DEVICE INCLUDING AN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE TUBE.
The present invention relates to a device comprising an electric discharge tube and more particularly a device provided with a negative slope tube, that is to say a tube in which the anode current becomes weaker in the event of a increase in control gate voltage.
In an electric discharge tube having a cathode, a grid and an anode, in which the distance from the grid to the anode is large compared to that existing between the grid and the cathode, and in which the potential of the grid is greater than that of the anode, a virtual cathode can be produced between the grid and the anode. The current flowing to a positive electrode located behind the virtual cathode is a function of the distance between the virtual cathode and the positive electrode and of the po-

-tential of the latter.
It is easier to understand the principle operation of a tube which comprises at least the three aforementioned electrodes, and of which also the voltages and dimensions have already been mentioned, by referring to FIGS. example.
The discharge tube 1 shown in FIG. 1 comprises a cathode 2, a grid 3 having a positive polarization with respect to the cathode, and an anode 4. In the event of a sufficient distance between the electrodes 3 and 4, it A virtual cathode can occur, for example at 5. In the location shown in FIG. 1, the virtual cathode cannot be produced closer to the positive grid than the value of the distance between grid 3 and the cathode 2. If the cathode current is limited only by the space charge, the location of the virtual cathode is substantially independent of the potential of grid 3, so that in this case the anode current is a function exclusively of the anode potential. .
When placing, as shown in Figure 2 which also includes parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, a grid 6 between the positive grid 3 and the cathode 2, which receives the potential of the charge of space, the location of the virtual cathode remains the same. When, however, the grid 6 is made more negative, the virtual cathode moves from the grid 3 to the anode 4, so that the anode current increases; in this case there is therefore a characteristic curve with a negative slope for the voltage at the gate 6 as a function of the current towards the anode 4.
Because, however, it is desirable to apply a negative potential to gate 6, which is to function as a control gate, a very large distance is required between gate 3 and anode 4 to produce a cathode. Virtual. Now, this distance can be considerably reduced by placing between this electrode, according to FIG. 3, a grid 7 which receives substantially a zero potential. If grid 7 is at the same distance to grid 3 as grid 6 @ the virtual cathode will be substantially the same distance to grid 3 as cathode 2.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 still suffers from the disadvantage of relatively low values of anode resistance and degree of amplification.
In order to avoid this drawback and to take full advantage of the advantages of a construction of this kind, the device making

the object of the present invention which comprises an electric discharge tube in which it is located successively between the cathode and the anode, a control grid, a grid having a positive potential and two grids whose voltage is not not greater than that of the cathode, the voltages applied and the various distances being such that a virtual cathode occurs between the last two gates.
Such a tube, object of the invention, is represented in FIG. 4, where the wall of the tube is designated by 1, the cathode by 2, a positive grid by 3, the anode by 4, the virtual cathode by 5, the control grid by 6, and a grid having the cathode potential by 7; in addition, a second grid 8 which preferably has the potential of the cathode is disposed between the virtual cathode and the anode.
To establish the desired condition, the various distances and tensions must be carefully chosen. In the case where the electrodes are flat and in parallel planes, and if the grids 7 and 8 receive the potential of the cathode, a virtual cathode will occur between these grids if the distance between the grids 6 and 3 corresponds to the distance between grids 3 and 7, and if the distance between grids 7 and 6 is equal to or greater than the distance between cathode 2 and grid 6, grids 6 and 7 having the same structure ture and the grid 8 being pierced with very narrow openings.
In one embodiment of the invention, the ratio between the distances from the cathode to the grid 6, from the grid 6 to the grid 3, from the grid 3 to the grid 7 and so on is 1: 2: 2: 4: 2, It is also necessary that the openings of the grid 8 are sufficiently narrow to separate by shielding the virtual cathode from the anode so that a high anode voltage can be used. Preferably, the voltages at the gates 6, 7 and 8 are zero or negative with respect to the cathode. One of these grids could be used as a control grid, and in this case the tube would have a positive slope if grids 7 and 8 were used as a control grid.
The tube which is the object of the present invention may for example comprise a cathode having a diameter of about 1 mm. an elliptical grid whose minor axis has a length of about 2 1/2 mm. and the major axis a value of about 3.1 mm. the grid being rolled up with a pitch of about 1 mm. and the wire having a thickness of 0.1 mm. The second grid from the cathode can then also have the shape of an ellipse, the minor axis having a value of 5 mm. and the major axis having a value of 5 1/2 mm., the pitch being about 1 1/2

mm. and the wire having a thickness of 0.12 mm.
For the following grid these values can be 7 1/2, 9, 1/2 and 0.15 mm., For the following grid 12 1/2 (cylindrical grill), 1.4 mm., The thickness wire having a value of 0.12 mm., while the diameter of a cylindrical anode may have a value of 15 mm.
Fig. 4 schematically shows an input circuit 9 and an output circuit 10, as well as two current sources 11 and 12.
Finally, fig. 5 shows, for a good understanding of the operation of the tube, a curve where the current towards the anode 4 is plotted as a function of the voltage on the grid 6 (Ia as a function of Vg). In this case, the tube according to the invention works in the zone represented by WR. A tube according to the invention can be used in a balanced assembly together with a normal tube, which is not possible, without the intervention of other means, with two known tubes. The tube can also be used for an oscillator, where a direct coupling can exist between the anode and the gate, because, in a tube which is the subject of the present invention, the anode voltage is in phase with the gate voltage.
In another application of a tube which is the subject of the invention, the positive grid is used as an output electrode; Because the entire anode current increases as the voltage at gate 3 becomes more positive, the positive gate current also increases rapidly, so that a steep slope can then be obtained.
