<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
prédéterminée et non réglable pour le liquide de freinage,on a prévu,suivant la présente invention,un deuxième parcours qui peut être réglé à volonté suivant la charge et la vites- se du véhicule et les conditions du sol.e parcours est réa- lisé par une cavité 2a de la tige 2 communiquant avec le compartiment 5a ;

SHOCK ABSORBER FOR VEHICLE SUSPENSION SPRINGS AND ESPECIALLY AUTOMOBILES.
The present invention relates to a shock absorber device for spring suspension vehicles, in particular for automobiles. According to the invention, the object of this shock absorber is to allow the compression of the spring when the wheels strike an obstacle, and to oppose, according to a certain law, the return of the spring to its initial position. In addition, this shock absorber provides a means for adjusting this resistance at will according to the condition of the ground and the speed of the vehicle, and this adjustment can be carried out before or during the journey, from the driver's seat.
The shock absorber forming the subject of the present invention is based on the principle of the hydraulic brake and uses as the fluid a lubricating liquid, such as glycerin or an oil, preferably castor oil, which is not not damage the rubber, of which some parts are made.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the invention, the liquid passes from one cavity to the other through a diaphragm without any difficulty when compressing the spring and encountering a resistance, which is adjustable during the return of the spring to. its normal position.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, the application of the invention to the suspension of an automobile.
FIG. I shows, in vertical section, the shock absorber mounted between the frame of the vehicle and a point of the semi-elliptical spring as close as possible to the axis of the wheel.
Fig. 2 shows on a larger scale and in detail part of fig.I.
FIG. 3 shows a variant of the control device for adjusting remotely, possibly from the driver's seat itself, the passage of the liquid when the spring returns to its normal position.
Referring more particularly to Figs. I and 2,1 the shock absorber comprises a cylinder 5 and a piston 3 movable in the cylinder and provided with a rod 2 which exits to the outside through a stuffing box 14 provided in a cover 10 fixed to the upper end of the cylinder with the interposition of a suitable gasket,
The piston divides the inside of the cylinder into two compartments or chambers 5a and 5b for the brake fluid. The passage of the fluid from one compartment to the other is ensured by a series of longitudinal grooves 5 'provided in par. - internal tie of the cylinder and having transverse sections decreasing from the lower end to the upper end,
so that the braking action of the fluid gradually decreases during the inward stroke of the piston, ie during the compression of the springs of the vehicle and gradually increases during the stroke of the piston inward. exterior, ie during the rebound.
Besides these grooves forming a constriction of form
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
predetermined and not adjustable for the brake fluid, there is provided, according to the present invention, a second path which can be adjusted at will according to the load and speed of the vehicle and the ground conditions. by a cavity 2a of the rod 2 communicating with the compartment 5a;
the liquid from the chamber or compartment 5b can pass into the cavity 2a through two or more slots 2 'provided at the lower end of the rod 3 and then into the chamber Sa, The cavity 2a further serves to receive the volume of liquid corresponding to the volume of liquid corresponding to the volume of the part of the rod 2 which enters the cylinder during the inward stroke of the piston; in this cavity, air will be compressed , which contributes to the proper functioning of the vehicle.
The adjustment of the outlet of the slots 2 'is obtained by means of a small piston 13, which can be moved axially in the cavity 2a, in correspondence with the slots 2', so as to discover more or less the said slits.
The small piston 12 can be actuated from the outside using a button 13 'screwed to the outer end of a rod 13 arranged in an axial hole of the rod 2 and carrying at the other end the small piston 13, a spring I3a disposed in the cavity 2a tends to force the small piston 12 outwards and, in cooperation with the button 13 ', serves to maintain said piston 12 in the adjusted position.
If it is desired to completely cancel the damping effect of the present device during the compression of the vehicle suspension spring, it is possible to provide in the piston 3 holes 3 'adjusted by a valve II arranged so as to allow passage freely liquid from 5a to 5b and not in the opposite direction.
A rubber bush 15 hermetically encloses, between a disc 9 fixed to the rod 2 and the buffer 10, the rod 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and the stuffing box 14; a second tubular metal sleeve 16 fixed between the metal disc 9 and an elastic washer 6, which will be discussed in the following, serves as a guide and protection. The buffer 10 slides smoothly, as a piston, in the said bush, and, if it is provided with a suitable packing, for example elastic bands, the rubber bush 15 can be omitted.
In addition, the suspension would thus be improved by the compressed air cushion located on the buffer 10 during the bending phase of the spring,
The buffer 10 is provided with a hole 10a inside the sleeve 15 and, in this hole, is placed a stop valve consisting of a ball 17 and a spring 17 '.
If, as a result of the wear of the stuffing box packing 14, a small quantity of liquid escapes, it is collected in the groove IOb and, - as a result of either the compression of the air in the sleeve 15, 'or from the inertia of the ball 17 during the oscillations of the vehicle, it returns to the chamber ISb through the hole 10a, thus avoiding any loss of liquid in this path. So that the liquid does not escape through the hole of the rod 2 going to the rod 13, subjected to small and infrequent displacements, a small gland 18 is provided in a second cavity 2b at the upper end of the rod 2.
Fig.3 shows a device for remote actuation of the small piston 12. The button or nut 13 'is replaced by a cap 13' 'functioning as a connection between a wire 19 and the rod I3; a long nut 20 perforated, in which the cap 13 '' slides serves as a support for the flexible bush 21 of the wire. An ordinary control device for this transmission
