1. Dans des moulesà pression, par une opération de pressa- ge ; mais ce procédé présente l'inconvénient que le verre devient trouble, qu'il n'est pas sonore et qu'il est très fragile;
2. Par le soufflage dans un moule, à l'extrémité d'une canne de souffleur ou à la machine ; mais en raison de l'épaisseur uni- forme des parois de l'ébauche en verre, les facettes apparaissent également d'une façon indésirable du côté intérieur du récipient de verre obtenu après l'opération de soufflage;
3.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 9 montre le récipient complètement souffié, à l'intérieur
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Method and devices for the manufacture of hollow glass objects,
The invention relates to the manufacture of hollow glass objects and in particular hollow objects round or elongated or oval on the inside, having angles on the outside.
Glass containers having angles or corners on the outside could heretofore be made in the glass art in various ways.
1. In pressure molds, by a pressing operation; but this process has the drawback that the glass becomes cloudy, that it is not sound and that it is very fragile;
2. By blowing in a mold, at the end of a blower rod or at the machine; but due to the uniform thickness of the walls of the glass blank, the facets also appear undesirably on the interior side of the glass container obtained after the blowing operation;
3.
By making by blowing a normal, round or oval glass container, the facets then being cut, roughly first by means of iron grindstones, water and sand or corundum or carborundum grindstones, then finely by means of fine and finally polished emery wheels; but this process, which gives
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
excellent products, is long and expensive; 4. In machines such as those mentioned under 2, in which the glass blank, instead of being produced by the rod of a blower, is produced in smaller dimensions in a punch pressing mold, and then is blown to achieve the final shape, but this process also gives angles to the interior surface.
In order to avoid the aforementioned drawbacks, in accordance with the invention, the glass blank is produced in the form referred to in 4, with concave external facets (see Fig. 1 of the appended drawing), that is to say - say in a pressure mold with convex interior facets (Fig. 2). Fig. 3 represents the punch corresponding to the circular mold shown in FIG. 2, punch which would for example be oval for a faceted oval container.
Fig 4 shows the blank in longitudinal section and Fig.5 shows it in elevation.
The final blow mold has the shape shown in FIG. 6, so that in contact with the wall of the blow mold, the concave facets flatten out under the internal air pressure and that on the blow molding a container is produced, the interior of which is round (or elongated) and which has angles on the outside.
The blowing operation and the distribution of the mass of glass are also represented by FIGS. 7 to 9 in their various phases.
Fig. 7 shows before the blowing, the blank introduced into the final blow mold.
Fig. 8 shows during the blowing operation, As the medium M (Fig. 7) of the facet has the smallest wall thickness of the blank, the latter is there most strongly influenced by the blank. blowing, so that, during this operation, the concave facet already becomes almost flat.
Fig. 9 shows the container completely blown, inside
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the blow mold; when the sections are correctly calculated, the mass is distributed, so that the interior is of an impeccably round (or oval, etc.) shape.
As clearly shown in Fig. 8, the material of the blank stretches most strongly, during the blowing, along the thinnest center line, This can result during the blowing, crushing which is noticeable both on the inner face and 'on the outside of the finished glass. These imperfections can be removed by lightly grinding the outer surface.
In order to avoid them on the interior surface, the mold is made to rotate more or less rapidly during the blowing), the angular speed being regulated according to the temperature at which the glass and / or the mold are maintained. Fig. 9a shows in plan section a blank obtained by pressing with a round punch having flats facing the middle of the facets of the mold, which in this case are plane, but which could also be convex so as to obtain a blank with, concave facets.
The extra thickness thus obtained at the middle part of the facets prevents too rapid expansion of the blank at the location of the excess thicknesses during the subsequent blowing which gives a round interior * The blank thus obtained comprises according to the invention, parts of different thickness around its perimeter, but the glass thus obtained is not as clear as if it had not been touched by a punch.
The shape of FIG. 9a is still included within the scope of the present invention although generally this will be waived. ; to this embodiment because in order to obtain a truly clear and cloudless internal shape, one should as far as possible avoid contacting the mass of glass with a punch.
A blank can be produced in various ways free from the cloudiness caused by contact with a punch. this is how we can suck the mass of glass inside

laughter of the mold from the bottom. in Fig. 14, a longitudinal section of the blanking mold 1 containing the blank 6, which is shown in plan from below in FIG. 16 and which is fixed by its edge to the underside of the cover 3 of the mold in a manner described below. During the blowing, this cover is lowered over the blowing mold 2 (Fig. 15) provided with the die which is shown in plan from below by Fig, 17, so that the blank takes on the form on blowing. shown in phantom in Figs, 15 and 17.
