Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

    @

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Aseptic arrangement of medical catgut wire.

   Catgut wire used in surgery is usually wound on a glass rod and enclosed with it in a sealed glass tube, filled with alcohol, which is broken at the time of use to extract the coil and unwind the thread sanitized by alcohol. But if the asepsis of the operating field or of the surgeon's hands is imperfect, the wire can become infected on contact when it is no longer protected by the tube or sanitized by alcohol, the catgut of which does not retain a quantity sufficient. The present invention relates to an arrangement of the surgical catgut wire which avoids the danger of infection under these circumstances.

   According to the invention, the wire is wound in such a way that it passes through, inside the coil,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 a swab soaked in alcohol or other suitable disinfectant which re-sanitizes the thread as it passes if it becomes infected. In addition, the spool of thread can be housed in a protective tube provided with a constriction which, when the tube is broken at the constricted location, retains the spool inside the tube, in aseptic environment, during unwinding. some thread. Preferably, the constriction has a width sufficient to allow the spout of the spool to protrude from the broken tube, through which the wire is guided to prevent it from being cut on the cutting edge of the tube.

   If the aseptic conditions are satisfactory enough, instead of breaking the tube at the constriction and holding the tube cap containing the spool in his hand as he unwinds the wire, the operator can break the tube from the spool. on the side opposite to the constriction, extract the coil and hold it directly in your hand in the usual way. In this case, we still have the advantage that the thread, after having been in contact with the hand holding the spool, passes through the sanitizing pad inside the spool before being used for sewing, ligature or other intervention. .

   The description of the appended drawing, which shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention, will make it clear how it can be implemented.

   Fig. 1 shows the spool of catgut wire in the sealed protective tube.

   Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section of the coil alone.

   Fig. 3 shows the protective tube broken in the constriction, and
Fig. 4 shows the coil extracted from the broken tube on the side opposite the constriction.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

The catgut wire 1 is wound on the spool 2 constituted by a glass tube open and lapped at both ends, one end of which is tapered to form a beak 3. The free end of the wire, after having been folded back under the winding in a loop 1a to prevent it from unwinding inadvertently, is led inside the reel 2 in 1b, passes through a cotton ball 4 contained in the reel and exits in 1c through the tapered beak 3.

   5 designates the protective glass tube provided at one end with a pinched constriction 6, and fire-sealed at its other end 7 after the coil 2 has been introduced through this end with alcohol in sufficient quantity to bathe the spool, and a cotton ball 8. This prevents the sloshing of the spool, the spout 3 of which is shoulder against the throttle 6 in which it is engaged.

   Fig. 3 shows that when the tube 5 is broken at the location of the constriction 6 and the free end 1c of the catgut wire 1 is pulled, for example by holding the tube 5 with one hand and pulling the wire by means of pliers, the remaining part of the constriction prevents the spool 2 from coming out of the protective tube, but allows the nozzle 3 to protrude. The traction exerted on the wire loosens the loop 1a, the wound part 1 of the wire is unwinds and, passing inside the reel, passes through the buffer 4 before exiting through the spout 3 which guides it to beyond the broken edge of the constriction 6.

   The wire therefore unwinds away from contact with the hand which holds the tube 5 and retains its aseptic quality until it leaves the spout 3. It cannot get caught between the tube 5 and the coil 2 since pass inside it, nor cut itself on the broken edge of the constriction 6.

    @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

In the case of FIG. 4, the tube 5 was broken on the side of the sealed end 7, at the location of the notch 9 provided for this purpose, and the entire coil 2 was extracted from the tube to use it in the same way usual by holding it directly in your hand. However, the danger of infection is avoided or greatly reduced by the fact that the tampon 4, which remains soaked in alcohol absorbed in the tube 5, re-sanitizes the thread passing through it when unwinding it by pulling it from the nozzle 3.

   Of course, the invention is not limited to the details of execution described and shown by way of example and it would not be outside its scope to modify them.
