<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Ainsi la localisation de la chaleur s'effectue parfaitement et d'une façon aussi efficace que possible; auoun dégagement inutile de chaleur ou d'énergie ne se produit; la machine peut fonctionner avec une très grande vitesse et avec une grande régularité;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Process for electrically welding tubes and machinery for its implementation.
We already know machines for welding tubes continuously, in which the current is brought by means of pressure rollers or oon- taot rollers, arranged on the sides or the upper part of the tube, or on the edges of the slot. Most of the machines proposed to date have the disadvantage that the production of heat by the electric current is not suitably localized and that the pressure intended to ensure the bringing together of the parts to be united does not take place. suitably at the opportune moment so that the welding speed remains low
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and that the performance is very poor.
In particular, machines are known in which a first electrode roller, connected to one of the poles, is brought into contact with the two edges of the tube, while the electrode rollers connected to the other blade are offset with respect to the first. roller in the direction of the welded joint, so that the current passes mainly along the edges of the pipe to be welded. This known arrangement does not allow a rapid and good quality weld to be obtained. Indeed, the weld cannot be done at the point of contact of the first electrode roller arranged on the edges of the tube, because the tube is still cold when it passes under this first roller.
In this known process, the welding is carried out at the level of the downstream roller, because the upstream roller is unable to cause the blank to pass directly and instantaneously from a zero temperature to a melting temperature. There is no localization of the place where the welding is carried out, from which heat losses result, burrs, etc ... It is therefore necessary to pass a current density that is too high such as that the metal is burnt under the upstream roller before being welded.
To remedy this drawback, it has therefore been proposed to subject the tube to heating using auxiliary rollers; for this purpose, it has been proposed to use indirect welding rollers disposed on each side of the pipe joint and a direct welding roller disposed on the joint. It has also been proposed to use two rollers between which a difference in auxiliary potential is introduced; but these different devices are very complicated and of uncertain performance.
The object of the present invention is to remedy the previous drawbacks, its object in particular to ensure direct welding and indirect welding in a single operation and with the aid of a very
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
simple and very effective.
For this purpose, it relates to a process for electrically welding tubes in which the blank moves with a continuous translational movement, a process characterized by the fact that the upstream side of the electrode rollers for supplying current are placed. which channel the current in the whole of the tube and thus prepare the weld, while there is on the downstream side on the slot of the tube to be welded, a single current starting electrode roller which produces a very intense localized heating and completes the welding.
Thus the essential characteristic of the process according to the invention consists in the direction of displacement of the blank relative to the electrode rollers, the tube passing first between the side rollers united at the same potential and then under the tube. single roller placed on the slot of the tube.
This process, as a result of the heating of the blank throughout its section, eliminates in the welded tube any work hardening effect resulting from the operations of closing the tuba by winding the strip on itself. In this way, internal tensions that can arise are eliminated.
For all these reasons, annealing, which was an essential operation in the known methods, becomes unnecessary in the method according to the invention, which economizes on the installations and minimizes the expenditure in manpower and in calories.
The elimination of the annealing furnace also avoids the deformation of the metal tube, softened by the annealing in the furnace; as a result, the operations of straightening the tube are reduced in considerable proportions, which further lowers the cost price of the finished product.
Finally, the speed of production is increased considerably.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The method according to the invention is much simpler than the known methods, that is to say allows the current densities to be varied within much greater limits, this increase in the density being able, moreover, to be used without risk of burning the tube, since the upstream rollers are applied to the tube by very large surfaces, thus preventing the formation of a dangerous current density at any point of the tube.
The finished products obtained by the process of the application exhibit a smooth, finished and bluish appearance due to the removal of any scale film, i.e. raw metal, on the tube. This tube is thus in the optimum conditions for receiving a very adherent layer of zinc.
According to one embodiment, on the upstream side, laterally on either side of the tube, two current feed rollers are placed and these rollers are made to act so as to press the tube and keep its lips apart. suitable.
According to a variant, the quantity of heat given off by the electrodes is regulated by means of an additional electrode in contact with the tube, this electrode being brought to varying potentials with respect to the welding electrodes.
