a) un dispositif de pivotage du boisseau, deux pivots, l'un sur la tête et l'autre au pied du boisseau suivant son axe: ces pi- vots étant logés dans les éléments antifriction servant d'ap- pui latéral prévus à la tête et au pied du corps du robinet et dont les positions sont réglées au montage dans le sens latéral de façon à prendre en marche la pression latérale du fluide sur le boisseau. b) un dispositif d'étanchéité constitué par un élement d'étan- ohéité d'une part rodé contre la face de la tête du boisseau et d'autre part'maintenu contre le corps du robinet par serrage fixe ou au moyen d'un dispositif de bourrage auxiliaire;

Fig.5.- Une coupe horizontale 0-D et vue suivant flèche X
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Self-releasing ball valve.
The realization of a good valve for fluids at high pressure, well sealed and easy to handle presents great difficulties because of the need to give the valve a strong pressure along its axis. If desired, for ease of maneuvering, reduce this pressure during movement. a powerful spring is necessarily employed which, in addition to its bulk * gives great friction during the maneuver, both by itself and by the control device, the jam and the body of the valve on its seat.
The use of the pressure of the fluid for the clamping of the timber has not been possible until now in medium and high pressure centers, owing to the difficulty of solving both the problems of perfect sealing. and the elimination of the resistances mentioned above.
The present invention obviates these drawbacks and is distinguished: 1) by the application to conical ball valves of an automatic release with rollers or cams and for obtaining the tightness of the plug and the seal. by the use of pressure

fluid; the part of the large diameter plug is in communication with the inside of the plug or with the inlet or high pressure port of the valve and, the part of the small diameter plug, with a short stem , bearing the sealing and loosening devices, may or may not be in communication with the inside of the plug or with the outlet or low pressure port of the valve; this valve also includes the anti-friction devices:
a) a device for pivoting the valve, two pivots, one on the head and the other at the foot of the valve along its axis: these pins being housed in the antifriction elements serving as lateral support provided for the head and foot of the valve body and the positions of which are adjusted during assembly in the lateral direction so as to take on the lateral pressure of the fluid on the valve. b) a sealing device consisting of a sealing element on the one hand lapped against the face of the valve head and on the other hand held against the body of the valve by fixed clamping or by means of a auxiliary stuffing device;
the said devices being tightened by means of a light spring and by the pressure of the fluid, give only a slight friction of the lapped part during the rotation and the stuffing, during the axial displacement. a) a release device consisting of an axial support element (ball bearing or central pivot) and by axial release elements arranged between this support and the plug; one fixed to the control lever, the other to the bushel; these elements being provided with rollers, cams or other anti-friction devices.
2) By a device for adjusting the lateral play of the pivots in the valve body.
3) By a device for balancing the valve in the horizontal direction by means of exhaust windows in the valve and in the body of the valve symmetrically arranged with respect to the axis of the valve, - the fluid inlet being planned next

the axis of the bushel,
The invention thus described briefly in its essential constituent parts has the great advantage of making it possible to produce a perfect sealing valve, easy to operate by means of a very simple release device leaving only very friction. reduced bushel and seal.
The use of the anti-friction systems described is particularly advantageous for high-pressure and large-dimension valves and enables the range of possibilities in this respect to be considerably extended. In addition, they ensure longer operation without excessive wear and loss of adjustment.
It is easy to realize that, even apart from the rollers, this invention is capable of numerous industrial applications when it comes to devices requiring great tightening at rest and great ease of maneuvering in motion,
The accompanying schematic drawings given, ', by way of example, represent: Fig.l, - A vertical section of a variant of valve with cam release, provided with a lapping sealing device and anti-friction device for lateral forces.
Fi.2.- A partial vertical section of a variant of a roller release valve, fitted with an internal sealing device and auxiliary stuffing.
Fig.3.- A section and partial view according to A-B Fig.4.- A vertical section of a variant of a laterally balanced ball valve with lapping sealing device and auxiliary packing placed on the outside.
Fig. 5.- A horizontal section 0-D and view following arrow X
The valve shown in fig. 1 has a plug (2) capable of having a large taper, the inner part of which may possibly communicate through holes 15 and 16 with the head and the foot of the plug, so that the latter is subjected always the fluid pressure. Hole 15 can be deleted
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
if it is not desired to exert pressure against the sealing device. On the other hand, it is understood that the base of the plug can, in addition, be in communication with the inlet of the valve by a notch made in the latter as shown in phantom in FIG. l. The spring 10, with the rod 9 ensure the initial tightening of the valve against its seat.
The head of the plug carries the support piece 3 permanently fixed.
This part constitutes the axial and lateral support element of the head of the plug 2. At the foot of the plug is provided the pin 17 which can turn in the cover 4.
The lateral position of the nozzle 1a against the bearing of the pivot 11 and of the cover 4 against the pivot 17 are adjustable on assembly by screws 20 and 21 until the faces of the pins and the corresponding holes come into contact so as to support the lateral pressure of the fluid during the descent of the valve during operation.
The valve is controlled by a lever 6 fitted with a camē.5 which rests on the screw stop 7. By operating the cam 5, the lower part of which is prismatic in shape. faces suitably inclined in both directions of rotation, causes the support piece 3 which approximately matches its contour to descend, until the moment resisting the rotation of the plug is less than the resisting moment of the pressure caused by the cam, .5 on the support 3.
At this moment, if the maneuver of rotation of the handle is continued, the bushel will be driven in this movement. This result will be easily achieved because the friction resistance of the pivots 11 and 17 of the stop 19 and of the sealing device 8 is minimal, all the more so as it is possibly possible to provide the pivots and the stop with a anti-friction device such as balls for example. In addition, by limiting the travel of the cam, it is possible to ensure direct drive. Sealing is

