<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Figure 4 est une coupe transversale suivant 4-4 (figure 2).
Figure 5 est une coupe transversale suivant 5-5 (figure 3).
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO AUTOMOBILE WHEELS"
This invention relates to wheels and more particularly relates to wire spoked wheels for automobiles.
In the manufacture of these wheels, it was customary to stamp or stamp outwards certain parts of the wheel hubs and to constitute in these stamped or stamped outwards parts seats intended to receive the heads of the spokes. It was also customary to fix one or more additional members in the hubs of these wheels and to constitute in this or these organ-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
nes of the seats intended to receive the heads of the spokes.
In the above-mentioned examples, we usually used spokes provided with heads of various shapes, but these heads were established symmetrically with respect to the body of the spokes when they were straight, or with respect to the minor or short parts of said bodies when the spokes were curved so that, in reality, the axes of the straight spokes or the minor or short parts of the curved spokes coincided with the axes of the respective heads.
The aforementioned arrangement in which the hub is stamped or stamped outwards has the disadvantage that it is not possible to obtain a smooth or uninterrupted outer surface, which makes cleaning of the hub difficult and reduces the artistic value of the wheel. Another drawback also lies in the risk of fracture or breakage of the stamped or die-cast parts, mainly due to the forces imposed on the metal. The above-mentioned arrangement in which one or more additional members are fixed inside the hub has the drawback of increasing the weight and the cost of manufacture.
The object of the present invention is to avoid or reduce to a minimum the aforementioned drawbacks and, to this end, consists in constituting the hub and the spokes in such a way that the outer surface of the hub has a substantially uniform and continuous contour and that the maximum mechanical resistance is obtained from the hub, the spokes and the junction of these components.
The present invention also consists in establishing the hub and the spokes in such a way that the latter can be tangential and that the seats provided in the hub for the heads of the spokes are accessible to the tools which are used to constitute the seats in a industrial or mass production process.

This invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a metal spoked wheel established according to the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are cross sections of this wheel.
Figure 4 is a cross section along 4-4 (Figure 2).
Figure 5 is a cross section along 5-5 (Figure 3).
Figures 6 and 7 are two views in elevation of a radius at 90 relative to each other
Figure 8 shows part of Figure 6 on a larger scale.
As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the wheel according to the invention comprises a hub 19 a rim 2, which may be in the present example a sheet metal rim with a hollow base supporting a tire, and two series of wire spokes steel front 3 and rear 4. The hub is preferably made of sheet metal and comprises a front part in the form of a drum 5 and a rear spreading 6, the part 5 having near its front end seats intended to receive the spokes. front 3, and part 6 having in its annular wing 7 seats intended to receive the rear spokes 4. This annular wing extends rearwardly from the outer edge of the radial element 8, these two parts constituting the development 6.
The front 3 and rear 4 spokes are arranged in pairs, the spokes of each pair crossing each other and being inclined relative to the median plane of the wheel and to the radial planes of this wheel passing through the spokes. As shown, the angles of inclination of the front spokes relative to the median plane of the wheel are greater than those of the rear spokes, and the angles of inclination of the rear spokes by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
compared to the radial planes passing through these spokes are larger than those of the front spokes.
The seats provided in the drum-shaped part 5 and the outlet 6 and the associated spokes peu-. can be established according to the invention and spoke and spoke seats of different types can be used. In all cases, it will suffice to describe the invention with regard to the spokes and their seats provided in the opening 6.
In the manufacture of the hub 1, after having determined the position of the rear spokes 4, parts of the annular wing 1 adjacent to the points chosen for the spoke seats are stamped inwardly, giving them an arcuate shape in the peripheral direction of the wing, as shown in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 and as shown in 9 and 10.
