<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

pattielle suivant la ligne II-II;
La fig. 3 est une vue latérale d'une malle avec un dispositif de retenue du couvercle un peu différent;

"Retaining support for folding or sliding parts
For folding tables, boot or boot lids, sliding windows, auto-movable hoods and the like, locks are commonly used which can be operated in one direction or the other with a hand while the other hand holds the folding or sliding object. The subject of the invention is automatic locking and unlocking, making the second hand free.
To this end, the novelty lies in that, between the two parts which must rest against each other, two members are interposed, namely a tenon connected to one of the two parts and a guide slot for this tenon connected to the other part, the arrangement being such that the guide groove forms for the tenon a closed trajectory returning on itself, with a branch point or switching point which, during a simple displacement in back and forth of the tenon, @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
forces the latter in the manner of a needle, to follow a circular path in the guide groove, this tenon meeting at any point of its path a stopper forming a support position.
This arrangement is such that, for example, by lifting a hinged cover to a certain height, the tenon which slides along a supply branch of the guide groove, falls into the stopper and locks the cover. against a folding back, If the cover is then still lifted slightly, the pin slides in the closed guide, and as a result of the needle-shaped branch, cannot fall back into the stopper and the cover falls back.
The whole operation is thus done with one hand and only by lifting, as simple as possible, the cover or the object to be kept raised.
It is particularly advantageous to form the needle-shaped branch by means of an oblique surface rising, in the guide groove, in the axial direction of the post, with elastic pressure of the post against the oblique surface or vice versa. . In this way we arrive in a very simple way so that the post can climb the inclined surface but cannot go back on the step or degree that it constitutes; he must therefore complete his circuit in the guide slope always in the same direction, in order, from the support position, by a slight lifting followed by a release, not to fall back into the stopper, but in the inlet branch of the groove, which allows the complete folding of the cover.
Various embodiments of the invention are shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figs. 1 and 2 show a side view of a folding table provided with the new device and a section
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
pattielle along line II-II;
Fig. 3 is a side view of a trunk with a slightly different lid retainer;
And fig. 4 is a view of a guide plate for another variant of the retaining device.
Figures 1 and 2 show a folding table 1 which can pivot around an articulation fixed along a wall 3. It carries on its underside a support arm 5, which can pivot around an articulation 4 and ending by a fixing pin 6; spiral spring 7 presses on this arm in the direction towards the wall. On this wall 3 is fixed a grooved plate 8. This comprises a guide slot 9 forming a groove with a bottom, and at the upper part of the latter a closed grooved guide with a going branch 10 and a branch. return 11. In the outgoing branch 10 is provided a stopper 12 intended to receive the tenon 6 in the raised support position.
The two branches 10 and 11 are separated from each other by a sort of branch or switch 13 in which a step or step is made, the return branch 11 having a bottom which rises obliquely. and the lowest part of which is far below degree 13 which is in the same plane as the rest of the bottom.
The operation is as follows: the shelf folded down is lifted, the tenon 6, near the upper part of the stroke, engages in the notch 12 and keeps the shelf raised when released. this one. If the latter is raised a little more, the tenon 6, as a result of the transverse elasticity of the arm 5 or of the grooved sheet 8, escapes from degree 13 and falls back on the inclined branch of return; when you let go of the tablet, it cannot go back to notch 12, but goes to
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the arrow.
The shapes of the guide slope can be infinitely modified according to the needs to which the device must adapt: only the route and the branching are essential. The latter, moreover, could be constituted by a flexible tongue in the plane of the slot, which prevents the backward movement of the post, but this device is more difficult to achieve than the oblique surface rising above the slot.
If it is necessary that the cover can be held in place in various more or less fully open positions, the outgoing arm 10 must be extended and provided with several notches; naturally the return arm 11 must also be extended at the expense of the lead branch 9. The cover can thus be maintained at any desired height and, by a slight lifting beyond the highest support position, then be completely folded back.
The entire device can be made of metal or, more preferably, of artificial resin or other material. re plastic, the springs only then being made of metal.
In the embodiments of FIGS. 3 and 4, it is possible to have in the extension of the grooves 9, 10 of the stops 17 which are intended to prevent that, during a slightly too sudden raising, the tenon does not reach directly into the return branch 11, this which would bring about an immediate folding of the cover.
