<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Par un choix approprie des dimensions de l'appareil, on peut aussi réaliser le processus d'une manière tellement modérée, ou douce, que le mélange de minerai et de charbon couve seulement, et que par conséquent les températures n'excèdent pas 600-800 C, auxquel-' les températures on. n'a pas à craindre des partes en zinc, Du reste, il n'est pas du tout nécessaire, que les hydrocarbures soient complètement éliminés;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

In order to bring the small ores into a suitable form for their further processing, it has already been proposed to mix the ore with coking coal and to subject the mixture to distillation, with a view to transforming it into coke. of ore. In these known procedures the known example of chamber coking was always followed and they were therefore always carried out in retort furnaces Correspondingly, the coking in question was carried out in the same way as in the manufacture of coke by external heating these chambers or horns or by the passage of hot gases through the charge contained in the coking chamber.
These trials known to pro-

The coking following the process is # ..- # (, object of the invention, occurs by the fact, .or after the a, -l1Jll1aG and by virtue of the use of an almost inert gas , or air, - with provision, in the latter case, of a layer of coal in front of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
layer of ore, in order to obtain the desired result, - only as much atmospheric oxygen is sucked in, or driven through the charge, as is necessary to achieve combustion giving the degree of heat required for coking.
The heat produced in the parts of the mixture which are first lit begins to distill the charcoal at these places and the distillates are burnt by the atmospheric oxygen present. The heat thus produced distils the next layer of the mixture and so on, until the coking process has gradually passed, from top to bottom, or vice versa, all of the layer resting on the grate.
It is essential, for the realization of this coking, to grasp the moment, when the distillation process ends and when the combustion of the resulting coke begins, because otherwise there is a danger that a reduction of zinc will already occur. on the insufflation device, which would lead to losses of zinc.
According to the present invention, the onset of combustion can be obstructed or stopped simply by sprinkling water on the coked change lying on the grate, for example by means of a movable sprinkler device.
The quantity of coking material must be proportionate in the charge in such a way that after coking the product contains a quantity of reducing coke corresponding to that of the reducing materials contained in a usual muffle charge, such charge comprising, as is known, about 40 parts of reducing material on 100 parts of blende.
The process is particularly suitable for the coking of zinciferous materials in the form of small crackers, with the aim of giving them a constitution which is particularly advantageous for reduction in muffles, especially in vertical muffles.
But it is natural that this process can also be used for the coking of other minerals or materials.
The fine mixture of 'blende and charcoal, loaded on the grate with the necessary quantity of humidity, constitutes first of all a material
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
waterproof, which assumes only later. only, by 'vaporization of water and during gasification, of hydrocarbons, a. porous coherent form. The use of a tell .: sealed load on the grid of an insufflator device is new, because until now it has been believed to be possible to carry out a satisfactory insufflation work only in the case where the material to be treated is from the beginning, porous, therefore permeable to gases.
According to the process of the invention, this gas permeability is not, first of all, necessary. It occurs automatically during the escape of the distillation product (s) when the charge is gradually exposed to the heat of ignition, and it occurs in a particularly advantageous manner when the process is carried out on a movable grid, for example of a Dwight-Lloyd device, following the slow entry of the grid into the ignition zone. Since the distillation process is carried out in an endothermic way, one does not have to reckon with a great excess of heat, produced by the combustion of the hydrocarbons.
In all cases we have the full possibility of carrying out the production of heat, - by an appropriate dosage of the oxygen content of the blowing air and by the choice of coking charcoal, - so as to obtain almost complete distillation of the coal, without resulting in an unwanted reduction of the zinc oxide by the production of excessive heat.
By an appropriate choice of the dimensions of the apparatus, one can also carry out the process in such a moderate, or gentle manner, that the mixture of ore and coal only smolders, and therefore the temperatures do not exceed 600- 800 C, at which temperatures are. does not have to fear partes in zinc, Moreover, it is not at all necessary, that the hydrocarbons are completely eliminated;
because if a part remains, it collaborates in the reduction in the muffle, for this reason it is advantageous to work with an excess of coking coal,
The advantage of the process according to the invention consists in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the fact that the coke, obtained with this process, forms with the ore a completely homogeneous and coherent distillation product, which gives particularly advantageous reduction results, unlike the muffle charges, with minorais menas, hitherto known.
In these known fillers, the sulphurized blended form with the reducing material an incoherent mixture, in which the coke must play, besides the role of reducing agent, also that of disintegrating agent and therefore cannot have the degree of fineness necessary for intimate contact between reducing material and material to be reduced, because otherwise the zinc formed by reduction could only escape with difficulty. In the event that the ore portion of the muffle charge is constitutive; of a sintered material, the coke does not need to act as a disintegrating agent.
But in this case, the particles of coke and those of the material to be reduced are lodged only in a somewhat coherent way and in the form of relatively large grains next to each other, so that here We also cannot speak of a sufficiently intimate contact.
These muffle load defects are eliminated with the loads according to the process which is the object of the present invention. Here, the particles of the reducing matter are in the most intimate contact with those of the matter to be reduced and cannot separate, because the matter is of a fixed coherence.
