<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
au niveau de chaque élément raccord 62 à la boîte de raccorde- ment 63 correspondante par un conducteur 71 Ce dernier aboutit à l'une des bornes de deux interrupteurs aimants 72 et 73 reliés;
les interrup- teurs 72 ou 73 reviennent à leur position de repos tandique les interrupteurs du tronçon suivant entrent en jeu'.L'alimenta- tion en courant du conducteur 70 est ainsi assurée d'une façon ininterrompue, le tube 64 étant alimenté tronçon par tronçon;
Comme représenté, le conducteur isolé tronçonné 70 est re- lié au tableau A;

Le fonctionnement général'du dispositif de proteotion et de sécurité qui vient d'être décrit dans ses divers éléments est le suivant ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

DEVICE ENSURING THE PROTECTION AND THE SAFETY OF MOVEMENT OF CONVOYS USING RAILWAYS
The present invention relates to a device ensuring the protection and the running safety of convoys traversing the railway tracks. @
On railroad networks, the protection of convoys is currently generally ensured by a set of discs or signal lights placed along the tracks at given intervals and mechanically actuated 01 electrically.
The operation of the discs or the switching on and off of the lights is carried out either manually, from special stations provided on the track or from certain stations, or automatically, by the convoys whose protection must be ensured.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The protection system briefly recalled above, even when supplemented by additional audible signaling (crocodiles) is imperfect, a lack of visibility in foggy or snowy weather, or a momentary inattention of the driver of the convoy which could be the / cause of collisions and, consequently, of serious accidents'.
The subject of the invention is a perfectly efficient protection and safety device, applicable to all railway networks regardless of the traction mode used: steam, electric, gasoline, etc.
Thanks to the device according to the invention:
1 - Signaling by visual and audible means is carried out simultaneously and directly, on the one hand, on the hauling machines of the faulty convoys and, on the other hand, in so-called "switch" monitoring cabins. or level crossing
2 - The convoys likely to collide, in any way, can be stopped if necessary without the action of the mechanic.
The aforementioned device makes it possible to eliminate, in general, the discs or lights currently used along the tracks. It is however preferable to keep these means of signaling in particularly dangerous places. For this particular case, the device according to the invention provides mechanisms ensuring the automatic stopping of the convoy coming to pass any of these signals or lights while they are in their closed position.
The device according to the invention is essentially characterized in that it consists of a conductor cable arranged along each track and divided into sectors, each end of a cable sector being electrically connected to a switchboard. signaling mounted in a cabin provided for the connection of two successive cable sectors, said conductor cable being supplied with current from the convoy traction machine which is also equipped with a control panel.

signage reproducing the indications visible on the cabin panel '.
Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the appended drawings, in which: La, fig. 1 is a diagram of the installation mounted on the convoy traction machine, in the case of a steam locomotive - Fig. 2 is a schematic plan view, of a railway track, showing the assembly of the cable conductor, Fig. 3 is a detail view in sectional elevation, corresponding to that of FIG. 2, and showing the mounting, with respect to the track, of the conductor cable, FIG. 4 is a diagram showing the two cabins each provided at one of the ends of a conductor cable sector, FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating an auxiliary safety device combined with a disc on track *.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, (fiel) denotes a dynamo intended to supply low voltage current, of the order of 350 volts, for example, a conductor C, the arrangement of which will be: more particularly described with regard to fig. 2.
Dynamo D is mounted on the train traction machine and, in the case of a steam locomotive, under the tender.
The dynamo is driven, in the example chosen, by means of a turbine T coupled to the armature of said dynamo and supplied by a steam pipe controlled by a valve located within the reach of the mechanic: .
The current supplied by the dynamo D is collected at its positive 3 and negative 4 terminals by two conductors 5 and 6 on which are mounted two single-pole maximum circuit-breakers 7 and 8 and a general two-pole switch 9.
Terminal 3 is connected to the dynamic coil excitation coil.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
mo by a bypass 10 in which is inserted an automatic rheostat II. The driver. 2. is grounded to the traction machine at 1.2, and serves as a return wire for all the electrical devices of the installation provided on said machine. the output of the general bipolar switch 9 are mounted, in branch between the conductors-5 and 6 on the one hand, and by the conductor I3, a voltmeter 14 on the other hand, and by the conductor 15. one of the writing units 16 of a tachograph 17 '. The voltmeter 14 and the writing unit 16 are always in operation as soon as the switch 9 is closed.
Between the conductor 5 and the earth, a circuit controlled by a single-pole switch 10 is also connected as a bypass, and comprising a conductor 18, an automatic maximum and minimum circuit breaker 20, an ammeter switch 21, a conductor 18 ', the coil. induction 22 of a contactor 23 and friction members 24 intended to transmit the current supplied by the dynamo D to the conductor C arranged throughout the track '.
