<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

method and device for improving the texture of steel products.
A large number of proposals have already been made to improve the texture of steel products at places under heavy stress.
All of these proposals tend to give the crystals an alignment bringing them into a position favorable and not detrimental to the product, which, as a rule, is where they are arranged as much as possible parallel to the upper surface, by applying high pressures. on the upper surface when shaping the steel product, either by rolling, forging, pressing etc. or also by drawing (as for example for bars or threads).
These proposals have been applied to both raw ingots and rolled sections, for example section irons, railway rails or other sections, whereby
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in part only places that are heavily stressed, in part also all around the profile, have their primary texture greatly improved. However, the dimensions of the installations must always be taken into account, which, owing to the necessity of shaping, restricts the action exerted to achieve the desired goal, in particular when it comes to large profiles, for example long ones. beams.
The invention relates to a method and to a device which overcomes this drawback.
It consists in that the crystals, already before the start of solidification of the steel and until the end of this operation, are moved in a desired direction and for example brought parallel to the longitudinal direction of the ingot, For this purpose, the steel is subjected to the action of intense magnetic fields in order to orient the crystals in statu nascendi in the desired direction and at the same time to bring about a consolidation of the different zones in the ingot thanks to which, just as in the drawing, the tensile strength of the steel is increased.
Tests have shown that, thanks to the action of magnetic fields, a significant modification of the primary texture and an increase in resistance is obtained.
Figures 1-4 show cross sections and rip sections through untreated bar steel and another treated by the new process.
While in an untreated steel (figures 1 and 2), we see that, in the representation of the cross section, the crystals are mainly oriented radially and that in the representation of the longitudinal section, they are mostly aligned from the inside. towards the outside, the crystals of the steel treated according to the invention do not follow any predominant direction in the cross section. In the longitudinal section, on the other hand, the desired alignment of the crystals in the longitudinal direction of

the steel is very clearly and very distinctly visible (fig. 3 and 4),
Figures 5 to 10 show in opposition the untreated bar steel (fig. 5 to 8) and the treated steel.
It is visible that the grain size is strongly influenced, that is to say is increased by the treatment (fig. 9 and 10). According to experiments carried out on sheets for electrical apparatus, the material therefore has a high electrical conductivity and is especially suitable for contact rails and the like.
The possible simultaneous action, controlled at will, of external magnetic fields circulating around the ingot and of circular fields can still rotate the aligned crystals in the longitudinal direction and thereby improve the primary texture both in the longitudinal direction and in the longitudinal direction. the transverse direction.
A device for implementing the method is shown schematically, by way of example, in Figures 11 and 12. a is the liquid metal poured into the mold k. m designates electromagnets and d is a solenoid whose iron core is formed by the mold with its contents.
The electromagnets n arranged horizontally in fig.
12 revolve around the mold, while the vertical electromagnets m are permanently fixed.
Instead of using electromagnets, it is also possible to act on the metal in the mold by making electric currents circulate therein, in which the variation in color caused by heat plays a decisive role in the alignment of the crystals.
A corresponding arrangement is shown schematically in Fig. 13. The current leaves the lower plate p and enters the metal a. The mold is insulated by a refractory material f, The current leaves the upper end of the mold. It is better to use direct current, In this

At the same time, there is an alignment of the crystals in the longitudinal direction of the ingot. However, it is also possible to obtain a result with alternating current.
