3 rue Volta, Puteaux, Seine, France.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

INVENTION PATENT "Improvements to airplanes" Société Anonyme de Constructions Aéronautiques,
3 rue Volta, Puteaux, Seine, France.
, 'The present invention relates to the construction of airplanes, and relates to a new manufacturing process as well as any airplane produced according to this process.
The evolution of current aeronautical technology is characterized on the one hand by the reduction in the bearing surfaces and the reduction in the master torque of the fuselages, that is to say by a reduction in passive aerodynamic resistances, on the other starts by increasing the motive power which must overcome the previous resistances.
The result of these trends is that the quantity of fuel to carry increases while the volume offered on the aircraft for its accommodation decreases: the solutions usually employed and which offered barely sufficient volumes are no longer acceptable under the new conditions which have just come about. be exposed.
The old solutions consisted in placing in the voids left between the parts of a frame constituting the frame of the aircraft one or more tanks which contained the fuel. These tanks were housed, either
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the fuselage, or in the wings; there was always a loss of usable space because the walls of the tanks could not exactly match the shapes of the frame. It was indeed necessary to provide for a dismantling of the tanks, and the necessities of the manufacture of the tanks were opposed to the tormented forms of the walls which could not thus follow the possible forms offered by the vid.es of the frame.
An intermediate solution was also studied and produced: it is that of the wing spar forming the tank, but this solution does not make it possible to occupy all the possible volume of the frame, because it is necessary to create a secondary frame fixed to the spar. Mainly, this front frame supports the outer skin of the wing and gives it the desired shape. We therefore still have here a wing covering around the tank spar and an unusable volume.
A second intermediate solution, the reverse of the previous one, was also carried out. It consisted in creating a wing with a single spar supporting the bending forces, the torsional forces being supported by tanks attached to the spar. In this system also the total available volume of the wing was not used, because the spar supporting the bending forces had to be placed at the place where the wing profile offered the maximum height; consequently the tanks had only lower heights, and their volume hardly reached the third or half of the external volume of the wing.
On the other hand, the reduction of the bearing surfaces, the refinement of the wings, the reduction in the section of the fuselages leads to adopting both for the wings and for the empennages, fuselages, etc., the so-called coating construction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
hard working that gives the maximum strength for the minimum weight. However, with working coatings, the housing of the tanks becomes even more complicated, and if we have succeeded in accommodating them, it becomes extremely difficult to disassemble them, because to remove them it is necessary to make holes in the coating, which reduces the rigidity of the structure of the aircraft and brings complications in the design and construction of the construction.
The present invention consists of a construction system which reconciles the two tendencies exposed, that is to say which leaves the working coating of the framework continuous and which gives for the fuel the total volume included within the working coating; to obtain this result, an airplane produced according to the invention consists of:
1.- a tank constituting the central part of the wing. This tank box is made like a working coating wing, obviously taking the necessary precautions to make it watertight.
2.- one right wing end and one left wing end mounted on the tank box.
3.- a fuselage carried by the tank box.
In the present invention, the tank box therefore constitutes the central and main part of the aircraft. Around it and on it have just fixed the fuselage, the engine unit (s) and the wings.
It receives in addition to its own lift since the tank box is a wing portion) the lift of the wing tips and it transfers all of the lift to the components that must be carried by the fuselage and engines). The tank box must therefore withstand all
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the bending and torsional forces which were previously supported by the side member (s), or by the coating.
The volume offered for the fuel is very maximum since it is equal to the external volume of the airfoil minus the actual volume of the metal elements constituting the box. It should be noted that if the coating is to be stiffened by pieces of closed section, it is sufficient to drill a few small holes in them so that the internal volume of these stiffeners is used to contain fuel.
If the aircraft is dual or multi-engine, the tank box will additionally support the engine spindles.
It is advantageous to limit the waterproof box in the direction of the depth of the wing to the central zone, because the volume of the rear part is very small and that of the front part is useful for housing the cable rods intended to actuate the control surfaces or parts to be operated.
