terminal bead 6a shaped in a corresponding manner, said cylinders being driven, one by the other by means of a pair of gears 6b and by a transmission. any suitable motor such as motor 6c.
The glass thread 3 can be simply shaped by the cylinders G, or else these cylinders can exert on the thread an accelerating action causing a certain stretching of the opening or die -CI, or even a retarding action, depending on the needs, To then transform the strip 7 into a tube of the desired diameter, on the path of the strip 7 and preferably below the rolls 6, a rotating mandrel 9 is placed, on which the strip 7 is wound in a helix, the the winding preferably being made so that the side bevels 9 overlap each other.
The mandrel 9 can receive an axial advance corresponding to the pitch of the winding helix, but it is preferably arranged by giving it an axially fixed position, but of adjustable inclination, so as to be able to adapt the latter to the. diameter of the mandrel and therefore of the tube to be made. To this end, the mandrel is mounted on a tilting frame, such as 10, articulated in 1-IL and adjustable in inclination using the jack 12, this frame advantageously serving as a support for the motor 13, in particular at variable speed, ensuring the rotational drive of the mandrel 9.
This rotation is communicated to said mandrel by an appropriate transmission, such as that by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
gears 14, which preferably will further include a clutch (not shown),
The mandrel 9 is established so as to be able to adjust its conditions. thermal, and normally it is given a hollow shape, the internal hollow 15 being extended to the ends so as to again make it pass through the stream of a heating or cooling fluid, such as a stream of air.
A current of air of this kind, which can be blown or sucked, makes it possible to keep the mandrel at a low temperature, and at the same time to sufficiently cool the formed glass tube, at its outlet from the mandrel, to prevent its deformation. bn association with the mandrel 9, there is also provided a pressure roller 16, the rotation of which can be controlled, but which is preferably free, and for example mounted on a cradle 17 with the interposition of rolling members such as balls or rollers 18.
This roller 16 is intended in principle to equalize the thickness of the glass tube formed and also to ensure the perfect union of the bevels 3 overlapping each other.
Finally, on the path of the strip 7, and immediately preceding the winding point, heating means are provided, such as a series of burners such as 19, intended to bring the covering rod 3 to the end. suitable temperature for its welding with the bevel 8 that it is going to cover. Where appropriate, the latter bevel can itself be warmed to a greater or lesser extent, in particular by virtue of burners such as 19a for example.
In operation, the glass which flows through the opening or die, for example scus in the form of a thread of circular section, is transformed into a bevelled strip by the cylinders 6, heated to the right of one or both bevels 3 by the burners 19 and 19a, and finally shaped as a tube, with simultaneous welding of the bevels, by winding on the mandrel 9 with the concour @ of the pressure roller 15. On leaving the mandrel, the tube can be cut into lengths desired by known means.
Instead of shaping strip 7 with parallel bevels 3,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
we can give these bevels opposite layers, while the winding had! ' The mandrel 9 is carried out with these bevels simply joined, as illustrated in FIG. 3, the welding then being obtained by a supply of molten glass in the groove formed by the bevels.
This not only makes it possible to make smooth tubes, but also to / produce threaded tubas or / impart to the tubes certain decorative effects, in particular by suitably adjusting the quantity of the filler glass, or by giving this. last a different coloring. In order to obtain decorative effects, it would also be possible to give the helix a more or less elongated pitch from a minimum corresponding to the width of the strip. In the same vein, the strip 7 can receive certain decorative or other patterns by the action of the cylinders 6 or of the cylinder 16.
In particular, using this cylinder, suitably profiled for this purpose, we can provide the tube formed with a thread, also making threaded tubes in this way, again we could constitute the tubes with the help of bands or analogues having different colorations and surface profiles, or use as a mandrel a glass tuba or axially movable analog, on which one comes, form another or more other tubas in any combination of pitches, profiles and coloring.
In the foregoing, it has been assumed that the jaw reunion of the strip 7 takes place by autogenous welding. It comes within the scope of the invention to assemble the parts to be joined together by other means, such as in particular using appropriate adhesives, sprayed onto the corresponding bevels or edges using spray devices. or others replacing all or part of the burners 19 and 19a in FIG. 1, the possible application of these variant embodiments depending on the uses for which the manufactured tubes are intended.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the glass net 3 which flows from the opening or die 2 is not transformed into a strip 7 prior to winding, but whether or not simultaneously conforms to this last.
As shown schematically in fig. 4, the net
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of circular or other cross-section, flows over the rotating mandrel 9, if necessary after having been heated or cooled on its path by suitable heating or cooling devices, such as the burners 4 or the air blowing nozzles 5.
The net 3 is thus brought to a temperature suitable for its winding as it is, or else for winding it up with this net together with its crushing, its shaping or its conditioning.
This crushing, shaping or conditioning is obtained by cooperation of a pressure cylinder such as 16, which can be given any desired profile for the production of a tube, either smooth, or worked, decorated, provided with a net. , etc. as indicated with reference to figs. 1 to 3.
For example, to establish a smooth tube, it is preferable to include at the pressure cylinder 16 a bead 20 capable of forming a bevel on one of the edges of the strip, the other edge being shaped automatically by cooperation of the mandrel 9, of the cylinder
16 and the edge already formed. By these combined actions, and while the glass which forms the said edge is at a suitable temperature, the welding of the contiguous edges is obtained automatically by providing a continuous tube of uniform diameter and thickness.
As in the examples of execution according to Figures 1 to 3, it goes without saying that one could wind, crush, shape or condition, not one, but more than 5 threads, and that 1 'not only union of the contiguous edges can be cleared / by autogenous welding, -but also by addition of material, use of suitable adhesives, or the equivalent.
In the embodiment according to Figures 5 and 6, after having formed, by any means, for example by conformation in the manner described with reference to fig.l, a strip such as 7, this strip is wound transversely in passing it through one or more shaping dies, so as to communicate to it successively the profiles A, B, C, D or the like, the contiguous edges of the profile D being joined either by autogenous welding or by welding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
re with filler material, or using any suitable adhesive, said edges may be normal, bevelled, double-sided, etc.
Fig. 6 then illustrates an apparatus comprising a die 21
EMI8.1
passing the band 7 through the profiles, r3,;,:, with means, including burners 22, to bring the edges to reunite at the temperature suitable for welding.
Advantageously, the apparatus is made to include a mandrel 23, preferably hollow, through which a current of

fluid intended to act thermiqusmont '3tlï "the tube, and for example a current of cold air, brought by a ter quo nozzle 2i.
Advantageously, the outlet end of the die 31 is given a slightly conical conformation, in order to facilitate the release, a slightly cDilical conformation in order to '3 The ac-'Llî-Û-, r J-1'lgayoment of the tube. form.

Instead of a mechanical drive, one could use 1 air blown through the mandrel to ensure the advancement of the tube formed, the end of the latter then being closed, in particular by crushing and autogenous welding.
After their manufacture by any of the methods

described, the tubes will, if necessary, be subjected to a dr racuiSson operation in the usual way.
