<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

improvements to boilers and fireplaces.
The present invention relates to appliances for the control of fireplaces and is particularly applicable, but not limited to, the control of the supply of fuel and air to a boiler or a battery of boilers, and it should stretch well. understood that where in this specification reference is made to the control of the supply of fuel and coal, this covers the case of the supply of solid or liquid fuel, or the supply of air, or both supply of fuel and air.
In the automatic control of boilers, it has already been proposed to have a control member operating under the effect of a condition of the boiler (for example a piston raised and lowered automatically by the increases and decreases of the pressure of the boiler. steam) and a controlled member actuated by the former and effecting resulting variations in the action of a feed accessory such as a damper, air blower, fuel feed mechanism or the like
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
whose operation is a function of the final output of the boiler.
In combination with these actuators and controllers, it has further been proposed to provide a means whereby the relationship between the movement of the actuator and that of the actuator is not constant within the limits of. operation of the devices. For example, it has been proposed to communicate the movement of a flue outlet damper to a regulator for controlling the flow of steam to a steam engine which operates a fuel supply device via. a cam, and provides a means of adjusting the shape of the cam to ensure the desired coordination between the position of the damper and the rate of fuel feed at the various settings.
In the improved control apparatus, there is a main controller operating under the effect of steam pressure or some other condition of the boiler and a number of controllers effecting a variation in an access. power supply, the position of the controlled members being regulated by the position of the main control member, and means are provided by which the movement given to a controlled member and corresponding to a given movement of the control member. main command can be varied. The invention also consists of an improved form of power control device using chains or cables the length of which can be varied and consists of particular means employed to operate the main control member.
In the preferred form of the apparatus, a series of chains or cables are connected to the feed control device by a member whose position is a function of the steam pressure or other condition of the boiler, (1) so that when the organ moves, successive chains or cables come into action. In the following description, the assumed condition of @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the boiler is the steam pressure boiler and the accessories described are a coil damper and a fuel feed mechanism, but the invention is not limited to this condition or to these accessories or to any combination particular of these.
The main control means comprises a piston operating under the effect of the vapor pressure and so that the load which it carries in the form of a relay device is balanced for the minimum vapor pressure, so as to produce a very sensitive action. The relay mechanism comprises an electric motor carried by the piston and forcing it to receive a continuous rotation, and it carries two coaxial gears, one of which engages, when it rises or falls, with a second pinion forming part of a set of bevel wheels mounted in a slide and rotating a shaft provided with a threaded part engaged in a nut.
When the piston rises, one of the pinions turns the shaft in one direction, which forces it to move upward through the nut because of the thread, and when it falls, the The other pinion rotates the shaft in the reverse direction. When the piston comes to rest, rotation of the shaft ultimately drives the driven pinion out of engagement with the pinion carried by the piston. The piston is preferably controlled in a known manner in that it is made to come into engagement with a successive series of weights or chain links and in this connection it is quite certain that it is not. Generally speaking, it is not new to employ a continuously rotating piston as a control member operating under the effect of a boiler condition.
In the accompanying drawings which show the invention schematically, FIG. 1 shows in elevation the preferred form of the main piston control apparatus, in which the position of the piston is automatically controlled by the vapor pressure in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Boiler. fig. 2 shows in elevation the additional damper control unit, actuated by the main control piston. fig. 3 shows in elevation the additional control apparatus intended for the supply of fuel and actuated from the main control piston.
If we refer to fig. We see a piston A moving in a cylinder B filled with oil which communicates with a chamber C containing water at the bottom and oil at the top; the lower part of this chamber is connected by a pipe D to the boiler.
The piston carries at its upper end a weight E which is guided in frame parts a. On the edges b of this frame are mounted a series of weights.1 which are placed freely and which may have equal or varying weights and be placed at equal or unequal distances. When the pressure difference on the two faces of the piston Al, the difference depending on the pressure of the steam in the boiler, exceeds the total weight of the piston and the weight E, the piston rises until it meets the lower weight F. It will then stop unless there is sufficient vapor pressure to lift that weight, after which the piston raises more until it meets the next weight and so on.
