<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Interchangeable element for heating electric ovens @ and other similar installations.
The present invention relates to the heating, by electric resistances, of electric ovens and other similar installations, in which the heating elements are housed in conduits or channels surrounding the chamber or the space to be heated. Its purpose is to allow easy and rapid replacement of these elements, and to prevent any contact between the resistance wires and the walls of the housings of the elements, while ensuring, with suitable fixing of the elements in their housings, the thermal insulation towards the ends of the elements, so as to avoid heat losses at the ends and to give the maximum thermal efficiency of the installation.
Essentially, an element in accordance with the invention is composed of a sillimanite or other refractory tube on which the resistance wire is wound in more or less tight turns.
In each end of the tube is sealed a metal plug to which is welded one end of the resistance wire, Cha-

that the plug is axially perforated to receive the threaded end of a metal rod, the other end of which is screwed into a metal part to which the wire or the supply terminal is connected or. current return. Between said part and the metal stopper, an asbestos tube or a set of asbestos washers is threaded, tightened one against the other by screwing the threaded rod. This tube or these washers have a larger diameter than that of the refractory tube reinforced with the resistance wire, and this diameter corresponds to the internal diameter of the housing in which the heating element is to be mounted.
The two asbestos blocks thus constitute thermal insulation preventing the loss of heat towards the ends of the housing; they prevent any contact between the walls of the housing and the resistance wire and, in certain cases, constitute elements for fixing the heating element. in its 10- gement.
The object of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which: fig.l is the axial section of a complete element, fig. 2 represents the end of a variant of the element. fig.5 and 4 are cross sections of an element mounted in an oven.
1 is a sillimanite or other refractory tube, the length of which corresponds to the height of the heating chamber 2 of the furnace around which the elements must be arranged for example in cylindrical 3 (fig. 3) or rectangular 4 (fig. 4) extending over the entire height of the oven, these channels being open at both ends and open laterally over the entire height of the heating chamber (opening 5). The channels are in the examples of fig. 3 and 4 made directly in the refractory mass 6 which surrounds the heating chamber 2.
On the tube 1 is wound, in more or less tight turns,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a wire 7 forming an electric heating resistance; each end of the tube 1 is closed by a metal plug 8, sealed in the tube, and in a hole 9 of which is welded the corresponding end of the wire 7. Each plug is axially crossed by a hole in which the threaded end is screwed a metal rod 10, the other end of which is screwed into a metal socket 11. This socket 11 is provided with an axial housing for receiving a split plug 12 of the socket; the plug is carried by the end of a leaf spring 13 fixed to terminal 14 to which the current supply or return wire is connected at 15.
Between the plug 8 and the sleeve 11, a series of asbestos washers 16 (or a tube of asbestos or any other thermally and electrically insulating material) is threaded onto the rod 10; these washers are tightened against each other by screwing the sleeve 11 on the rod 10.
As seen in fig.l, only one of the ends of the element is provided with the spring 13; the other end has a shoe plug 17 leading directly to the current wire at 18.
Instead of the socket 11 with plug, it is possible (fig. 2) to use a bolt whose head 19 is hollowed out to receive the rod 10, while the bolt rod 20 serves to receive and tighten the blade 13.
