<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Dans l'emploi d'un combustible gazeux pauvre, on constate donc une augmentation considérable du rendement quand on augmente la pression de combustion, Un autre avantage parti- culier du présent procède réside dans le fait que le démarrage du moteur peut être effectué avec du gaz à haute pression au lieu de l'air comprimé. Lans ce cas, la quantité nécessaire de gaz peut être produite avec moins de frais que la quantité correspondante d'air comprimé, étant donné que l'énergie néces- saire pour la production du gaz n'est qu'environ 45% de celle demandée pour la compression de l'air;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Premier exemple : GENERATEUR DE GAZ .-
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Process for the gasification of solid fuels under very high pressures and use of the gases thus produced in internal combustion engines The object of the present invention is a process and a device for the production of inexpensive energy using solid fuels. The process is characterized in that a lean and inexpensive water-added gas is produced directly at very high pressure and the gases so produced are used to power a diesel engine.
It is known that the use of gasified fuels at ordinary pressure for the supply of diesel engines is not economical because of the high content of the gaseous fuel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
into neutral gases (nitrogen) and as a result of the excessive energy required to compress the gaseous fuel before it is introduced into the cylinder.
Now, the inventor has found that it is possible to obtain, from a solid fuel directly, a gaseous fuel at a very high pressure, the cost of which is only slightly above the price of solid fuel. , but which has great advantages in its use as fuel used to power an engine.
This object is achieved by using a high pressure generator which can withstand normal internal pressure up to 300 atm. By fine-tuning the blown air and steam, taking into account the composition of the gas and the thermal balance, a gas containing a small proportion (30-40%) of gas can be produced directly under high pressure. combustible constituents, therefore having reduced heat output, and which at the same time contain up to 85% of the amount of energy contained in the original solid fuel.
The energy consumption necessary to keep the generator in service (inaction of air, etc.) per unit of energy produced is roughly equivalent to the energy required for the injection of air using a compressor, in an ordinary diesel engine running on oil.
It is only following the application of the process according to the present invention that it becomes economical to use lean, that is to say inexpensive, gases to fuel internal combustion engines. , and that it is precisely the lean gases, the application of which presents particular advantages in relation to the efficiency and the power of the cycle,
The inventor has found that in the first place a much higher cycle efficiency can be obtained by adopting such a gas instead of oil and this is due to the fact that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
gas is not only a fuel but also an expanding agent and that the weight of the gases providing the work is much greater than that of the conventional cycle.
Therefore an additional amount of heat is transformed into energy which amounts to 25-30%.
Secondly, a much higher power can be obtained than that of the conventional cycle with the same engine because the high proportion of neutral gases allows a much greater quantity of heat to be developed in the cylinder, without the temperature. combustion pressure and pressure reach abnormal values. The cylinder becomes overloaded with the fuel itself and consequently a machine power 2 1/2 times greater than that of machines working according to the conventional process could be achieved.
In the case of oil engines, the increase in pressure is not accompanied !? by a significant increase in cycle efficiency. The question arises differently in the case of a process using a gas at high pressure, due to the action of strongly compressed neutral gases, the influence of which is increases with increasing pressure in the cylinder.
In the use of a lean gaseous fuel, there is therefore a considerable increase in efficiency when the combustion pressure is increased. Another particular advantage of the present procedure is that the engine can be started with fuel. high pressure gas instead of compressed air. In this case, the required quantity of gas can be produced with less expense than the corresponding quantity of compressed air, since the energy required for the production of the gas is only about 45% of that required. for air compression;
in addition, the exhaust gas can be collected in a low pressure tank and used for heating
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The method according to the invention is applicable both to stationary energy-producing installations and to ships or locomotives. In the latter case, it is not necessary to transport the gas generator, as it can be produced in stationary installations and loaded into suitable pressurized gas receptacles placed on the tender. The large capacity of the motor to work under overload is particularly advantageous in this case.
The high pressure gas obtained by the present process can also be used in a gas turbine, if this is constructed to withstand high temperatures.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the examples and calculations below (below.