In order that the facets of the blank correspond exactly to those of the finishing mold, the latter has been provided with wedge-shaped extensions 21 and a part 32 connected to the cover or upper mold 3 of the part 32 has been provided with ramps 22. mold. As soon as it is lowered onto the blow mold, the oblique surfaces 22 slide along the corners 21, whereby the cover is rotated to the determined position. This rotational movement is measured so that the facet of the blank of the glass container is blown exactly on one facet of the blow mold.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the blank can be produced by the rotation method known per se, that is to say by centrifugal molding. In the implementation of this process, the mass of glass introduced into the roughing mold rises more rapidly on the wall of the mold when the latter rotates rapidly.
In accordance with the present invention, a preform thus produced which is particularly haze-free is subsequently blown.
This process is shown in the accompanying drawings by some exemplary embodiments.
In this drawing, FIG. 11 shows in elevation, with partial vertical section, the roughing mold and its cover or mold.

Figs. 21 to 24 represent particular embodiments.!
With reference to Fige. 11, 12 and 13 which relate to the manufacture of ordinary glasses, the machine is made up of three main parts: the roughing mold 1, the blow mold 2 and the mold above the cover 3.
On the wall 4 of a roughing mold 1 mounted so as to be able to turn in a suitable machine frame, the mass of glass rises under the action of centrifugal force when the roughing mold is driven by a sufficiently rapid rotation of possibly variable speed. The interior surface of the roughing mold ends in a broad, approximately horizontal rim 5, above which the mass of glass pours, as the roughing mold rotates, to extend to the exterior surface 7. of this mold. The upper part or cover of the mold participates in the rotation of the roughing mold.
The roughing mold has a conical friction surface 10, in which the complementary surface 20 of the upper part or cover of the mold (Figs. 11 and 12) fits when the tube is lowered. 8. This one. @ rotates on a suitable mechanism frame on which it can mount
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
ter and descend. The upper part or cover 3 of the mold is also connected to the tube 8 so as to be able to go up and down, a lug 28 and a longitudinal groove 29 (Fig. 13) preventing it from rotating relative to the tube 8. Springs 11 press the cover 3 towards its lower position, that is to say until the flanges 33 and 34 abut (Fig. 12).
When the pipe 8 moves downwards, the springs are under tension as soon as the discs 10 and 20 mate smoothly, after which the cover 3 participates in the rotation imparted to the roughing mold. under the control of a motor. It participates in it until the glass has taken the form 6 shown in Figs. 11 and 12, then the upper part or cover is raised again from the roughing mold. The pipe 8 can be provided with a pallet 12, which turns more or less rapidly inside the glass blank in the opposite direction to that of the blank mold 1, in order to promote regular blowing of the glass. .
The pallet is mounted in a slot milled at the orifice of a tube 9 which rotates in the tube 8. Through the interior of the tube 9 pressurized air can penetrate through the annular space which this tube forms with. the pipe 8 and gas can enter the interior of the glass body both during the molding of the blank and during the blowing. The gas is distributed evenly through a notch 15 narrowing downwards. It is lit momentarily when large objects are to be made which cannot be kept hot long enough. In this case, the pallet 12 is pressed into the cover 3, after this cover has been applied to the roughing mold, only to the point where the combustion gases can escape through the intervals 27 (see Fig. 14).
As a result of this organization, glasses of any desired size can be blank in the liquid state according to FIG. 11. The temperature of the glass and / or that of the mold can also be maintained or brought to the desired degree by blowing using
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
air was heated to a high temperature before it was introduced into the mold. In order to then solidify this white-heated mass, pressurized cooling air is fed through pipe 9 into the glasses after the glass blank has been heated and formed. The pressurized air escapes through the openings 27, after cooling has taken place.
Instead of this arrangement for the heating of the upper part of the mold, the heating, for example electric, can be applied to the blanking mold or the blow mold. This upper part of the mold can be provided with cooling coils. This organization also constitutes an important point of the invention which is taken into account for the manufacture of vials. The blank produced in the manner described is blown as follows:
As soon as the upper part or cover of the mold descends with the glass blank 6 on the blow mold, the edge of this part is placed on the upper end of the blow mold (Fig. 12).
The folded edge 19 of the glass mass of the glass blank is then pressed between the shoulder 36 of the finishing mold and the ring 16 of the flange of the lid 3 of the mold. During the entire blowing, this edge remains tight so that pressurized air cannot escape through the grooves.
