<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Product for automatic sealing of tire punctures
Various products have been proposed for the automatic sealing of punctures in tires. These products are placed in the inner tube of the tire and, when there is a puncture, the air which escapes through the perforation carries with it a part of the product which settles there, forming a sealing plug. Liquid or pasty products, which have the drawback of sticking in the air chambers and obstructing the inflation valves, have practically been abandoned in favor of powdered products, generally based on mica in fine flakes. whose role is to float in the air in the tire to immediately move towards the perforation to be sealed in the event of a puncture.
However, in use, mica proves to be insufficient as a sealing agent: on the one hand, too heavy mica flakes quickly fall from the perforations into @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the tire at rest and therefore do not prevent deflation when the vehicle is parked; on the other hand, the flakes suspended in the air of the tire gradually agglomerate under the effect of the humidity contained in the inflation air and after a certain time form compact balls devoid of any sealing action.
The subject of the present invention is a powder obturator product which is distinguished by the speed, efficiency and duration of its effects and which retains its qualities indefinitely.
According to the invention, the sealing product contains a proportion of aluminum powder consisting of very fine flakes, the extreme lightness of which ensures that they remain in suspension in the air of the tire both when running and at rest, so that 'at the slightest escape of air through a perforation, they flow into the latter and seal it permanently under the effect of the internal pressure of the tire, without having a tendency to fall down by their own weight. Other powdered mineral substances intended to facilitate and consolidate its action can be mixed with the aluminum powder, in particular talc, borax, mica, etc. It is advantageous that the mica, in particular, is in flakes of different calibers.
Furthermore, in accordance with the invention, a dehydrating substance, such as white stone powder, is added to the mixture which, by absorbing moisture from the inflation air, prevents any undesirable agglomeration of the powdery constituents of the sealing product in the tire. .
The composition of the product as well as the calibration of its constituents may vary according to the types of tires to be fitted and, in particular, according to the inflation pressure indicated for them. It is conceivable, in fact, that the same
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The composition and the same calibration can hardly give equivalent results in automobile tires at high and low pressure, nor in tires of motorcycles and bicycles, all of which have different characteristics.
By way of example, the following proportions can be given for the composition of sealing products in accordance with the invention:
Aluminum 15 to 30%
Talc 10 to 25%
Mica 20 to 30%
Borax 15 to 20%
White stone 20 to 30%
These carefully sieved constituents are stirred together until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. The product can be tinted by the addition of a dye, for example Prussian blue, ocher etc.
