<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Process for the preparation of metallic alloys and especially titan alloys, chromium alloys, tungsten alloys and the like".
Alloys with titan, chromium, tungsten and the like in general have heretofore been obtained by the electro-thermal reduction of their ores in the presence of excess carbon.
By carrying out, on the contrary, this reduction with reducing agents such as Silicon, Aluminum, Magnesium, Calcium with simultaneous action, it is possible to directly obtain alloys having the desired quantities of carbon and which do not contain not the metals used for reduction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is precisely a simple and novel process making it possible to obtain alloys with titan, chromium, tunstene and the like having desired carbon contents.
This process is based on the following points
1) When in a molten metal mass formed by
EMI2.1
Per-Carbon-Bilicium-Aluminum-Magnesium and Calcium at the desired titers a mixture is added containing the oxide or oxides of the metals which must enter the alloy, for example ores containing the oxides of Titan, of Iron, Chromium, Tungsten and the like, and suitable fluxes so that the reducing compounds (oxide or oxides) of one or more metals are in excess of the chemically equivalent amounts of the reducing agents constituting the molten metal mass , and when the aforesaid mixture has been brought to a sufficient temperature in order to render it molten and fluid, the reduction reaction takes place with passage of the reduced metals into the metal mass itself.
The reaction is exothermic with the formation of an ever more fluid and less oxidizing slag, ie exhausted with respect to the oxide or reducible metal oxides.
II) The metallic mass delivered from the floating slag fluid is reacted with a new mixture as in point 1) until the desired metal titers are obtained in the metallic mass.
III) The object of the invention is also to obtain metal alloys which do not contain the metals or metalloids used for the reduction, when a mixture is used which can give rise to the formation of an oxidizing slag. and fluid at a relatively low temperature (1300 degrees).
The process can be carried out in any furnace of any type provided that it is capable of maintaining the necessary materials in complete fusion during the entire operation.

An electric furnace with electrodes serves the purpose.
Practically, by way of example, an alloy according to the invention can be obtained as follows:
We charge an electric furnace with 1000 kilos of cast iron, steel, or soft iron depending on the desired carbon content, and the furnace is brought to the melting temperature. When all the metal is melted we add 200 Kilos of Iron-Silicon (Silicon in the proportion of 85%) and 400 Kilos of Aluminum. When the whole mass is melted and fluid, we pour 2000 kilos of Titan minarai (Titan alloy) containing 48% of TiP2; 300 Kilos of lime and 150 Kilos of Spate-Fluor. It is heated until the reduction temperature is reached and until the slag which successively forms is sufficiently fluid.
The final product, in this case, will contain 15-20% Titan CLAIMS.
