Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 EMI2.1

  Process for preserving wood.

   The present invention relates to a process for preserving wood. It is known for the protection of wood against the attack of fungi, to use solutions of the salts of organic nitro compounds, in particular dinitrophenol with organic bases, these solutions being used alone or in admixture with inorganic salts. and other additions.

   It has now been discovered that instead of the salts, which have been used exclusively for a long time, of dinitrophenol with aromatic bases, it is possible to advantageously use the salts.

 salts of nitrated phenols with oxyalkylated amines. These salts are much more easily soluble in water and, mixed with other substances such as, for example, inorganic salts or other additions such as formaldehyde or compounds which give formaldehyde by dissociation, they They dissolve still easily, they have the other advantage that their aqueous solutions attack the iron to a still less degree than the solutions of the corresponding salts of aromatic amines, and that even in case of cooking it does not escape. no significant amounts of the,

   organic base in the form of vapor.

   It has been found particularly suitable among others
 EMI2.1
 salts of dinitraphenol with mono- and di-oxyethylaniline, and in particular the salts formed with aliphatic oxyalkylamines such as mono-, di- and tri-oxyethylamine and the corresponding oxypropylamines. These latter salts can also be used with anti-corrosive additions such as potassium dichromate.

   For example, pine wood is impregnated, in a known manner, with the use of vacuum and pressure, by means of a 2% solution of a mixture consisting of 85.5% sodium fluoride, 2.5 % zinc fluoride, 1.0% hexamethylene tetramine and 11.0% dinitrophenol-oxyethylaniline by the replacement of dinitrophenol-oxyethylaniline by dinitrophenol-oxyethylamine or -oxypropylamine (the latter consisting of a mixture of the bases primary, secondary and tertiary as obtained for example by the action of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide on ammonia,) we arrive at $ impregnation mixtures having properties in- better solubility core.