The openings of the spokes and the seats of the au- le are similarly formed by punching, drilling and milling operations or by a combination of these operations, except that they are constituted by one or the other. other of the opposite ends of the arcuate parts, according to the direction to be taken by the corresponding rays. Therefore, only the formation of a single spoke opening and a single spoke seat will be described. The opening 11 and the seat 12 for a rear spoke are set up in such a way that a substantial part (approximately half in this example) of the seat is formed in the arcuate depression 9, while the remaining part of the seat is formed in the non-stamped part of the wing.
This seat is established to substantially adapt to the bearing surface of the head provided at the inner end of a rear spoke, which will now be described.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
With the appropriate type spoke steel wire having been chosen, one end is stamped or upset to form the head 13 as shown particularly in Figures 4 to 8 inclusive. The head and its bearing surface could have a convex or concave conical outline, but are convex in the present example. In addition, whatever the shape, the head is symmetrical with respect to its axis, the immediately adjacent part of the body of the spoke is symmetrical with respect to its axis, and the axis of the head makes an angle with the axis of the immediately adjacent part of the body.
Further, preferably, the angle and maximum diameter of the head is such that the surface through which the head contacts the part of the seat located in the unstressed portion of the annular flange extends (preferably slightly) beyond the adjacent part of the ray body.
In this formation of the spoke head 13, the amount of metal will be maximum towards the part of the head where the bearing surface or chord makes the greatest angle with the axis of the immediately adjacent part of the body and will be minimum towards the part of the head where the supporting surface or chord makes the smallest angle with the axis of the immediately adjacent part of the body. The distribution of the metal in the part of the head between the maximum and minimum angles will gradually vary to the same extent.
By forming the spoke and more particularly its head in the manner which has just been described, it emerges from FIGS. 4 and 5 that the part of the bearing surface of the spoke head which forms the greatest angle with l The axis of the immediately adjacent part of the spoke body and the adjacent parts of the bearing surface are brought against the part of the seat formed in the arcuate depression.
Likewise, the arcuate depression starts from the part of the seat formed in this depression and extends in the general direction of the radius when mounted, and a significant part
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the seat is formed in this arched depression. The maximum mechanical strength is therefore obtained for the seats and the surrounding parts of the hub, the spokes, and in particular their heads, and the junction between these parts. In addition, the main part of the spoke body which extends from a point near its outer end to the spoke head is straight and the arcuate depression provides room to accommodate the part of this body which is immediately adjacent to the head.
In addition, as a result of the formation of the spoke, its head and the spoke seat in the hub in the manner previously described, it has become industrially practicable to manufacture the wheel taking into account the angle d. 'tangential inclination' of the rays, which angle is about 45 in this case. About one-half of this angle is each of the angles of the axis of the heads with respect to the axes of the spokes and seats with respect to the radial lines passing axially through them.
In other words, the formation of the spoke and its head is practicable, industrially or in large series without any risk of weakening it and the formation of the seat in the hub is also practicable industrially, being since this seat is easily accessible by suitable tools inserted in the hub and since these tools can be constructed so strong enough to withstand the stresses to which they are subjected in service.
Another feature of the invention resides in the formation of the hub 1 so that it can be fixed and mounted on an internal hub 14 in such a manner as to prevent the fastening device from accidentally coming loose and to prevent the fracture or breakage of the hub during service of the wheel. The radial part 8 of the hub has bosses 15 stamped inward, connecting to each other at their bases and extending radially outward, all making the same angle with the line.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
radial passing through their center.
Between these bosses, the part has bearing elements 16 which are arranged to come into contact with the fixed rim 17 of the inner hub. The bosses 15 have openings 18 which tapering towards the rear and the centers of which are placed on the same circle concentric with the axis of the hub. Bolts 19 fixed to the fixed flange 17 pass through these openings and nuts 20 screw onto these bolts and fit into the openings so as to secure the hub 1 and therefore the wheel to the inner hub. By virtue of this arrangement, the bosses can flex when the nuts are fully tightened, so that they elastically lock the latter on the bolts and furthermore avoid the risk of the hub breaking in service.