The process of the invention can be carried out as shown schematically in FIG. 1 of the accompanying drawing.
Several rollers are placed in parallel on the cold metal, so as to ensure excellent contact. The "upstream" rollers are preferably arranged laterally at 13 and electrically joined to one of the poles of the transformer.
The amount of heat released under the side rollers 13 is relatively low, and there is no need to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
order at this point a premature melting of the metal; at the same time, the whole of the tube at 17 is brought to the temperature corresponding to the elastic limit, which avoids internal forces and allows easy forging and easy bringing together of the two lips to be welded.
A single roller 15 is placed downstream; as a result, the quantity of heat released under this roller is relatively large at 18, and sufficient to ensure excellent contact of the two lips while achieving the suitable and uniform temperature of the metal at the exact point of the weld,
Thus the localization of the heat is carried out perfectly and as efficiently as possible; no unnecessary release of heat or energy occurs; the machine can work with very high speed and with great regularity;
the roughness which can be found on the surface of the tube has no adverse effect on the total flow rate of the machine since the tube offers a large contact surface for the rollers 13,
Figure 2 makes it possible to see how the current passes inside the tube, which makes it possible to ensure the weld on the inside at 18 'as perfectly as on the outside at 18; The result is obtained thanks to the side rollers 13 which force the current to pass inside the tube.
In the variant of FIG. 3, the previous method is further improved, by introducing a lateral pressure roller 21 having a certain potential difference with respect to the welding roller 20,
As in the case of Figure 1, there are the two "upstream" rollers 19, the main supply transformer 22 and the single roller 20 disposed downstream at the weld point; a dotted line shows a possible roller 19 ', electrically connected to the roller 19.
The pressure rollers 21 are connected to the secondary winding of a transformer 24, whose
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
opposite terminal is connected with the "upstream" rollers 19 and possibly 19 '. When Iton places the switch 25 on a dead pad, no current passes through the secondary circuit of the transformer 24, due to the high reactance of that -this. The current delivered by the transformer 22 is completely channeled in the tube between the rollers 19 and 20, If, on the other hand, the switch 25 of the transformer 24 is adjusted, so as to pass a current in the direction indicated by the arrows and to metering this current appropriately, we reduce the intensity of the stitching which passes through the tube from 19 to 21 and we increase the current which passes from 21 to 20.
This results in a lower heating of the part of the tube lying between 19 and 21, and nevertheless a more intense heating of the metal at the precise point where the welding is to take place, under the downstream roller 20. .
Since the transformer 22 can be adjusted by means of the switch 23, there is therefore a means of independent adjustment of the heating of the tube on the one hand and of the heating of the slot at the precise place where the welding is to be carried out. on the other hand, which is not possible with any of the known systems.
The invention also extends to a machine for implementing the above-explained methods, this machine is shown by way of example in the attached drawing in which:
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of the weld roller support,.
FIG. 5 represents the embodiment of the individual adjustment of the pressure of said roller, and its rapid displacement = of to release the blank.
FIGS. 6 and 7 are cross sections of the device for supporting and supplying current to the electrode rollers.
Figure 8 is a general view of the machine.

The device shown in FIG. 4 is intended to adjust the contact pressure of the "downstream" roller or of the weld on the tube, as a function of the variations which may occur in the supply current of the machine.
The welding roller 27, the current supply of which is omitted for the simplicity of the diagram, receives the pressure of the spring 28, by means of a lever 29 having its point of articulation at 30. lant 31 is used to adjust the pressure supplied by spring 28, the reaction being taken partly by the tube at the point of contact with roller 27 (welding pressure) and partly by stop 32, which receives it from the threaded rod 33, which rod is adjustable using the handwheel 34.
On this rod is fixed a far core 35 subjected to the magnetic action of the coil 36 which is integral with the frame, and which is connected to the current source 37 by means of an adjustable rheostat 38,
The effect of the attraction exerted on the iron core 35 by the coil 36 lifts the rod 33 from the stopper 32 and has the effect of further compressing the spring 38 and, consequently, increasing the pressure of. contact of roller 27,
The position of the rheostat 38 makes it possible to adjust the action of the coil 36.
