<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Advanced drills and their manufacture"
The present invention relates to an improved form of bits or drills made from rods, bars or profiles of suitable section, flattened or otherwise, by subjecting these rods, bars or profiles to a torsional force which gives them a twisted spiral shape or in a helix around their longitudinal axis.
It has previously been proposed to provide rotary twisted bits, intended to drill metal. From an axial notch to the drilling face in order to leave a core or central nodule of the material on which one operates, which core is evacuated the along the grooves of the bit body.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, a bit is formed of a metal strip, twisted in a helix around its longitudinal axis and sharpened at one or both ends along two oblique faces whose planes intersect along a straight line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis; the drill bit having at one or both ends an axial groove such that it forms a slot or a space between said oblique faces.
The bit thus improved is intended to be used more especially for drilling holes for bolts, nails, etc. in stone, cement, brick or similar materials. During its use, the bit can be supported by means of a mandrel or a similar support, to which means are added, such as a shaft for performing the rotation; the said support being of the form intended for tools with two useful ends, so that when one end of the tool is worn, the position of the tool can be reversed in the chuck and the other end can be used immediately .
In the accompanying drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are side views of parts of the improved bit; Figure 3 is a top view; Figure 4 shows the shape of the cross section of a strip of metal from which the drills described in the invention are made.
As shown in figs. 1, 2 and 3, the improved drill comprises a shank A on which, at one or both ends, oblique faces B have been placed and separated from each other by an axial groove.
To manufacture the drill, we twist uniformly around its longitudinal axis, as described above, a strip of metal of initially rectangular and elongated section and cut to the appropriate length-These pieces are crimped in a support

suitably shaped, and passed over rotating wheels, burs or other abrasive instruments s, arranged at a suitable angle to form the desired oblique faces B on the tool.
The rotating wheels are arranged so that the line of intersection of the planar faces on opposite sides of the center of the tool is perpendicular to the axis of the latter.
The angle at which the shank has been twisted is such that, if the shank is properly presented to the rotating grinders, the necessary stripping behind the cutting edge is obtained, and the edges on the two opposite sides of the center can be molded as the support moves along the rotating grinding wheels in a straight path without changing the position of the tool in the support. The central opening allows simultaneous sharpening of both said edges, the opening being formed before or after sharpening using a circular saw or other suitable tool.
The tools can be presented in a continuous manner in front of the rotating grinding wheels, the circular saw or a similar device and by suitably arranging a second series of rotating grinding wheels, bristles or other instruments, it is possible to simultaneously spare at both ends of the tools the tools. cutting planes.
The central groove L drill bit allows, during use, the formation in the bottom of the hole of a small nodule, but since the material in which the hole is drilled is friable, it crumbles under the pressure of the drill bit. as it advances.
The section of the metal strip from which the drill bit is made can be rectangular, but one will preferably use strips whose opposite sides are hollowed out or concave in such a way that the strip / is less wide in the center than on the edges, like the shows fig. 4.
