"Surchauffeur"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Superheater"
The present invention relates to a metal which, by virtue of its resistance to scaling by hot oxidation, is particularly suitable for the manufacture of superheater tubes for steam boilers.
Alloys which are resistant to scaling and whose resistance remains even up to 1300 C are already known, but because of the large number of their constituent elements, among which chromium and nickel play a predominant role, they are first of all very expensive and then they have a martensitic or austenitic structure, which makes them unusable or unsuitable for the manufacture of superheater tubes.
Added to this is the need for a limit
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of high hot elasticity, necessary to have sufficient safety against high pressures at temperatures exceeding 400 C, observing that only a decrease as slow as possible and not a rapid decrease in the values of the yield strength in the zone of 400 to 600 C is permissible and is of particular importance.
In addition, the high heat resistance must not be a consequence of the carbon content, because, due to the presence of free oxygen and hydrogen (formation of H2 due to electrolytic protection against corrosion, decomposition of H2O by the catalytic action of the walls of tubes formed of alloys) in the superheated steam, decarburization can easily occur at high temperatures and high pressures, (this fact is known from the processes where hydrogen under pressure) and resistance properties could undergo dangerous changes.
Extensive research has led to the use of a metal meeting the aforementioned conditions, of pearlitic structure, resistant to chipping up to at least 800 C, which is, moreover mechanically very resistant to heat and which exhibits a drop. very slow in yield strength while containing little carbon.
Such steel contains about 5 to 7% Cr and 0.5 to 3% Al; its carbon content should generally be less than 0.2%. As other constituents of the alloy; 0.3-0.8% molybdenum, 0.05-0.1% vanadium, less than 2% silicon and less than 1% manganese are preferably used. The sulfur content should not, if possible, exceed 0.02%.

The superheated steam manifold and the other elements of the superheater (as well as the tubes of the latter) are obviously made of this steel and are preferably hot worked.
For a superheater intended especially for a very high pressure and high superheating boiler, a metal of one of the following compositions can be used: (1) (2)

Of course, this metal could also be used for the manufacture of other devices subject to similar working conditions,
without departing from the present invention.
It is advisable to use, in case of low aluminum content, a higher chromium content and it has been found that the aluminum content can be reduced to about 0.5%, without substantially lowering the chipping resistance , by hot oxidation, if the chromium content is maintained at 5-7% and the sum of the aluminum and silicon contents greater than about 1.2%. Under these conditions, the resistance to the penetration of the various gases into the joints between the grains of the metal, that is to say the resistance to destruction of the intermediate material, is rather increased than decreased. At the same time the toughness, and the ductility of the metal are further improved.
