<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY "IMPROVEMENT IN SURGE PROTECTORS"
The present invention relates to improvements to lightning arresters intended to protect indoor electrical installations and thereby subscribers against the harmful effects of lightning or dangerous overvoltages of any origin attributable to the connection of the installation to the low network. voltage.
This perfected surge arrester is more particularly RECOMMENDED for subscribers in rural areas, areas in which the above misdeeds are of a much greater frequency and violence even because of the sometimes exaggerated length of low voltage networks or proximity
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
high and low voltage lines,
Many more or less efficient devices have been proposed, but in general they all present either disadvantages for the sector during their operation, or dangers for the subscriber when they are put back into service.
The surge arrester, object of the present invention, overcomes these drawbacks.
Although this surge arrester works as efficiently indoors as it does outdoors, its mounting is more appropriate outdoors. It is, in this case, inserted in the branch ..... oh yes of the subscriber and before the entry. The entire interior installation is thus protected, including the meter, a device which would obviously no longer be so with the surge arrester connected after it.
Improvements to lightning arresters of the kind in which the various elements are mounted on a support arranged inside a protective bell-shaped enclosure which serves to fix the assembly, are characterized in that all the connections with the power supply line are established on the bell while all the protective elements, liable to deterioration and such as fuses, oardews or their equivalents, are mounted on a removable block which is provided with contacts arranged to be put into operation. ,
taken with the connections of the bell when the block is introduced into it and any connection with the external line being broken by the extraction of the block.
The invention also extends to various embodiments and in particular to the following points applicable separately or in all combinations t a) the bell carried an axial rod on which is engaged the removable perforated bloo, locking means

a variant of the device can be constituted with the above protection members to which are added a spark gap or a voltage limiter and an additional choke.
The protection devices are in this case installed in the following order: spark gap; choke coil, fuse, oardew, choke coil.
Another variant of the device for regions subject to particularly violent lightning strikes, consists in mounting the spark gap on the outside, on the part. fixed. that is, between the input terminals and the earth terminal.
Likewise, we can add to the surge arrester with on the spark gap, either / the moving part, or on the fixed part, a coil allowing the arc blowing, or insert between insulator and earth an inductive resistance or not.
It is also possible to mount on the mobile part other protection devices or circuit breakers, those born. ceasing an after-operation check being, in principle, mounted on the moving part, and the others being able to be mounted on the fixed part.
The surge arrester represented by FIGS. 2 and which is biepolar comprises the main elements indicated in the first embodiment, these elements bearing the same reference numbers.
This surge arrester consists of a casing 1 mounted as shown on a fitting 1 The casing carries, at its upper part, four holes in which porcelain entries 30 are sealed.
The two incoming wires 4 of the connection and the de = line 10 of the output of the device are fixed inside the casing under the contacts 5 and 9 screwed into said casing by entering through the porcelain terminals 30
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
sealed directly in the corresponding recesses of the housing.
The latter also carries in its center a threaded rod 6 on which is fixed the fixing carrara 12. The lower part of this threaded rod is constituted by a cylindrical part provided with a pin on which is hooked the. female part of a bacon 31 being integral with the handle 19 of the movable part via the rod 32.
The housing also carries a threaded bolt 33 to which are fixed on the one hand the fixing bracket 1a and the earth wire 7.
The movable part consists of two insulating plates 13 and 14 and four wafers 15 rennied between them by the spacers 34, This movable part is fixed to the fixed part of the casing by the bayonet assembly 31 mounted on the central rod 32 operated by the insulating handle 19 ,,
A spring 35 resting on the one hand on a part 36 and on the other hand on the insulating hand guard 9a ensures the pressure of the contacts of the mobile part on those of the fixed part.
On the insulating plate 13 are mounted two threaded rods 20, the GARDY type fuses 22, vacuum arresters type PHILIPS 37, the threaded rod 38 and the two piston oontaota 39.
On the insulating material supports 15 are wound the conductive wires of the coil 26 (flat wire, round ... insulated).
The device being thus interposed in the connection, the low voltage current used by the subscriber enters the device and arrives at the isolated contact 5, passes through the threaded rod 20 to reach a: coil and ravier at
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
fuse 22 which it passes through to then go to an inductor recess still via the spacers to finally return to a piston contact 39 and go to the subscriber via the isolated oontaot 9 and the input wire 10 ,
The electrode of the vacuum surge arrester 37 is connected to the output of the fuse $ that is to say to the input of the choke,
Otter electrode communicates with the ground wire by the intermediary of rods 33 and 38.
When an overvoltage due to a melt occurs on any one of the phases of the connection, the wave entered the apparatus through contact 5 and must
Port cross a choke to arrive at fuse 22, if the first choke does not completely stop the overvoltage, the latter being stopped again by the second choke connected after the fuse can go to the subscriber and therefore s 'drain to earth through the vacuum surge arrester 37,
The vacuum surge arrester 37 can include at its lower part a comb allowing high intensities to pass directly to earth.
In case of overvoltage due to accidental contact between high and low voltage, the wave follows the same path.
The operation of the surge arrester, which can be adjusted for a voltage very close to that of the distribution, leads for large currents, the fuses to melt, and the entire installation is completely isolated from the connection and without any disturbance whatsoever. for the sector,
The melting of the fuses obviously leads to the loss of current to the subscriber, which indicates to him that the surge arrester has operated.
To allow the surge arrester in its original state. the subscriber only has to pull the moving part by the handle and then change the fuses, a repair that he can do in complete safety and inside his house for example.
The same variants as in the first embodiment can be envisaged ....