It is now assumed that the voltage of the current decreases; The attraction of the iron core 35 will be reduced and the impression of the wheel on the tube will also be decreased, which will have the effect of increasing the contact resistance between the wheel 27 and the tube, and automatically comen on the reduction. of current, while retaining the same calorific effect.
The coil can obviously be interposed in the primary or secondary circuit of transformer 22 of FIG. 1, so that the current will act as a direct and automatic compensator for the solder temperature.

The automatic variation of the pressure of the welding rollers as a function of the welding current or of the supply voltage can obviously be obtained by means other than that indicated by way of example in FIG. 2, without having to do so. outside the scope of the present invention, the novelty of the latter residing in the automatic regulation of the temperature, at the precise place where the welding is to be carried out, by direct or indirect action, total or partial of the current on the contact pressure of the welding roller.
In Figure 5, there is shown separately and in its practical embodiment, the mechanical pressure device already indicated in Figure 2. The lever 29 is guided by the rod 39, which slides in the support 40. A nut 41, integral with the rod 39, makes it possible to limit the stroke of this rod and consequently of the wheel 27 by abutting on the bottom of the hole 42. In this way, the wheel is prevented from plunging into the hole. the tube should be split in case, for some reason, the hot metal should give way or does not move out under the pressure of the knob. The clearance 43 determines the total height travel of the wheel 27, under the effect of the pressure of the spring 28.
The handwheel 34 allows its side to raise the knob of the blank by acting on the screw 33, the upper end of which provided with a éorou, abuts on the pivoting part 32, The handwheel 31 is used to adjust the pressure spring. To be able to know the compression value of the latter, there is provided a dial 44 on which moves a hand integral with a small toothed wheel 45 which is controlled by a rack 46, the height displacement of which accompanies that of the flywheel 31 and indicated by Consequently the linear value of compression of the spring 28, It can be seen that, thanks to this device, it is possible to instantly raise the wheel of the blank, by acting on the flywheel 34,
without the pressure determined

born by the steering wheel 31 is out of order.
FIG. 6 shows in detail the welding wheel 27 and the device for guiding, conducting the current and circulating water thereof.
The wheel 27 is mounted by means of screws and nuts 47, on a hollow shaft 48. This hollow shaft carries on the one hand the opening 68 by means of the threaded ring 49 and the cap 50, and on the other hand leaves a tube 52 by means of the ring 51 screwed into the opposite end of the oreux shaft 48. the hollow shaft 48 has a bulging part 48a and is surrounded by a fixed opening 53, in which it can rotate. A chamber 54 is formed between the outer wall of the bulging portion inside the vessel 53.
The sealing of this chamber is ensured by joints 55 and 56, arranged so as not to oppose the rotation of the hollow shaft 48. This tank is filled with mercury by a plug 57, another plug. 76 used for emptying.
According to the invention, the seal 55 is formed by a woven asbestos tape 73, wound in one or a few layers around a smooth part 74 of the shaft 48.
On the tape is disposed a flexible rubber ring 75 which, due to its extensibility, can be slipped over the part 48a. During assembly of the bearing $ and which consists of two halves, this ring 57 is compressed in the housing. This seal ensures a perfect seal, the asbestos allows a very smooth sliding of the shaft, the rubber ensures a gentle and constant pressure on the asbestos, while preventing the mercury from passing on the sides.
The vessel 53 forms, on the outside, two conically shaped housings 59 and 59a, in which the current supply terminals 60 and 60a are mounted.
The latter being tightened by means of the studs
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
threaded 61. In these loops are welded the ends of the cables coming from the secondary of the welding transformer.
The current passes through these terminals, then through the part 53 and the mercury bath contained in the chamber 54 is brought to the support of the wheel and to the latter.
In this way, contacts that are as satisfactory as possible are obtained, a constant tightness of the de- meroure enclosure and minimal friction of the axis of the wheel,
The water intended to cool the latter is supplied by a nozzle 62. This nozzle is integral with the fixed part 63, the seal between the rotating part and the fixed part being obtained by means of the seals 64 and 65, subjected to the action of a spring 66.