The position of the piston controls the position of a control cable G and in the embodiment shown this cable is carried by a shaft H actuated by an independent motor in such a way that the piston does not have to have sufficient power to. operate the cable but acts as a relay.
The control mechanism is established as follows: A motor l operates by means of bevel gears Jl a shaft J and the latter, by means of a worm screw J2 and a worm wheel J3 , keeps the piston constantly rotating; this @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
helps to minimize the effects of inertia due to the friction of the stuffing box and the like !. To allow this rotation without rotation of the weight E, a stop bearing El is provided.
Above and below the worm wheel J3 are gears J4 and J5 of equal diameter. These pinions are intended to come into engagement alternately with pinions H4 and H5 carried by bevel pinions H6, H7, each of which comes into engagement with a bevel pinion H3. These bevel gears form a bevel gear train and are carried by a console H2 which slides on a guide rod K and through which the shaft H. passes. The pinion H6 is wedged or fixed by key on the shaft. H and the pinion H7 is freely mounted on it; the upper part of the shaft is threaded and passes through a nut L and it is connected to the cable G by a swivel ring H1.
We will now assume that the piston rises; the pinion J4 then engages with the pinion H4 and the shaft H is thus rotated and also raised as a result of its engagement in the nut L. The shaft H stops rotating when the piston stops in its rise because the pinion H4 is raised so as to disengage from the pinion J4.
If the piston drops back, pinion J5 engages pinion H5 and via free bevel pinions H7, H3, it actuates bevel pinion H6 in the opposite direction which forces shaft H to descend. When the piston stops descending, the shaft H stops because the pinion H5 ceases to mesh with the pinion J5.
The piston thus acts as a relay regulating the position of the shaft H and consequently of the control cable G.
The main control cable G is connected in any suitable way to a number of additional control stations. The main cable can for example be connected to a shaft on which are mounted a number of additional control cables which move at the same time as the cable? @ 1 He
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
main control, and by the use of pulleys of variable dimensions, the movement can be multiplied or reduced.
In an additional control station there is a control device which according to the present invention can be set independently of the other controls. This is achieved by connecting the additional control cable M, pin 2, to a series of weights Q in number equal to those of the main control device and usually or normally arranged at the same distance from each other. if the cable M moves at the same speed as the cable G, and at corresponding distances from each other if the movement of the cable is multiplied or multiplied.
The weights are connected by chains e and are suspended by chains. 1 from a fixed bracket 0; the cable M passes through this console and through the weights and is connected at its end to a stopper, ± which is intended to engage from below with the lower weight Q and to lift the latter. When the cable has moved sufficiently, the other Q weights are entered in turn. The Q weights are connected by cables or chains R1, R2, R3, R4 to a counterweight lever S attached to the register P of a flue T.
The length of each of these R1-R4 chains can be adjusted so that the position of the register corresponding to any given steam overpressure can be altered by particular circumstances such as gas analysis. flue; any suitable means of adjustment may be employed for the length of the chain.
For the position shown in the drawings, the damper is fully open, the Lower weight Q, is about to be lifted and the chain R4 is tensioned; however, the length of chain R4 can be adjusted independently of the main control unit and the register position can thus be varied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
When the stopper m is raised to bring the two lower Q weights into contact, the chain R4 becomes loose and the register is controlled by the cable R3 which then becomes taut, and so on for other positions.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 3 of the drawings for the fuel control is similar in all respects to that previously described except that the chains Rl-R4 are connected to a drum U connected to a rheostat lever v by a cable.: 9: passing. on a pulley.! and carrying a counterweight w. Each rheostat regulates the speed of an engine or other device which determines the speed of fuel supply to each boiler and in this way each rheostat can by means of the chains be put in any desired position. depending on that given by the main control unit.
It can be seen that by suitably spacing the weights Q and by adjusting the lengths of the cables R as well as by providing a sufficient number of weights and cables, it is possible to ensure that the variability of the operation of the controlled component, under the control of the control member, approaches (although in practice the controlled member moves by a series of saccades) to any desired curve (instead of the sinusoidal curve) and that in general the curve can be easily transformed or modified in any part of its length without necessarily affecting the curve at other points.
