<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PATENT OF INVENTION PROCESS FOR TREATMENT OF MATERIALS CONTAINING TANTALUM
AND / OR NIOBIUM *
The present invention relates to the treatment of products (ores, metallurgical by-products or other products) containing tantalum and / or niobium in oxidized form in the presence of other metals. such of. tin. manganese and iron, either separately or in pairs or all three simultaneously.
The invention consists in separating all or part of the raw material from the elements tin, manganese * iron, before the extraction of tantalum and niobium.
The material can be subjected to a partial reduction operation, reducing the elements Sn, Mn, Fe of their compounds without affecting the compounds of Ta and Nb. For this purpose) the material is mixed in the desired proportions determined by experience. first possibly brought to the desired physical state (ground, pellet, etc *, *) *
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with a suitable reducing agent (eg charcoal).
The mixture is introduced into a container capable of being hermetically closed (oven or any container heated by any known means), the atmosphere of which can therefore be adjusted at will, both in terms of composition (reducing, neutral or oxidizing ) than pressure ,.
The mixture is then brought there to the desired temperature, determined in each particular case by experience, according to the composition of the mixture charged, and limited by the need to avoid producing any melting in the charge. the order of 800 to 1200 C has given good results.
'The product, after reduction and possible grinding, is then subjected to a leaching operation during which the metals tin, manganese and iron reduced in the previous operation will go into solution and will be separated. thus of the residue by any known means *
The extraction of tantalum and / or niobium contained in the residue will be greatly facilitated by the absence of tin elements. manganese, iron, impurities that accompanied them in the raw material. Oonme variant of the invention. the reduction of the raw material can be effected by means of reducing gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, water gas, etc.
According to another feature of the invention, a gas mixture is used to remove all or part of the tin elements. manganese, iron contained in the material, before carrying out the actual recovery of tantalum and / or niobium or as a gaseous mixture it is possible to use a mixture of hydrogen and chlorine, these two gases being preferably in propor- tion such that there is always in the presence more than one
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the hydrogen per chlorine molecule.
The raw material can be crushed beforehand, ground, pelletized and more generally subjected to any physical treatment considered advantageous for the application of the process. It is then brought into intimate contact, in any suitable device, with the mixture of hydrogen and chlorine and brought to the temperature desired for the reactions.
The temperature at which the operation is carried out is fixed by experience and is generally variable according to the composition and the nature of the material treated. It will be limited by the need to avoid melting the load. In some cases, temperatures between 760 and 1000 C have been found to be favorable.
As equipment, any known device can be used: furnace, tilting, oscillating or other, electric or not, with continuous or discontinuous cycle, where the material can be subjected to the action of hydrogen and chlorine gases without entering into it. direct contact with the flame and combustion gases from the heat source. By way of example we can cite the heating in electric resistance furnaces, in crucible or muffle furnaces, in retort.
The apparatus can be provided with any known device for the introduction of the gases on the one hand and the discharge of the gaseous products of the reaction on the other hand. It is also possible to collect together or separately by any known device. the gases which are given off at the various stages of the operation.
According to another characteristic feature of the invention), the tantalum and / or niobiferous material is subjected after removal of the elements Sn and / or one and / or Fe to a reducing melting at high temperature so as to reduce the elements Ta and / or Nb
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
separating the slag formed which is practically free of Ta and / or Nb and subjecting the alloy containing Ta and / or Nb as well as Si, Fe and other elements to a chemical treatment to recover the Ta and / or No, preferably in oxidized form.
By chemical treatment, the Ta and / or the Nb, recovered for example in the form of a concentrate of tantalic and / or niobic anhydrides, can serve as a starting point for the manufacture of either the metals Ta and / or Nb or else. of their ferro-alloys.
The invention can be carried out as follows
The raw material, brought to the physical state considered most advantageous for the development of the process, is subjected to a reducing melting in a furnace, for example in an electric arc furnace, in the presence of the proportions of reducing agent and of fluxes determined by the experience according to the composition and nature of the raw material taken for treatment.
This operation is carried out so as to pass through the slag the major part of the elements such as silica 'and lime possibly present in the tantalum and / or niobiferous products treated *.
The produced alloy, containing Ta, Nb, Si, Fe, etc., possibly present in the material treated, is subjected to a chemical treatment comprising for example the following operations ia) an attack of the alloying with H2SO4 in order to remove a large part of the iron, b) attacking the residue with a mixture of sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids to remove the silicon and complete the attack.
A final calcination of the residue makes it possible to obtain the Ta and / or the Nb in the form of anhydride concentrate which can be subsequently processed for the production of either ferro-tantalum
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and / or niobium, either tantalum or metallic niobium.
The process described above, in which the chemical attack of the material is preceded by a dry reduction, has among other things over the known processes the advantage of removing a large part of the raw material from the raw material. silica and lime before tackling the chemical treatment * The presence of these compounds would make this treatment difficult and expensive if ..... not
According to another feature of the invention, the elements Sn Mn, Fe are separated from the raw material in whole or in part before the extraction of tantalum and / or niobium, and the raw material is subjected to a partial reduction operation. in the presence of a suitable metal reducing agent Si, Ca Mg. taken separately ,,
or together in pairs or more are suitable for this operation *
The amount of reducing agent is dosed so that the desired reduction is limited to the impurities while leaving the oxides of Ta and / or Nb intact.
The treatment can take place in any suitable container or oven, hermetic or not, heated by any known means, for example in an electric oven.
The product of the reduction, after optional grinding, can be subjected to a leaching operation, during which the metals .. Sn,] la * Fe. Reduced in the previous% ion operas. will come into solution and will be separated; thus of the residue by any known means.
The leaching residue containing Ta and / or Nb will then be treated by any known means for the recovery of these metals. This recovery will be greatly facilitated by the absence of the Sn elements. One, $ Fe. Which accompanied them in the raw material.
