<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
I) on fait agir les gaz chauffants sur la matière en trai- tement, sur un chemin ou un circuit de chauffage de longueur régla- ble en vertu d'un prélèvement des gaz chauffants sur le chemin ou circuit de chauffage;
II) le prélèvement est effectué de manière, à ce que les quantités des gaz chauffants parcourant différentes sections suc- cessives du chemin ou du circuit de chauffage, soient variables l'une par rapport à l'autre, par un prélèvement réglable des gaz chauffants . différents points successifs du chemin ou circuit de chauffage ;
III) les gaz chauffants prélevés sur le chemin ou circuit de chauffage sont réintroduits dans ce dernier et ceci avantageusement de manière à Influencer la vitesse des gaz parcourant le chemin de chauffage, ou à une vitesse réglable, pour pouvoir varier de cette manière l'intensité du chauffage;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
e) afin d'obtenir un chauffage d'abord rapide et ensuite plus lent, jusqu'à obtention exacte du résultat voulu, les gaz chauffants sont conduits en équicourant avec la matière en trai- tement; f) les gaz chauffants sont admis dans le chemin ou circuit de chauffage, ou dans la chambre de combustion entourant le four, à un ou différents endroits de ce chemin ou circuit, ou de cette chambre;
VII) la propulsion,ou l'avancement, et l'agitation de la ma- tière en traitement sont rendues réglables au point de vue vitesse et intensité;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"PROCESS FOR THE REALIZATION OF AND INSTALLATIONS FOR THE HEAT TREATMENT OF MORE OR LESS FINALLY DIVIDED MATERIALS.
The present invention relates to a process for producing, and installations for, thermal treatment of coal, or other materials, more or less finely divided, or divided, particularly suitable when it comes to to reach, within the whole mass, a temperature narrowly defined and perfectly uniform.
The process and the installations in question are, in particular, especially suitable for the manufacture of globular coal with a view to its various applications, in accordance with Patent No. 360,870 of May 22, 1928 and its various improvement patents.
The essential object of the present invention is to subject the material to be treated to a regular progression, with continual agitation, along a path where it undergoes a rapid first heating, then slower, until obtaining of a time
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
exact and uniform desired temperature throughout the mass being treated, without, for example in the case of the manufacture of globular charcoal, the initial state of subdivision, more or less fine, of the mass being changed and transporting the mass thus prepared under the application of possible subsequent treatments at the place of its subsequent treatment, or of storage.
In accordance with this aim, the present method of carrying out the thermal treatment of coal, or of other materials, more or less finely divided, or divided, is carried out by indirect heating of these materials in mobile or stationary furnaces, for example. in rotary tube furnaces, or in vibratory motion furnaces, or the like, or in stationary furnaces fitted with a propellant-agitator device, - and it is characterized essentially by the following points considered together, or separately - fully, or in any suitable combination:
I) the heating gases are made to act on the material being treated, on a heating path or circuit of adjustable length by virtue of taking off the heating gases from the heating path or circuit;
II) the sampling is carried out in such a way that the quantities of the heating gases passing through different successive sections of the path or of the heating circuit are variable with respect to each other, by an adjustable sampling of the heating gases . different successive points of the path or heating circuit;
III) the heating gases taken from the heating path or circuit are reintroduced into the latter and this advantageously so as to influence the speed of the gases traveling the heating path, or at an adjustable speed, in order to be able to vary the intensity in this way heating;
IV) the flame, or flames, of the burning heating gases are diffused or distributed by suitable means so as to avoid temperature peaks and to obtain a uniform temperature of the heating gases; /
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
e) in order to obtain a first rapid and then slower heating, until the exact desired result is obtained, the heating gases are carried out equicurrent with the material being treated; f) the heating gases are admitted into the heating path or circuit, or into the combustion chamber surrounding the furnace, at one or more places of this path or circuit, or of this chamber;
VII) the propulsion, or advancement, and agitation of the material being treated are made adjustable from the point of view of speed and intensity;
VIII) the material leaving the furnace is transported, - with continual agitation and possible change in temperature, in an accelerated decreasing direction, as well as with the possible admixture of additional materials, - to the place of its subsequent treatment , for example, in the case of globular carbon, at the press, or at the treatment tanks with solvents, or at the carbon black production plant, - or at the place of storage. gasinage.
The installations used for carrying out the process according to the present invention therefore mainly include an oven of the species described above, furnished with adjustable means ensuring the progression with continuous stirring of the materials being treated, a uniform heating temperature, a adjustable heating and rapid and precise adjustment of the final temperature achieved, an unloading device capable of maintaining or carrying the material coming out of the oven, to a desired state, while transporting it to the place of its treatment later, or at another place of intended destination, - and, - in the case of treatment of coal, or other material yielding, during their treatment, combustible gases or vapors, or otherwise ulitisable,
- the means required for the recovery of these distillation gases or vapors, or in general of the by-products obtained in the heat treatment of the given starting material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The accompanying drawings show schematically, by way of nonlimiting examples, two types of installations used for carrying out the process according to the present invention, more especially suitable for the manufacture and treatment of globular carbon described in patent no.360870 and its various improvements.
FIG. 1 represents an overall view, with partial sections, in a rotary tube furnace installation.
FIG. 2 represents a longitudinal view, in partial section, of a so-called "vibro" furnace.
Figure 3 shows a cross section along a-a figure 2.
FIG. 4 shows a longitudinal section through a conveyor, mixer and cooler device placed after the furnace.
Figures 5 and 6 show details.
The rotary tube furnace installation according to FIG. 1 comprises the rotary tube 1, supported by means of two running belts 2,2 'on two pairs of carrier rollers 3,3'. In the arrangement shown, the rollers 3 'are themselves mounted on a movable frame 3 ", so as to be able to follow the expansion of the tube, but obviously any other equivalent arrangement could be similarly adopted, for example it would be sufficient to to give an extra width to the rollers 3 'The inner surface of the tube 1 is advantageously completely smooth, to the exclusion of all accessory parts, such as: sheets, deflectors, or the like, usually provided to stir the material under treatment.
The more or less finely divided charcoal is introduced into the tube 1 through a sealed cell distributor 10 fitted to the front head 9 of the furnace and leaves the latter in the globular state via a sta.nche cell distributor 10 'fitted to the furnace. the rear head of the oven. The heads 9 and 9 'are movable on rails.
The tube 1 is surrounded by the combustion chamber 1 ', of which
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the hearth 1 "is located on the side of the origin of the furnace, while on the side of the outlet of furnace 1 the combustion chamber is connected by a blurality of successive channels, individually adjustable and closable by valves or registers 7 , 7 ', 7 ", to the 1"' flue going towards the chimney.
It is obvious that by an appropriate adjustment of said valves it is possible to easily and precisely adjust the length of the or the paths of the heating gases along the tube 1, as well as the quantities of the heating gases.
EMI5.1
passing through the unit of the texiipq pa, Q xi <to <boeo, 1 # QQ \\\\ t1'U.Qn to the focus at the valve z, from that ai to the valve .7 * from that oi to valve 7 and so on, depending on the number of channels connecting the combustion chamber to the flue 1 "', and that because of this the heating can be easily and precisely regulated so as to obtain desired final temperatures.
In addition there is provided at one or more appropriate places of the oarneau 1 "', for example at 33, a withdrawal of the burnt gases, or more or less burnt gases, making it possible to reintroduce, for example by means of the fan 34 and the pipe 35, part of the heating gases taken from the combustion chamber 1 'in the latter, at the desired locations, for example, in the hearth 1 ", with the aim of a rational use of the calories of these gases and of an increase in the circulation speed of the heating gases along the tube 1, with a view to improving the heat transmission conditions.
In the flue 1 "'is disposed a recuperator 8, for example an air heater, connected by line 36 to a fan 37 and supplying, via the latter, hot air for all useful purposes, in particular for drying the treated material, for feeding the home, etc ': ..
A stack of refractory bricks 22 is placed in the hearth between the burners and the furnace proper. The purpose of this stacking is to stir the flame and only allow combustion gases at a uniform temperature to come into contact with the sheets; otherwise it would be 4 to fear that each burner does not produce in some
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
that a species of sting emerges that may cause local overheating in the sheets
As it follows from the above description, the heating gases and the materials being treated proceed according to the principle of equicurrent. This heating method firstly ensures rapid heating of the material as it enters the furnace, then more and more gradual heating until the exact desired temperature is obtained.
In fact, if we plot the temperatures of the gases and the material at the various locations of the furnace in a diagram, the difference, initially maximum, gradually decreases and more and more slowly towards the outside. end. In addition, the heating according to the principle of equicurants is especially suitable when it comes to reaching a final temperature relatively close to the permissible temperature for the sheets, because it causes the sheets to work in the best possible conditions. possible conditions, especially, when, as is the case with coal, the material to be treated is a poor conductor of heat.
Indeed, the hottest gases are in contact with a sheet on the other side of which there is a still cold material capable, therefore, of absorbing a significant amount of heat, while further away, when the material itself is at a relatively high temperature, or even at a temperature close to that admissible for the sheets, the heating gases are no longer themselves at an excessive temperature.
The heating is carried out by any suitable means, for example with gas, fuel oil, pulverized coal, etc. In FIG. 1, there is shown a supply of gas originating, on the one hand, from the distillation of coal. treated in the furnace and drawn from the latter by line 11, and, on the other hand, from a gasifier 13 supplying, if necessary, make-up gas.
The gases from both sources are fed to any suitable mixer, for example such as 12, (see fig. 5). This m-
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
langeur comprises a series of perforated tubes 12 ', in which the gases from the two sources meet and mix to finally exit in the supply line 14 of the furnace.
The heating can also be regulated by means of auxiliary burners 6 and 6 ', arranged towards the outlet end of the combustion chamber and making it possible to raise, if necessary, the temperature at this point.
The tube 1 is driven by a toothed ring 4, resiliently wedged on the furnace, and with the interposition of a speed change 5, making it possible to perform the rotation at the desired speed. The role of this device is particularly important when starting and stopping the furnace, because it allows at these times to adapt more exactly the flow rates to the temperature conditions achieved, different from those which prevail during operation. keep on going. By this means, more or less waste is avoided when starting and stopping.
These various devices give a great latitude and a great flexibility in the operation of the furnace and the regulation of the temperatures, at the same time as the possibility of varying the rate appreciably in a very short time.
The globular carbon is generally found at the end of the furnace at a temperature such that it cannot be fed directly to the agglomeration press. In fact, in the feed hopper of the press, this coal would not be kept sufficiently in motion to prevent its setting into a sticky paste which interferes with the operation of the devices, where the release of gas would also be inconvenient for the agglomeration. . It is therefore necessary either to let it cool down somewhat, or to add a cartaine 'quantity of dry charcoal at a lower temperature, as provided for in the improvement patent no. 399.159 of October 14, 1933.
With these facts in mind, the hot globular carbon passes from the cell distributor 10 'into a mixer and cooler conveyor 15 (see Figures 4 and 6) in which it is cooled.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
at the temperature desired for the agglomeration, while being continuously stirred to prevent caking. For this purpose, the apparatus 15 essentially comprises an envelope 38, inside which turn in opposite directions two shafts 39, 40 with vanes 41 which ensure slow progress and stirring. continual matter. The casing 38 may advantageously itself be surrounded by a jacket of cooling water 42 making it possible to speed up the operation.
A series of evacuation tubes 15 :, 15 ", 15" ', provided with registers 43 / allow the material to be evacuated after a more or less long stay in the cooler.
These discharge tubes discharge the material onto a rapidly translating conveyor 16 which conveys it with a minimum of subsequent temperature difference to the sinter presses 17 or, where appropriate, to other apparatus of use.
The mixer and cooler conveyor 15 is connected to the distributor with cells 10 ′, advantageously of inanially ethanol by means of a camel 44, fitted with a chimney 45 for ventilation or for the extraction of the gases given off by the discharged product.
In the event that the materials coming from the mixing and cooling conveyor 15 on the conveyor 16 still give off troublesome gases or worthy of recovery, the conveyor 16 can also be enclosed in a sheath 46 connected in a sealed manner on the one hand to the evacuation tubes 15 ', 15 ", 15"', and on the other hand to the press 17.
In accordance with FIG. 6, the mixer and cooler conveyor 15 may have alongside the discharge tubes 15 ', 15 ", 15"', additional discharge tubes, such as for example 47, as well as folding track 48.49. By virtue of this arrangement, the material passing through the apparatus 15 can be discharged from the latter as desired, either by one of the tubes 15 ', 15 ", 15"', going to the press, or by one or more tubes 47 ,,. going to other devices or places, either simultaneously through one of the tubes 15 '15 ", 15"' and through some of the tubes 47.

The stirring and advancement of the charcoal in the furnace are carried out by the action of rotation and inclination of the tube 1 without any crushing of the globules which form there under the effect of the precisely adjustable and controllable temperature. Likewise, the globular charcoal leaving the furnace is conveyed to the press, or to the desired destination, in exactly the necessary state desired for its agglomeration, at its desired further processing.
Figures 2 and 3 show an example of a vibrating hearth furnace, capable of being substituted for the tube, rotary 1 in the installation shown in fig.I. In this alternative embodiment of the invention, the material to be treated, for example the coal to be brought to the globular state, passes through a kind of slightly inclined muffle 20, arranged inside a combustion chamber. 21 and resiliently supported by means of tabs 32 ′ by springs 27 arranged outside the combustion chamber. This muffle 20 itself carries a series of raised bearings 28 also arranged outside the combustion chamber.
In these bearings 28 rotates at an appropriate speed, advantageously adjustable, an axis 29, provided with pulleys or unbalanced flywheels 30 advantageously interchangeable, which prints to all the bearing supports 28, and through them to the block 20, a regular vibratory movement: The magnitude of the unbalance of the flywheels 30 and the speed of the axis 29 depend on the amplitude and frequency of this vibratory movement.
The charcoal is introduced into the muffle by a sealed distributor 23, for example a 4-cell distributor and it is extracted therefrom in the same way by another distributor 31.
The distillation gases are removed from the muffle through a pipe 11.
The combustion chamber 21 is heated as in the case of the rotary kiln described above, Its hearth with stacking of refractory bricks 22 is arranged on the side where the material to be treated 23 arrives in the muffle 20, while its part located

the side of the outlet 31 of the treated material, is connected by a plurality of successive channels and individually adjustable and closable by valves 24, 24 ', 24 ", to the flue 21' going to the chimney 25, and containing suitable recuperators 26.
Likewise, the flue 21 'is connected by a return line 33, 34, 35 to the combustion chamber 21.
The tabs 32 which support the muffle, as well as the uprights of the bearings 28, must obviously pass through the walls of the combustion chamber with sufficient play. The inflows of air produced by these clearances are, however, without disadvantage; moreover, the places in question can easily be closed by means of any suitable devices, such as for example: hydraulic seals, flexible packing or the like, ensuring a suitable seal.
The material, more or less finely divided, entering through the sealed distributor 23 into the muffle 20, advances in the latter towards the outlet 31, with continual agitation of its constituent particles relative to one another, by virtue of the vibratory movement. imprinted on the muffle and on the inclination of the latter, the speed of advance of the material and the intensity of its agitation being adjustable by adjusting the speed of rotation of the shaft 39 and by the suitable choice of unbalance of pulleys or flywheels 30.
The foregoing description makes it possible to clearly see the great flexibility of the installations which are the subject of the present invention. We have seen, in fact, that individual adjustments are provided for the heating, the circulation of the combustion gases, the metering of the feed gases, for the rate of rotation or vibration of the furnace on which the furnace mainly depends. flow rate, and for partial cooling or the subsequent and imposed change of the temperature of the material before it is brought to the devices for use, etc ...
The installation thus lends itself with the greatest ease to the treatment of materials of relatively variable properties.

with a production that is very easy to modify.
It is obvious that the method and the installations according to the present invention lend themselves to a multitude of variant embodiments without departing from the invention itself.
Thus, for example, the process, instead of being made up of all the measures listed and described above, may consist of only a few of these measures with the exclusion of others. It is the same for the installations. In addition, instead of using combustion gases burnt in the combustion chamber of the furnace itself one can only use hot gases from another source, or even air or steam, for example. overheated, depending on the nature of the materials to which the process and the installations used to carry it out are applied.
Likewise, the measurements making up the process according to the invention and the means serving to carry them out can be applied even to materials treated by direct heating and according to the principle of countercurrents.
