<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"SPEED VARIATOR"
The present invention relates to a variable speed transmission and more particularly to a speed variator in which V-section pulleys and belts are used, which allows the walking speed to be changed for any purpose.
In general, the invention is intended
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to achieve a new and improved construction comprising pulleys and V-shaped belts combined with a main shaft capable of moving sideways to change the transmission speed. The lateral displacement of the main shaft takes place around axes oblique with respect to the fixed planes of the V-belts, and oblique with respect to the shaft itself. As a result, the main shaft performs a longitudinal movement when it is moved sideways in one direction or the other, the belts being kept in the same planes.
In addition to the object described above, the invention comprises features which will be explained below with reference to the appended drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a variable speed transmission according to the invention. This figure shows the drive in the minimum speed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the variable speed drive in the maximum speed position.
Fig. 3 shows the variator arranged to operate in the opposite direction to what is indicated in fig. 1 and 2.
FIG, 4 is a perspective of one of the components of the variator.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the variator, showing the members in the position corresponding to FIG. 1.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the position of the members corresponding to FIG. 2.
Fig. 7 is an axial section with more
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
large scale, following line VII-VII of fig.l.
Fig. 8 is a similar axial section, taken along line VIII-VIII of FIG. 2.
Fig. 9 is a side elevation of one of the components of the variator.
As can be seen in the drawings, the device according to the invention comprises a main shaft 1 mounted so as to be able to rotate in sleeves 2 and 3 held by the spacer 4, the sleeve 2 being integral with a pulley element 5 and the sleeve 3 With a pulley element 6, as otest shown in fig. 7 and 8.
A pulley element 7 which cooperates with the element 6 is pinned at 8 on the main shaft 1. The pulley element 9, which cooperates with the pulley element 5 can slide longitudinally on this shaft and so is even sleeves 2 and 3. Thus all these members are integral with the shaft in the direction of rotation. Like item 7, a hat. end 10 is pinned to the shaft 1. This cap contains a coil spring 11, which normally presses on the means of the element 9, so that the pulley elements are normally brought together under the action of the spring.
The sleeves 2 and 3 can rotate in bearings 12 of any suitable system. These bearings are carried by the ends of a sleeve 13 forming a housing and itself carried by the arms 14 and 15 articulated on the base 16 by means of the pins 17 and 18 and connected to the sleeve 13 by the pins 19 and 20. The sleeve 13 may contain a lubricant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
If we consider figs. 1, 2 and 3, we notice that the base 16 is oblique instead of being at right angles to the main shaft 1 and that the axes of the joints 17, 18, 19 and 20, parallel to each other, are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of this base and, consequently, oblique with respect to the axis of the shaft 1.
An operating handle 21 is fixed to the arm 14.
It is provided with a tenon 22 capable of moving in the arcuate groove 23 of the plate 24, the latter being mounted on the joints 19 and 20.
Consequently, with this lever, it is possible to move the main shaft and its pulley elements laterally, not in a direction perpendicular to the shaft 1, but along a line which projects obliquely with respect to this shaft when the variator is seen from above.
According to fig. 1 and 2, an electric motor 25 is connected by a V-section belt 26 to a grooved pulley also having a V-section and formed by the aforementioned elements 5 and 9. A similar V-section belt 27 also connects the grooved pulley formed by the elements 6 and 7 with the pulley 28 transmitting the power, this pulley being able to be arranged on a shaft 29 of any suitable type.
When the elements 6 and 7 are separated, as shown in fig. 1 and the elements 5 and 9 are brought together, the power transmission from the motor 25 to the shaft 29 takes place at a certain speed.
When the handle 21 is in the position
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
shown in fig. 2, the pulley elements 5 and 9 are moved apart and the elements 6 and 7 are brought together.
Therefore, the power transmission from the engine 25 to the shaft 29 takes place at a different speed? There is therefore an unlimited number of speeds between the two extreme positions of the handle 21, due to the action of the grooved pulleys and the variation in diameter. active, since the active diameter of each pulley is smaller when its elements are apart, and larger when its elements are brought together.
It will be noted that the base 16 has four slots 30, the directions of which converge towards the center of said base. When the latter is placed obliquely as shown in fig.l, two of the slots 30 receive fixing bolts 31 to hold the base in position on a strong support. The two slots and their bolts are then on a line projecting perpendicular to shaft 1, when the variator is seen from above. However; when you want to make a change from right to left, the base is placed obliquely, in the opposite direction, as shown in fig. 3, the other slots and their bolts being on a line projecting perpendicular to the main shaft 1, when the variator is viewed from above.
It also requires that the socket 13 be reversed to give it a different angle with respect to the base.
If the main shaft 1 were mounted so as to move laterally, without longitudinal displacement, it would result that the belts 26 and 27 would not remain in the same vertical planes, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
due to the beveled construction adopted for the pulleys. However, by placing the shaft 1 obliquely with respect to. the longitudinal axis of the base 16 and with respect to the axes 17, 18, 19 and 20 around which the main shaft can move, there is a more or less large longitudinal movement of the shaft when it is imparted a lateral movement , because the shaft does not move along a line parallel to the planes of the belts and projecting perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 1, when the variator is seen from above.
On the contrary, the lateral displacement of the shaft takes place along a line projecting obliquely with respect to the belts and with respect to the axis of the shaft, when the transmission is seen from above.
In this way, the longitudinal compensating displacement of the shaft 1 is sufficient to keep the two belts in their vertical planes, which is very desirable since for the best results the belts must remain in their vertical planes in order to rotate. properly on the pulleys.
It will be noted that the pulley ornaments 5 and 6 are kept at their spacing by means of the spacer 4 and that thus the axial pressure on the balls of the bearings is eliminated.
On the other hand, the bearings are placed between the two pulleys and these are on the outside on the end parts projecting from the shaft 1. As a result, it is very easy to put the belts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
on the pulleys and remove them without having to move or dismantle any part of the mechanism.
It will also be observed that the lubricant contained in the sleeve 13 serves to lubricate the bearings and it is understood that any suitable device, such as the stopper 33 shown on this sleeve, can be used to open and close the latter when filling it. oil, grease or other lubricant.
It will also be considered that the arms 14 and 15 comprising a certain number of parallel articulation axes, but placed obliquely with respect to the main shaft 1, and that these shafts are arranged so as to allow a certain longitudinal movement of the tree when it is moved sideways.