The water passes inside the tube 52, then in the channels 67 provided in the stopper 49 and circulates in the chamber 68, cooling the wheel 27. The water is then discharged through the channels 69. and the part 70 between the interior of the part 48 and the outer wall of the tube 52, to pass through the lights 71 provided in the socket 51, in the chambers 72 so as to cool the contacts of the kids 60 and also the partition 53 which surrounds the mercury bath. The water is finally discharged into a side nozzle 621.
Part 48, 48a is made of copper alloy. In order to avoid the action of mercury on the part and the resulting leaks, the surfaces in contact with the mercury are covered with a metal which cannot be attacked by the latter, for example with an electrolytic layer of chromium.
FIG. 7 represents the two "ament" rollers with their device for supplying current and cooling water. The two rollers 77 are journaled on the two supports 78, the arrangement of which on the machine emerges from FIG. 6.
The shaft 79 is fixed to the roller by screws 11
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
is developed in its upper part in the form of a So tank, filled with mercury. This shaft and its bowl consequently follow the rotational movement of the roller. A conductive part 81 plunges through its two curved ends into the two tanks. It is provided at its upper part with a semi-cylindrical contact surface, on which is clamped, by the cover 82 and its fixing screws, a cylindrical rod 83, current conductor which removes the part 81 with the transformer pole opposite to that of the welding roller (fig. 6).
Each of the shafts 79 is hollow 'and receives the cooling water by means of its integral pipe 84, to which is applied by a spring 85 a fixed nozzle for supplying water 86. Holes 87 provided on the rollers 77 , allow the exit of the cooling water, The rod 83 itself is hollow and also cooled by circulating water. The same arrangements as for parts 53 and 48a (fig. 9) are taken with a view to protecting their surfaces against the action of grinding. The clearance provided at 88 makes it possible to move the two rollers (and their integral part) with respect to one another, without the fixed part 81 being dragged. The cover 89 protects the mercury from external agents.
FIG. 8 shown by way of example the assembly of a machine produced in accordance with the invention.
Current flows as shown by arrows *
The transformer 90 supplies on the one hand the upper roller 91, on the other hand the two side rollers 92 and 93.
The arrival of the current at the wheels 92 and 93
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
arranged in parallel, is done through a mercury bath, in accordance with Figure 5.
The current is started by a single roller 91 arranged on the slot. The passage of the current and its connection to the transformer have already been described in figure 1.
The two rollers 92 and 93 are mounted on a carriage 94, adjustable in all directions.
The clamping of the tube between the roller 92 and the roller 93 is ensured using the screw 95.
At the level of the wheel 91 are two pressure rollers 96 and 97, which allow the intimate approach of the two sides of the tube wall, in the vicinity of the point where the welding takes place.
These two rollers are adjustable by means of the screw 98. The assembly of these two rollers is moreover mounted on a carriage 99, the position of which can be adjusted. The preform of the tube which has been suitably prepared passes through a guide roller 100, before entering between the two current feed rollers 92 and 93. Immediately after the weld is made, the tube is guided by a roller 101, capable of being oriented in all directions and an adjustable scraper tool 102, completes the work finish by removing excess burrs,
The pressure of the roller 91 is provided by a system of levers 103, the assembly being suspended on a carriage 104.
The whole of the device which makes it possible to ensure an adjustable pressure, a rapid separation of the wheel, etc. has already been described in detail in FIG. 3,
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
The position of the carriage 104 which supports the wheel 91 can be adjusted parallel to the tube, by means of the screw 105, as is clear from the appearance of the figure.
All the components can be adjusted independently of each other, the length which separates the two "upstream" rollers from the "downstream" roller can be modified at will in order to adjust the speed of passage of the tube. Likewise, the pressure of the side rollers can be modified, as well as the position of the pressure rollers in relation to the welding rollers, etc.
The tube blank can be removed very easily from the machine.
The entire mechanism is' mounted on a general frame 106 which is integral with the frame 107 which supports the transformers.
For greater clarity, the circulation of water used for cooling the various parts of the machine has not been shown, and the switch which is used to adjust the welding current has also been omitted.