The circuit breaker 20 controls a magnet switch 54, the role of which is indicated below. The rubbers 24 formed by metal brushes are four in number arranged two at the front and two at the rear, on either side of the traction machine.
The contactor 23 makes it possible to close, separately, two circuits 35 and 26 made as a bypass between the conductor 18 and the return conductor 6. The circuit 25 which is closed when there is no current in the coil 22, supplies a light signal 27, colored in blue, for example, and called "cautious walking". on the circuit 26 are mounted, in series, a reversing switch 28 and, in bypass, a light signal 29 and a second recorder 50 of the tachograph 17.
By branching from the ammeter 21, between the conductor 18 and the return wire 6 is arranged a circuit 31, starting from a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
terminal '32 'of switching ammeter 21, and in which are interposed, in series, the changeover switch -: le, and coils 33 and 34 for controlling two contactors 35 and 36'.
When the coils of these two contactors 35 and 36 are traversed by a current, they close respectively a circuit 37 and a circuit 38, normally open. As shown, the circuits 37 and 38 are placed in bypass between the circuit 26 and the return conductor 6. Circuit 37 supplies bypass, two alarm signals, one light 39, the other 40 'sound.
Circuit 38 supplies a rotating field magnetic switch 41 actuated by a time delay clock movement, so as to ensure, in due time, contact between the pivoting member 42 of switch 41 and a terminal 43 of said switch. switch. , this terminal 43, are connected to the circuits 44 and 45 of two servo-brakes 4G and 47 intended respectively to close the steam line 48 of the locomotive, and to open the line 49 of compressed air. brake.
Two other circuits 50 and 51 arranged in bypass and connected to another terminal 52, of the switch 41, make it possible to return the servo-brakes 46 and 47 to their normal position *
In the event that circuit 18 will be interrupted, for any reason whatsoever, coils 33 and 34 of contactors 35 and 36 may ... be supplied by another circuit 53 mounted as a bypass between conductor 5 and the coil circuit. 33:
Circuit 53 is controlled by the aforementioned magnet switch 54 which closes this circuit only when circuit 18 has been opened by circuit breaker 20 '. In this case, circuit 53 controls the alarm signals 39,40 as before, as well as the servo-brakes 46, 47
The installation provided on the traction machine is finally completed by a circuit 55 mounted as a bypass between circuit 26 and the earth and continuously closed. In the circuit 55 are interposed a switch 56, the coil 57 of a contactor 58 and a wiper 59 located under the traction machine.

The trotter 39 is intended to come into contact with conductors 30 or 61 located in the middle of the track in the vicinity of a dis @ ue thus naked, it will be said with regard to FIG. 5. will see below, the disc being closed, the circuit 55 is itself closed, the contactor 58 closes the circuit 37 which supplies the alarm signals 39 and 40 and the control members of the servo-brakes via the circuit 31 and the ammeter switch 21
The equipment of the railway includes the installation of the conductive cable C (figs 2, 3 and 5) and that of the so-called switch "or" level crossing monitoring cabins (fig.4) '.
The conductor cable C which as well as it has. previously said is provided, over the entire length of the track, is arranged outside the rails and divided into sectors of varying lengths and of the order of 5 to 7 kilometers, for example. Each sector ends at each of its ends at a surveillance cabin.
The conductor has an outer casing consisting of a metal tube 64, made of galvanized iron, for example, fixed to brackets 65 with claws placed on the side of the track, and outside, and adjusted on the base of the corresponding rail 16.: .The upper part of the fittings 65 is terminated by a part 67, made of insulating material, unbreakable, incombustible and not shattering, provided with two perpendicular grooves one serving for its attachment to the fitting, the meter. to receive the support 68 of the conductive tube '.
The latter is thus electrically isolated from the ground. The tube 64 of the same sector is divided into sections which are electrically insulated from one another and connected by a connecting element 62 which ends in a sealed box 63 called "connection". - That section has a length of the order of I.OUO meters, for example. Similar fittings 69 are provided at the location of the connection boxes 63.
Inside the tube 64 is mounted a conductor 70 connected
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
at the level of each connection element 62 to the corresponding junction box 63 by a conductor 71 The latter ends at one of the terminals of two connected magnet switches 72 and 73;
the first, to one of the sections of the cable Ç by a conductor 74, the second to the other section, by a conductor 75 '. The two condwers 74 and 75 are connected to the sections by means of wire clamps 76
Thanks to this assembly, when the current coming from the dynamo D is brought to one of the sections of the sector by the trotters 24, only this section is traversed by the current *. This has the effect of closing the magnet switches 72 or 73 corresponding and ensure the passage of the current from the tube 64 to the conductor 70. As soon as the wipers 24 leave the section considered,
the switches 72 or 73 return to their tandic rest position the switches of the following section come into play '. The current supply of the conductor 70 is thus ensured in an uninterrupted manner, the tube 64 being supplied section by section;
Inside the tube 64 is finally 'mounted a second insulated conductor 77, each end of which is connected to one of the tables of a surveillance cabin'.
In fig. 4 which represents an installation diagram of the two monitoring cabins each located at one of the ends of a cable sector, ¯64 / designates the sup- plied pipe sector supplied by the wipers 24.70 and 77 the cut-off insulated conductor and the continuous insulated conductor mounted in this tube and connecting the two cabins A @ and B. Each cabin has a starting panel At or B 'and an arrival panel A ". or B", each panel departure point of a cabin being connected to the arrival panel of the following cabin by the aforementioned driver:
As shown, the chopped insulated conductor 70 is linked to Table A;
by a conductor 78 terminating at the conductor 77 by the conductor 78 'and on which are mounted the coil 79 of a contactor 80 and a switch 81 Likewise, the con-

conductor 70 is connected to table B "and to earth 82 by a conductor 83, terminating at the conductor 77 by a conductor 83t On the conductor 83 are interposed the coil 84 of a contactor 85 and a switch 86 called" in parallel "of the two coils of contactors 80 and 85.
With the assembly shown, when switch 86 is in the position shown, it closes the circuit from wipers 24 to ground 82 through conductors 70,78,78 ', 77, 83' and 83 '.
When the coil 79 is traversed by a current, the annunciator 80 closes, on the one hand, a circuit 87, connected as a bypass between the conductor 78 and the earth, and supplying an audible control signal 86, and d 'on the other hand, a circuit 89 connecting the earth to a two-way switch 90. Another circuit 91, connected, on the one hand, to the circuit 87 and, on the other hand, to the switch 90 allows, for a given position of the latter, to connect the conductor 78 directly to the earth.
In its rest position, the contactor 85 closes the circuits 92 and 93 of the board B 'connecting the conductor 83' on the one hand, to the switch 90 of the board B 'and on the other hand, to the earth, which makes it possible to supply a light signal 94 called "cautious operation", colored in blue, for example.
In its working position (case of fig. 4), contactor 85 closes circuits 95 and 96 connecting conductor 83, on the one hand, to switch 90 and, on the other hand, to earth, which used to supply an audible signal 97
The installation is glued to the board A 'by a circuit 98 connecting the conductor 78 to the earth and controlled by the switch 81.
In this circuit 98 are mounted a light alarm signal 99 and an audible alarm signal 100, which function in the event of a break in the conductor 77.
The organs in table A 'are identical to those in table
B 'and the organs of table B' to those of table A

The general operation of the protection and safety device which has just been described in its various elements is as follows;
The dynamo D being driven by the turbine T and the bipolar switch 9 being closed, the current supplied by the dynamo passes through circuits 13 of the voltmeter 14 and 15 of the writer 16 of the tachograph 17 to reach the wipers 24, by closing the single-pole switch 19.
As soon as the convoy sets off and the trotters 24 come into contact with a sector of the conductor C located along the track, the current flows in circuit 18 which has the effect of placing the switch 23 in its .. working position (fig.1) thus closing the circuit 26 supplying a light signal 29 for checking the correct operation of the traction machine, and the entry 30 of the tachograph 17. At the same time the current supplied by the dynamo D to the driver c goes, by the driver 70 to the panels A 'and B "of the cabins A and B.
This results in, the contactor 80 being brought to its working position (fig. 4) the operation of the audible control signal 88 and the closing of the circuit 89 which causes, as will be seen below, the locking of the previous sector. which leads to panel A "of cabin A.
In cabin B, the flow of current has the effect of placing in table B "the contactor 85 in the position shown (fig. 4) '. This results in the operation of the audible control signal 97 and the closing. circuit 95, which also results in the locking of the sector leaving from table B ',
The sector over which the convoy is traveling is thus armed for its protection and security.
Assuming that sector 1 is traversed by a convoy, and that a second convoy enters by the same way on the preceding sector 11, the departure and arrival boards of the cabins located at the ends of sector II will be crossed by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
current supplied by the dynamo of the second convoy, which will have the effect of operating the contactors 80 and 85 of these panels as well as the audible control signals 88 and 99 '. As soon as this occurs, switch 90 of panel A' is activated moves ensuring direct communication between circuits 95 and 69. As a result of the closing by switch 90 of the circuits placed in bypass between the dynamos and the tare,
there is a decrease in the resistance of the network supplied by said dynamos and consequently a greater flow rate thereof. This flow through the switching ammeter 21 mounted on each machine, has the effect of close the circuit 31 on which the contactors 35 and 36 are mounted. The contactor 35 closes the circuit 37 for supplying the alarm signals 39 and 40 and the contactor 36 causes the rotating field magnetic switch to operate with a certain delay 41, which actuates the servo-brakes 46 and 1! The two traction machines are then stopped automatically. our avoid the automatic stopping of the two maéchines,
the mechanic of the faulty machine (the one located on sector 11) cut off the current that his dynamo sends to the sector through switch 19. This maneuver has the effect of disengaging the alarm devices 39 and 40 of the two traction machines and of the servo-brakes 46 and 47, the convoy which is not at fault, that is to say that of sector I can then continue its march. The mechanic of the faulty transmission must not restart it until after having noticed that sector II has been unlocked by intermittently operating the switch 19 mounted on his machine.
In the exceptional case, where two convoys would enter simultaneously on the same sector (case of two convoys walking in opposite directions on the same track), the current sent to the conductor by the two dynamos passes to the switches
72 and 73 (fig. 2), has an insulated conductor 70 placed in the tube 64 and puts the two dynamos in short circuit. At this moment the dis-
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
automatic junctors with minimum maximum 20, of the two machines cut the current on the conductor c and close, by the magnet switches 54 the circuits 53 which actuate the alarm devices and the servo-brakes of the two machines'. current movements are recorded by the tachograph recording devices. 17.
The protection and safety device described also remedies the cases where some of the conductors used are accidentally or maliciously cut.
1st case. : If the conductive tube 64 is the only one cut on any of the sections of the sector, the current sent to this section passes either through switch '2, or through switch
73 of this section to the driver 70. The A and ± cabins remain normally excited.
2nd case: If the conductor 70 fixed in the conductor tube 64, is cut on a section, the current passes either to cabin A or to cabin B.
The cabin A being supposed to be connected with the driving machine of the convoy, the locking of the preceding sector is carried out normally; The locking of the following sector is ensured by the current of the output conductor 78 'of the coil 79 of the contactor 80 This current flows directly through the conductor 77, the switch 85 of the board B 'being in its rest position, to the circuit 92 of the two-way switch 90 and to the circuit 93 of the light signal 94 for safe operation.
After the 'cut-out' has passed, cabin.e B receives the current, it is put in connection with the traction machine, signal 94 goes out and the locking is normally ensured on the following sector '.
Cab A remains energized by driver 77 and alarm signals 99 and 100 operate covering the previous sector.
3rd Case: if driver 78 'in cabin A is cut off a-
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
Near the switch 81, the current from the con uctor 78 passes to the coil 79 to the magnet switch 81 which activates the circuit 98 of the alarm signals 99 and 100 At the same time, the sector proceeds is locked.
4th case: If the tube 64 as well as the conductors 70 and 77 are cut on a section of the sector, the light signal 27 of the traction machine, warns the mechanic of the accident. Cabins A and 2 are also warned of the incident by stopping the audible signals 88 and 97.
The track equipment is preferably supplemented by discs arranged along the track, in particular at places where the route is particularly dangerous, crossings, etc.
This additional equipment is shown in fig'.5 in which the members corresponding to those of fig. 2 are designated by the same reference characters.
A disc being shown schematically at 101, there is approximately one kilometer upstream of this disc and between the two rails 66 of the track, the first conductor 60 mentioned with regard to FIG. I. This conductor 60 which has a length of about one hundred meters, for example, is analogous to conductive cable c.
Its mounting relative to the ground is similar, also, to that of said conductor c
The conductor 60 is connected to the disc IOI, by an insulated conductor 102 housed in the tube 64 (FIG. 3) of the conductor c.
The second conductor 61 indicated above (FIG. 1) with a length of approximately 250 meters, is also arranged between the two rails 66 so that one of its ends ends at the level of the disc 101. The conductor SI is electrically connected to the disc 101 by a conductor 103.
The conductors 102 and 103 lead to two terminals 104 and 105 mounted in a shielded box 106 fixed, preferably, to the pylon of the disc. In this box is provided a contact 107 connected to the earth at 108 and, for example, to the rail 66 , said contact being
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
integral in rotation with the axis of the disk ICI '. The arrangement of the contact 107 is such that when the ICI disc is closed, it comes into contact with the terminals 104 and 105. In this position, when the wiper 59 (fig.I) of the traction machine comes to bear on the conductors 60 and 61 the alarm and shutdown circuits of the installation provided for the prime mover are brought into play.
The protection and safety device which has just been described is easy to apply, owing to its simple assembly and the repair facilities which it offers, thanks to the interchangeability of the parts. the constituent
It goes without saying that the device has been described only for explanatory purposes, in no way limiting, and that various modifications of detail could be made to the form of embodiment indicated, without going beyond the scope for this. of the invention '.