produced by a membrane device 8 with lapped ring against the bearing part 3 fixed to the head of the valve. The outer part of the diaphragm is clamped and held stationary by a bush 12 and the screw-cover against the valve body.
A spring 13 ensures the initial tightening of the diaphragm ring against its seat. It can also be used to ensure the initial tightening of the plug on its seat, replacing the spring 10. The screw 7 makes it possible to adjust the axial play of the release parts 5 and 3 to the strict minimum. In the event of fluid flow reversal in the valve, it is quite possible that the valve loosening phenomenon occurs by the pressure of the fluid, which will be useful to avoid especially for the closed position of the valve.
A stop device may be provided for this purpose, for example by a screw 26 screwed into the cover 4 by providing a seal 27,
Figures 2 and 3 show the same valve where the seal is ensured by a nozzle 8 'with ground collar against the sheath 3' fixed to the head of the valve and an auxiliary packing placed under the collar on the outside of the nozzle. 8 'and tightened by the return spring 13 having the same functions as in fig.
In this example, the release cams are replaced by two 5 'rollers. These rollers are held laterally by the sheath 18 in which they are housed, but when maneuvering, they can roll on the one hand on the concave bottom of their housing in this sheath, on the other hand on the head 3 'which is also concave. .
The cylindrical exterior of the sheath 18 is housed without play in the part 3 '. This enables a thrust ball 19 'to serve both to transmit lateral and axial pressure from the plug to the valve body.
The control can be done as in the case of fig.l but in certain cases of practice, it may be advantageous to remove the sealing device 8 'and replace it with a part 20 with a ground collar against the underside of the cover cap 7 '. The part 20 to which the control lever is attached engages, with axial play, with the part 18 held by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
return spring 14 placed between the two.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the constructive form of a valve having a laterally balanced 2 'plug. The fluid inlet is provided along the axis of the valve with passage through the side windows of the valve 22 and 23 symmetrical and the outlet through orifice 24. In this way the resulting pressure - 'on the valve is directed. along its axis.
By way of example, the part 20 'is provided here both as an axial stop and as a lapping sealing element.
The return spring of the valve, not shown on the drawing, can be placed at the foot of the latter or else at the head of the valve, like the spring 10 bearing on the one hand on the head of the valve and on the other hand on a washer fixed to the rod 9, itself fixed to the head of the plug.
Sealing is achieved by an auxiliary packing 25 and by a stop 20 'lapped against the cover screw 7' held by the spring 14 and by the pressure of the fluid. Provision can be made for the conical angle of the plug to be balanced laterally until the cone is transformed into a flat disc (case of taper of 180. In various practical cases, the axial release elements may have the shape of toothed crowns - re inclined (not shown on the plans), one fixed to the duct 3 or 3 '(fig. 1 and 2) and the other to the duct 5 or 18.
The use of rollers or toothed rings has the great advantage over other known systems of ensuring the good reversibility of the control movement and consequently the tightness at rest because they allow, with resistance equal, their placement very close to the axis of the plug and thus a relatively high inclination of the bearing surfaces. It is obvious that this invention is not limited to the embodiments described which are given only by way of non-limiting examples and that the constituent elements can vary in number, size and position without changing the spirit. of the invention.