Under these conditions, the edge 18 of the glass blank is folded back so that it penetrates the wall of the receptacle and expands during blowing (Fig. 13). After the blowing operation is finished, in the case of the manufacture of cups, the plate-shaped part 18 of the wall is blown at 17, and it follows that the glass container made of The cup-shaped shape also has the properties of glass obtained exclusively by blowing at the edge and therefore lends itself to cutting and polishing better than pressed glass. The cup is finished by melting the edge in a way not included in the present invention and the detached part is moved away from the upper part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
or mold cover, by a push device, and remelt.
In the glass container shown in FIG. 15, the fixing of this container in the upper part or lid of the mold causes greater difficulties, since the fixing groove 36 used in Figs. 12 and 13, cannot be blow molded, because the diameter 38 of the top of this blow mold is substantially greater than the diameter 16 of the top or cover of the mold. This embodiment of the invention presents with regard to that represented by FIG. 13, on which the two diameters are approximately equal, the advantage that the waste glass, which ultimately has to be blown up and which is lost in manufacturing, is much less. This results in a manufacture which is substantially less expensive than that according to the methods known hitherto.
To produce curved glasses it is necessary to be able to open the blowing mold (Figs. 15, 18 to 20). The springs 23 working in compression continuously tend to pull the mold halves 24 and 25 apart (Fig. 15). A conical sleeve 30 presses the parts of the mold towards each other as they descend. The diameter of part 32 is exactly as large as the outside diameter of the closed mold, so that part 32 can be slid completely over the edge of the blow mold.
When the part 32 goes up (as soon as the part has been blown), the glass container 6 nevertheless remains in the blowing mold 2, until the latter has opened, because the springs 11 (Fig. 18) press the upper part or cover 3 of the mold, together with the glass container 6, downwards. It is only when part 32 and pipe 8 have moved further away from the open blow mold that a flange 34 (Figs. 12 and 13) of the pipe 8 lifts the cover 3 of the blow mold at the same time. time that the glass and remove it from the mold.
Finally, the following remarks should be made again

In order to separate the remaining adhering glass from the top or cover suitable devices are shown in Figs. 21 to 24, In the form of a mold cover shown in FIG. 21, the punch 42 is threaded and its internal diameter is equal to that of the external edge of the receptacles to be sent. As soon as the glass receptacle is detached by bursting, the rest of the glass is forced out by screwing outwards by means of fist 42.
When making the glass container according to Figs, 22-24, the edge of the glass container is clamped firmly in the mold cover during the blowing operation to prevent. the escape of the pressurized air during the blowing. For this purpose, an intermediate mold 43 was placed between the cover of the mold and the blowing mold, which would allow easy cutting at 17.
The container is blank according to FIG. 22. The edge) in the form of a plate, of the glass container is formed in this case between the upper annular surface 44 of the intermediate mold, which forms the upper edge 48 of the roughing mold, and the punch 41.
In the blowing position according to FIG. 23, the punch 41 is lowered a little and therefore the outer annular edge of the glass container is pressed between the punch and the intermediate mold 43, after which the container is blown to see:
After the edge has been blown off, the cover is removed from the mold, in accordance with FIG. 24 the remainder of glass 46 which de-, 6 dies adhering to this cover, the remainder of the glass is then suddenly cooled, which makes it crumbly and easily breaks up.
The ...,) intermediate mold is taken out of the upper part or cover of the mold and the rest of the glass is removed in the direction of arrow 47.
The punch 41 is then returned to its original position shown in FIG. 22, the intermediate mold 43 participating in this movement thanks to small rods 45.

Instead of the drinking glass depicted on the Fige. 12 and 13, it is also possible to manufacture bottles according to Figs. 18, 19 and 20, according to which, as shown in the drawing, it is possible, contrary to what the old methods allow, also to blow the neck of the bottles.
Fig. 18 shows the roughing position, FIG. 19 blanks immediately before blowing and Fig. 20 the completed blown flask, in the open blow mold. The formation of the bulging blank according to FIG. 18 takes place in the known manner by rapidly rotating the roughing mold at different speeds. Experience shows that in this formation of the blank the mold and / or the glass must be cooled slightly. After the glass container shown in FIG. 20 has been completely blown, it is left in the blow mold, which can be opened, and the blow tube, which has been shaped as a punch 40, presses, before the cover is removed from the tube. mold, the top edge of the glass container into the finishing mold and thus forms the edge of the neck of the bottle.
The fixing of the edge of the blank of small objects, instead of being done by imprisonment as has been described, can be done by adhesion of the liquid glass to an iron part of the upper mold, This iron part in the form of a The ring could advantageously be removably attached to the upper mold, to allow its replacement in the event of wear. The other parts of the mold are chrome plated.
Finally, to maintain the temperature of the glass container exactly, photoelectric cells can observe its temperature and can act to regulate it:
