<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"DEVICE FOR STARTING VALVE SWITCHED ENGINES"
It is known that the collector of motors with collector for direct current or alternating current can be replaced by discharge devices with polarized grids which are controlled in such a way that they perform the function of a collector by connecting in the desired order, like a collector, the network supplying the current in the different winding sections of the motor's working winding. For such valve-commutated engines, it is not only possible to use separate valves having
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
each has a cathode and an anode in front of which is a polarized grid, but also discharge devices with several anodes.
This latter arrangement simplifies the control and allows the use of mercury vapor rectifiers with polarized grids with one cathode and several anodes.
On the other hand, it leads, however, to a poorer use of the copper of the motor windings, since each winding is traversed by the current only for a fraction of a period. This misuse of the windings is felt in certain circumstances, mainly in traction and hoisting motors, by the fact that, when starting these motors, the various windings must withstand very considerable overloads and that It is therefore necessary to plan their dimensions accordingly.
This is due to the fact that at the start of starting, only one and the same winding is traversed for several consecutive seconds by the total nominal current of the motor, until the rotor of said motor has rotated by a certain amount. angle and therefore the next section of the work winding is energized. This results in an overload of several times 100% for several seconds, which in certain circumstances can damage the insulation of the windings. The same applies in principle not only to the winding sections of the engine, but also to the anodes of the control valve. Such overloads produce fusions, deformations on the anodes and, in the anode circuit, overvoltages; they can therefore cause serious disturbances.
These drawbacks must be mitigated according to the present invention because, at start-up, one section of the motor and its corresponding anode is no longer the only one to support the current, but that two or more sections are simultaneously in parallel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The object of the present invention therefore consists of a device for starting DC or AC motors with switching by valves, the working winding of which is connected in a star, the neutral point of this winding being connected to the DC network. 'power supply directly or via absorption coils, and a contact device being provided for the polarization of the valve grids, characterized in that on the contact device is arranged, in plus the main brushes operating in normal service, at least one more auxiliary brush which means that at the start of starting at least two neighboring phases of each polyphase system of the working winding are simultaneously traversed by the current.
This distribution of the working current over several phases in parallel with the working winding is only possible and necessary as long as the motor is in the starting period. As soon as the motor has reached a certain speed, the voltages induced in the motor by the rotation of the rotor have the effect that in principle, when the motor operates without an absorption coil, only one winding phase of each winding polyphase can be traversed by current.
This fact is due to the fact that, between the successive phases of the same polyphase winding, there are voltage differences which prevent the simultaneous operation of several winding phases. The simultaneous operation of several winding phases can be obtained during starting by taking special measures in the adjustment device by polarized grids placed in front of the anodes. These measures consist in simultaneously maintaining positive at least two adjustment grids which follow one another in the order of the phases, but only
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
as long as the engine is in the starting period.
In the drawing, an exemplary embodiment of the invention has been shown schematically.
A and B are two polyphase windings of a valve-commutated motor, and whose neutral points are connected to the outer conductors of the single-phase transformer T. The ends of the two six-phase systems of the motor working winding are connected to the anodes a1 to a6 and b1 to b 6 of the control valve V whose cathode is connected to the midpoint of the single-phase transformer T.
The continuous caurant which leaves the cathode of the valve V passes through the rings E1, E2 and the field winding F in the rotor, to reach the midpoint of the secondary winding of the transformer T .. * The anode grids are controlled using a K contact device, the brushes of which are driven by the adjusted motor shaft, while the contact blades are fixed and arranged so that they can be moved one step further. any desired angle.
When the motor is not running, only the contack blade k3 is brought, in the position shown in the drawing, to a positive potential by the grid current source C and by means of the brush c3 so that it is not traversed by the current, during a half-wave of the single-phase supply current, that only the winding phase a2 and during the other half-wave, that only the winding phase b2. But according to the invention, at least two neighboring plates, and in the present example even three neighboring plates, are positively charged at the same time. For this purpose, the contact device K is provided with two auxiliary brushes c1 and c2.
Each of the three brushes touches a contact blade k2, k3, k4.
In this way, the winding phases P1, P2, P3, P12, P13 and P14 of the working winding are traversed simultaneously ...
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by the current, so that each of the winding phases is relieved accordingly and its heating is thus brought back to approximately the normal value. The auxiliary brushes c1 and c2 can be started up automatically as a function of the voltage at the motor terminals using a relay D to which this voltage is brought to the terminals and which interrupts the supply to the auxiliary brushes. from a certain tension. The auxiliary brushes can also be switched on automatically depending on the speed of the motor.
These auxiliary brushes c1 etc2 can be arranged symmetrically with respect to the main brush c3 or, on the contrary, if we want the starting torque to be as strong and constant as possible, we can place them behind the main brush in the direction of motor rotation. It is also possible, by suitably choosing the value of the angle between the brushes, to ensure that, in substantially equal time intervals, alternately n and (n + 1) anodes operate simultaneously during starting, which decreases even more the pulsation of the starting torque.
