<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

xima en quittant ce dispositif;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Process for the purification of gases, vapors or liquids.
Devices for removing gases, air and the like, and even liquids, for example condensates, of foreign bodies such as dust, oil, water or the like are already known by using fabric or wire mesh filters. , or constituted by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
layers of metal shavings, the stream of fluid to be purified being conveyed through these filters at a speed substantially lower than that which this current normally possesses in the inlet or outlet pipe of the filtering device.
The pressure drop due to the increase in the passage section and the lowering of the temperature of the current to be purified, possibly increased by the contact with the metallic filling of the filter, cause well by comparison with the old means and more primitive, for example with the simple centrifugation obtained by giving the fluid a spiral or helical movement, a significant improvement.
However, filtering devices of this type, known until now, do not yet make it possible to achieve a satisfactory degree of purity. It is the same for the types of filters in which the single or multiple filtering members are arranged conoentrically around the inlet or outlet pipe of the fluid to be purified, which passes without changing direction from the filtration members to the point of use.
In all the devices known to date, @ the fluid to be purified passes through the filtering device at lower speeds, but nevertheless still too high or too unfavorable, or even under unfavorable conditions for other opinions. According to a known method, the air passes through the filtering device from the outer casing to the collecting and exhaust chamber arranged eono-vertically with respect to said casing; therefore, the air flow rate which at the beginning this low, and therefore favorable, increases as the fluid advances in the filtering device, reaches its value ma -

xima when leaving this device;
This increase in speed results in an increase in the energy of the gas current which inevitably causes on the internal edge of the filter u enrichment of this current in foreign particles which are entrained because of this increase.
The arrangement which is the subject of the present invention makes it possible to remedy this drawback. In accordance with the invention, the fluid to be purified is introduced into the filtrate chamber via a central pipe, and enters the wire cartridge itself, through a large number of openings. provided in said pipe, and extends in a fan to penetrate into this cartridge surrounding said pipe and

passes through the cartridge at a constantly decreasing speed The speed of exiting the outer wall i of the cartridge is approximately 1/50 of the speed inside the pipe a and 1 / l of the speed of entry into the inner envelope e. This arrangement guarantees the progressive purification. fluid passing through the device during its path between the inner wall and the outer wall of the. filtered.
This effect is still aooru du. that leaving the absorbent oouohe of the adsorbent, the fluid still passes through an envelope of firek or textile or the like, intended to collect the last impurities. the device arranged in this way has not only given proof of its value in ridding the aj or gases of dust and water or the like. but also to purify the vapors, in particular to rid them of water vapor or even liquids, condensation water, oil or other floating impurities. For this purpose, the filter card is surrounded by a bell-shaped envelope
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
going to around the. bottom of said cartridge and subdividing the space between the cartridge and the outer casing of the device.
Thanks to the low flow velocity of the. fluid under this bell, oil and other volatile impurities or. floats can rush on the bell, or. under it, at the surface of the. purified fluid, and then remain there, while the purified substance flows towards the evaouation pipe passing under the lower edge of the bell. This prevents with certainty that the oil possibly extracted by the steam in the filter cartridge can be washed away by the fluid to be purified, endowed with the purified substance in the filter in the discharge line.
The appended drawing represents, by way of non-limiting example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention, shown in vertical section.
The pipe connection a is mounted concentrically by its vertical part in the container b, and connected to the latter by means of a cover r in which the tubing is mounted by welding, threading or otherwise, so as to ensure the sealing. This tubing has a large number of orifices ± through which the fluid to be purified escapes.
The filter cartridge is arranged oonoentrically with respect to the tubing and consists of an inner casing e and an outer casing 1 made of perforated sheet metal, or any other suitable substance provided with perforations, preferably elongated, and arranged vertically; inside this cartridge is mounted a cylinder of felt or the like, or of sheet metal r, and an outer cylinder h also substantially appropriate. Inter-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The valley between these felt cylinders is filled with a filtering mass g, absorbent and / or absorbent, consisting for example of coke, of diatomaceous earth, of active carbon or the like.
At its upper part, the cartridge is closed by a cover m which is preferably metallic, to which the sheet metal cylinders e and u are fixed when these cylinders are not in one piece with the cover. At its lower part, the cartridge is closed by a filtering disc p, preferably of the same substance as the cylinders m and h; applied by a metal disc or any other suitable substance, held and locked by a screw fitted with a wing nut t, and mounted in the lower end of the tubing a.
The cover m is surmounted by a sealing washer n, made of rubber or the like, the upper edge of which bears on an adjustable ring o, of such. so that the locking of the wing nut t ensures the integrity of the cover m of the cartridge with respect to the tt bulure a so that the flow of fluid to be purified escaping through the cane orifices can pass through the cartridge to arrive in the container b and from the latter in the discharge line 1, completely eliminating any possibility of passage of unpurified partial streams.
In order to prevent the base pq from falling during the removal of the nut t, this base is held by means of a certain number of springs or the like t1, distributed around the periphery of the cylinder i, these springs preferably being 3 in number; the oouverole r is connected to the casing b by several screws to éorous s. The discharge line 1 is connected to the cover r in a manner analogous to that used for the supply line a.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The casing i of the cartridge is surrounded by a bell v, joined to the cover m by a sealed gasket, or made in one piece with this cover, and subdividing the space between the inner wall of the casing and the wall exterior of the cartridge into an interior space k1 and an exterior space k. The latter communicates with the discharge pipe 1, and the purified fluid can only reach this outlet k by passing under the lower edge of the bell, located roughly at the same level as the bottom of the cartridge.
When the apparatus is intended only for the cold purification of air, gas or the like, this bell v can be omitted.
During the purification of vapors, the possibly entrained oil precipitates on the internal wall of the bell v and drains into the bottom of the container b. There can be no entrainment of oil droplets by the steam escaping around the edge of the bell, since this steam has only a very low flow speed.
When purifying liquids, the oil or the like contained therein is retained in the bell v and accumulates on the surface, while the purified liquid flows around the lower edge of the bell v.
The valve n is used from time to time to draw off the deposited impurities.
After opening the housing b and removing the cartridge, the latter as well as the bell b can be cleaned without difficulty at any time.