First example: GAS GENERATOR .-
The high pressure gas generator, shown in the drawing, comprises a vessel 1 with an upper extension 3 and an ash collector 5. These parts are made of steel and capable of withstanding an internal working pressure of 225 atm. The container 1 is lined internally with refractory material 2 and consists of two main parts.
The lower part 6 constitutes the combustion chamber and is at a temperature above 1000 C.
The upper part 7 constitutes a heat exchanger, where the hot gasification products give up their heat to the fuel and to the water which flow in countercurrent towards the combustion chamber. A pump 10 supplies water at a pressure of 225 atm. This water is then heated to a temperature close to its critical point in the coil 4. In this way, the water can be transformed into steam in a coil, thus avoiding the use of a special boiler. When the water reaches a temperature close to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
critical erature, it is conducted through tube 11 to a coil 9, housed between the refractory layer and the steel wall of the container, and then returns to the heat exchanger 8 through tube 12.
Part of the lost heat is thus recovered and excessive heating of the steel jacket is avoided.
The superheated steam enters the combustion chamber 6 via the tubes 13.
The appliance is loaded with fuel (coke with a grain size of 1 to 5mm depending on the dimensions of the appliance) is automatic and adjustablea The fuel is first loaded into a tank 3, placed above the generator and communicating with the combustion chamber by the tube 14 closed by the piston 15 which fits tightly in the upper part of the tube. After having closed the tank hermetically at 16, it is put under pressure by connecting it with the high pressure gas line by opening the valve 18. The generator is then loaded continuously by the movement of the piston, actuated by the device 19. , which only needs to lower the fuel and has no pressure to overcome, since both chambers are at the same pressure.
For greater safety, a differential pressure gauge 20 has been provided which indicates any possible rise in pressure in the piston. The loading speed can be adjusted by varying the stroke or the speed of the piston.
When the fuel tank is empty, the piston is fixed in the charging tube, thus cutting off communication with the combustion chamber. The gas contained in the fuel tank is then discharged into the gas line 17 using high pressure water supplied by the pump 21.
When the tank is full of water, taps 18 and 22 are closed and the tank can be opened and recharged. 27 is an air compressor which sends compressed air into the combustion chamber through coil 28.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The ash is discharged by opening a ball valve 23, located at the bottom of the combustion chamber, after the hydraulic pressure on the other side of the valve in the vessel 5, has been made equal to the internal pressure, through the opening of the valve 24. The ash is then pushed into the lower ash container 5 with the help of the pressurized water which is taken from the ash container, passed through a. filter 25 under the action of a circulation pump 26 and is introduced into the lower part of the combustion chamber. When the tank 5 is full of ash the ball valve. 23 is closed and the tank 5 can be emptied and refilled with pressurized water to be ready for the next evacuation.
The gas produced is stored in the steel cylinders 29.

The maximum affective combustion temperature (assuming the loss in cooling water according to Seiliger equal to 18% of the heat load) is 1730 abs.
Suppose the maximum combustion pressure is 55 at abs, we obtain.
Exhaust gas pressure: 5 at abs.
Exhaust gas temperature: 1050 abs.
Thermal efficiency, 50.4%
Average indicated pressure, 14.85 atm.abs.
Effective yield: 47.7%
Mean effective pressure, 13.5 at abs.
Efficiency relative to the original solid fuel:
38.7%
Specific power in CV eff. per liter of displacement (at 120 r.p.m.) = 2.25
The high efficiency of the use of coal and the high specific power (average pressure), compared with the conventional Diesel process, are mainly explained by the increase in weight of the engine gas, as the ratio of this gas to the air aspirated is 1.444: 0.848 = 1.7.

In this example the pressure of the discharge gases is admitted as lost. By using a compound engine with a low pressure cylinder the above data can be further improved. The efficiency of the solid fuel (minus the energy consumed by the process itself) rises above 40%, a value that cannot be achieved by any other method of energy generation.
Engine power can be further increased by adopting higher maximum charging pressures and using the ordinary supercharging process. As a result, the power can be increased in this manner to become more than four times that of the conventional method.
