<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Improvements to electric capacitors *
The present invention relates to improvements in variable capacitance electric capacitors, and relates primarily to capacitors for use in T.S.F. receiving apparatus.
According to the invention, there is provided an electric capacitor with variable capacity comprising two: telescopic jigs or fitting one into the other in another way (for example tubes) made.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of insulating material and adjustable relative to each other, and at least two electrodes, one of which is mounted on each of the jigs.
The electrodes are preferably formed from very thin, self-supporting sheets of metal, metallized paper or the like, and advantageously at least one of the electrodes may have a flanged end overhanging the end. of the template to form a shorting contact with the other electrode.
Further, according to the invention, at least one of the electrodes may have a tapered shape and be disposed with the portion having the smallest dimension closest to the other electrode in the position occupied by the jigs to obtain the minimum capacity. The capacitor thus has a low minimum capacity, and the setting of the templates produces a gradual change in capacitance which is not strictly proportional to the setting of the templates.
In one form of specific construction according to the invention, an electric capacitor is produced as specified above, comprising two tubular jigs (one of which can slide in the other), an electrode supported on the surface in - Third of the larger template, the other electrode being wound around the outer surface of the smaller template, and an insulating layer between the two electrodes.
In this construction, each electrode may advantageously have a folded tab and a metal terminal-holder cap is force-fitted onto the support tube, in contact with said tab.
,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Further, a tie is preferably provided between the two jigs and is tightened under the end cap to prevent complete separation of the jigs.
A specific form of construction of a capacitor according to the invention is shown by way of example in the drawing. annexed, where:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the capacitor in the minimum oapaoity position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the setting for obtaining the normally maximum capacity.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the electrodes.
Referring to the drawing, in which the same reference numbers designate similar parts, it can be seen that the capacitor comprises two tubular jigs 10 and 11, made of insulating material, the jig 11 having a smaller diameter and being slidably mounted, at the bottom. like a telescope tube, in the other jig 10. Attached to the inner surface of jig 10 is an electrode 12 made of a very thin sheet of metal, metallized paper, or the like. This electrode is made with the aid of a rectangular sheet which is given a cylindrical shape inside the jig, and said electrode is folded outwardly over the end of the jig to form a collar, as indicated in 13.
At its other end, the electrode has a tab 14 enabling an electrical connection to be made. This tab is folded back.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
on the outside face of the jig 10 and is tightened using a terminal holder end cap 15 which is forcibly engaged on the jig 10. One end of a strip of insulating material 16 is also clamped between this hat and template. A terminal 17 is mounted on the end cap 15.
The smaller sized jig 11 has an electrode 18 made of a very thin sheet of metal, metallized paper, or the like and wrapped around the outer surface of the jig 11.
This electrode is formed using a trapezoidal shaped sheet having a tapered side 28 starting at one end of the jig. At the other end of the jig, the electrode has a connection tab 19.
The electrode 18 is covered with an insulating envelope 20, such as an adhesive fabric impregnated with an insulating material, and the connection tab 19 of the electrode is folded over the outer face of this envelope. A terminal holder cap 21, similar to the cap 15 of the other electrode, fits onto the end of the jig 11, over the casing 20, and is forcibly engaged on the covered jig 11 and in contact. electrically with the tab 19, the other end of the band 16 is also clamped under the hat 21, and a terminal 22 is mounted on the end cap 21.
The length of the strip 16 is such that in the deployed position for adjusting the two jigs to obtain the minimum capacity. as indicated
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
fig.1, the band 16 is completely stretched to prevent the complete separation of. two ga- barits. -To increase the capacitance of the capacitor, the template 11 is more or less returned to the template 10, so that to obtain the maximum capacity. the templates will occupy the relative position shown in fig. 2. When the jigs are tucked into each other the maximum amount, the flange 13 of the electrode 12 comes into contact with the cap 21, so as to provide a direct metallic connection in this position.
By giving the electrode 18 a tapered shape, the minimum capacitance of the capacitor is not only reduced to a low value, but, moreover, the increase in capacitance is not directly proportional to the overlap of the templates, but increases more gradually for adjustments made from the minimum position, at least for the lower part of the capacitor oapaoity range
It will be understood that the conformation of electrode 18, or electrode 12, or both, may be such as to provide any desired relationship between the capacity of the capacitor and the overlap of the electrodes.
It is preferable that the inner jig 10, as well as its electrode and the outer casing. slip into the other electrode 12 with slight friction, so that when the capacitor is set it is held in this position

settled. The capacitor constitutes a connecting element in the circuit or apparatus in which it is employed, in the sense that its only mechanical support is constituted by its electrical connections with the circuit or apparatus, using terminals 17 and 22.
The capacitor according to the invention is particularly intended for use in T.S.F. , in order to be connected in series between the antenna and the input element of the device and to serve as a means for adjusting the selectivity of the device and also as a means for adjusting the volume of. sound waves emitted by the receiving device. In addition, the capacitor can be used as an input tube. It lends an antenna and constitutes a capacitor coupling which can be set, or a direct metal connection.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment described above ;: for example, one or more additional electrodes can be provided on a jig disposed inside the jig 11, and this jig additional can also be set as a. telescopa tube In addition, instead of a single electrode on the external jig, two electrodes can be provided in order to constitute a differential capacitor
