<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PROCESS FOR SULFATION BY THE GYPSUM OF THE AMMONIACAL SOLUTION USED FOR THE TREATMENT OF GAS OF WHICH THE
CARBONIC ACID CONTENT IS APPROXIMATELY 10%
It has previously been proposed to precipitate with ammonia ammonium sulphate contained in the solution serving for the purification of gas, the precipitation by ammonia being carried out continuously and independently of the absorption by the gas. ammonia of the acidic compounds of these gases After precipitation of ammonium sulphate, the ammoniacal solution is made approximately neutral by the release of its ammonia,
and the ammonia thus liberated is immediately reused for the precipitation of further quantities of ammonium sulphate. The approximately neutral solution leaving the distillation apparatus is sent to the gas scrubber, which is fitted with a cooler, and which receives the gases 4 treated with the addition of an appropriate quantity of free ammonia. *
The object of the present patent is to modify this process for the case where it is a question of treating, in the scrubber, a gas the carbonic acid content of which is close to 100%.
As in this case, it will no longer be necessary

In order to downgrade the ammonia entrained by the exhaust gases of the washing machine, nothing prevents supplying the washer with a liquid charged with the desired quantity of free ammonia to combine all the carbonic acid admitted .
Under these conditions) it will no longer be necessary to render the ammoniacal solution resulting from the precipitation of ammonium sulphate approximately neutral. The operation of the distillation apparatus serving to return to the apparatus for the precipitation of ammonium sulphate. ammonium, the free ammonia held in solution, will be regulated so as to decrease the free ammonia content of the treated solution, and this to such a degree, that after absorption of carbonic acid in the apparatus. washer, it remains weakly alkaline to come into contact with the calcium sulphate used for the transformation of ammonium carbonate into ammonium sulphate.
The procedure is carried out, for example, in the following manner, with the aid of the apparatus shown schematically in the accompanying drawing.
The neutral and cold solution of ammonium sulphate, the content of which is close to its saturation point, is poured into the upper part of an ammonia absorber 22, at the base of which free ammonia is admitted in 23 .
The precipitate of ammonium sulphate formed is deposited in the conical bottom tank 24, and the ammoniacal solution flows in 25, passes through a temperature exchanger 26, and feeds the upper part of a distillation column 27 provided with a indirect heating with water vapor 28, and connected to a condenser 29 for the released vapors loaded with ammonia. The part of the ammonia which is liberated and which separates out in this condensate alone returns to the absorber apparatus 22 to serve again for the precipitation of ammonium sulfate from the solution, while the water of condensation return to column 27.

Indirect heating of the distillation column will be regulated so as to leave a certain alkalinity to the hot solution which flows from the lower part of the distillate column 27. This solution is successively cooled in the temperature exchanger 26 and in a cooler 30.
It is then admitted to the upper part of the carbonic acid absorber washer 2, which is fitted with a cooling device 31. The admission 1 of carbonic acid into the absorber washer 2 is adjusted in the same way. in leaving a weak alkalinity to the washing solution which exits at 6, and which is then brought into contact in the mixer 7 with a finely pulverized gypsum suspension, after which it passes successively through the filter 8, the exchanger temperature 9, still 10, and revator 19. The solution then returns through temperature exchanger 9 and line 32 to ammonia absorber 22, to resume the cycle described.
On the other hand, the ammonia released in the still 10 is also returned to the device 22 through line 33.