In addition, the space in the rear section must almost always accommodate the high lift devices? found on all modern airplanes. Likewise in the front part we will house the auxiliary wings, called split wings.
However, in some cases it may be advantageous to use the total space.
The fuel tank can of course be placed both above and below the fuselage. Likewise the fuse can be crossed by the reservoir.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown by way of example, in a diagrammatic manner, some embodiments according to the invention.
On these drawings

aircraft according to the invention, the fuselage being mounted below the tank box. fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section and FIG. 3 is a side view of the same aircraft.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 show emblabl es views of a twin-engine airplane according to the invention.
Figs. 7 and 8 show, in vertical section, two embodiments of the tank box.
Lafig. 9 shows an airplane, in which the fuselage is fixed above the fuel tank.
Fig. 10 shows an airplane, in which the fuselage is crossed by the tank chamber, and FIG. 11 shows assembly details.
Referring to the drawings: t
We see in Figures 1, 2 and 3, a the tank box, forming a beam and constituting the main part of the aircraft according to the invention. In b, b we see the two wing tips and in c the fuselage, mounted, in this example, below part a. The airplane represented in these figures is a single-engine airplane.
In Figures 4,5 and 6 we see a twin-engine aircraft. The fuel tank a supports, in addition to the wing tips b, h and the fuselage c, the two engine spindles d.
Referring to fig. 7 shows an embodiment of the reservoir box. In this example, the part of the box forming the reservoir is practically limited to the central zone B-C. Zone C-D is reserved for housing high-lift devices and zone A-B for slotted wings.
On the other hand, in FIG. 8, the total space of the tank box is used to receive the fuel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In Figures 7 and 8 we see in ± the spacers and in ± the reinforcing angles.
In general, the walls of the tank-box are defined as follows: upper and lower walls coincident with the clean surface of the wing; that is to say, the upper wall directly constitutes the upper surface and the lower wall directly constitutes the lower surface. The end walls formed by cross sections of the wing 3 'see figs.7 and' 8). It goes without saying that the desired part or the whole of the box forming a reservoir to receive the fuel will be sealed.
In FIGS. 9 and 10, two embodiments can be seen showing respectively an airplane with a low wing, in which the fuselage is fixed above the tank box a and an airplane in which the fuselage is crossed by the tank box a.
It has been shown, moreover, in FIG. 10, that part of the wing tips can also form a reservoir and include a sealed area.
On certain small airplanes or on others on which it is desired, to simplify the construction, to build the wing in one piece, the central portion will be produced in a sealed manner and the usual construction of the wing will continue. on either side of the tank box.
In the case of airplanes having to have a very large radius of action, it is possible to extend the tank box construction over the entire span of the wing, either that this is in one piece as it comes. to be said, either
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
that the construction is divided as shown in figure 10:
An exemplary embodiment is shown in FIG. 11 which is a detailed enlargement of the assemblies of FIGS.
9 and 10.
On the tank box (a) is fixed, by riveting or welding, a T profile t), the fuselage c is reinforced by a Z profile and the, all assembled by bolts r.
For the assembly of the box ¯% and the wing tip b. the box a is bordered at its end by an angle a riveted or welded directly to its working walls; the wing tip h also carries an angle u. ; the connection of the two angles by means of the bolts assembles b on a.
It must be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and shown, which are intended only to better understand the spirit of the invention and which only show schematically a certain number of variants. of achievement. The invention relates in all its generality to a new method of constructing an airplane consisting in fixing to a central part forming the main beam and, at the same time, a sealed tank, on the one hand the fuselage and on the other hand, the ends wings * It also relates to, and this as a new industrial product, a tank-box girder forming the central part of an airplane.
Finally, and this also as a new industrial product, it is aimed at any aircraft produced according to the aforementioned process and comprising a central part forming a tank box while playing the role of a beam, this central part being able to extend towards the ends of the wings over any desired length:
