"Improvements to Electron Emissive Cathodes."
The present invention relates to the cathodes of electron emission tubes. It relates more particularly to such a constitution of said cathodes that they can be heated directly by the current of the sector without resulting in irregularities in the electronic emission.
It also provides a method of manufacturing the improved cathodes. It covers, as new industrial products, all vacuum tubes or lamps, regardless of their application: high or low frequency amplifiers for receivers, detectors, oscillation generators, valves, etc. . and whatever the number of electrodes of the device to which it is applied: diode, triode, tetrode, etc ....

It also consists in constituting the cathode of a refractory metal wire (tungsten for example), preferably of fairly large diameter, this wire being covered with an adhesive layer of a refractory and insulating material (for example of magnesia), on which the electron-emitting conductor is applied, in the form, for example, of a thoriated tungsten filament, wound in a contiguous helix or not, either over the entire length of the insulating sheath, or only in the vicinity of the middle part of the latter: or else the electron emitting conductor is a solid ring applied to the sheath, preferably towards the middle part of the latter. for the manufacture of the cathode according to the invention, the procedure is as follows, or in a similar manner:
a wire of refractory metal, of tungsten for example, preferably of rather large diameter, is taken and it is brought to a temperature of approximately 3,200 K in a bed of magnesia. Under these conditions the wire is coated with a layer of insulating enamel. The thoriated tungsten filament is then wound on the sheath thus formed, which is free at one end, can be: either free at the other, in which case the cathode connection is provided by passing through the envelope of the vacuum receptacle d 'a special driver; or connected to the other to one of the current supply conductors to the sheathed wire. which makes it possible to avoid a special cathode output.
As has been said, the emissive filament can advantageously be massed in the middle region of the sheathed conductor; it can also be replaced by a ring made for example of thoriated tungsten, applied in the same region. The connection with the outside of this emissive part can be ensured according to one of the two variants already indicated. Of course, two connections must be provided with the outside, in relation to the ends of the sheathed conductor, to allow the

circulation in it of a current which will serve to bring it to the suitable temperature. the invention will be better understood by means of Figures 1 and 2 attached.
According to FIG. 1, a core made up of a metal wire 1 is covered with an insulating refractory layer 2, on which is wound in a helix a metal wire 3 having a high emissivity of electrons at relatively low temperature. According to Figure 2, the emissive material 3 is concentrated in the form of a ring in the middle part of the sheathed rod.
The cathode in accordance with the invention can be applied to any type of tube with several electrodes, the manufacture of which will be carried out according to all methods known to those skilled in the art.
The invention is susceptible to numerous variant embodiments: it is thus, for example, that it is possible to use as refractory materials all materials whose melting temperature is between that of the metal constituting the central conductor and that of emission of the metal or metal compound constituting the emitting cathode proper: this is how we can envisage the use of barite, strontian, lime, etc.
In addition, we have found that the performance of such a cathode is lower. Since, on the other hand, it is desirable, in order not to be hampered by voltage drops, to cause the cathode to consume only a low current intensity, it is necessary to seek a high efficiency, to which contribute the following provisions
First of all, the thickness of the insulating layer interposed between the heating wire and the emitting cathode proper is reduced as much as possible. Secondly, a suitably supported low-temperature emissive material will be chosen to constitute it.
According to a first embodiment, a heated filament

so much is surrounded by a nickel cylinder covered with oxides. The nickel cylinder is as small as possible in diameter and insulated from the filament by a thin layer of desiccant withstanding the temperature of 1500, for example of magnesia. It is useful in this case to give the nickel cylinder a rough surface to allow adhesion of the oxide. It is possible, for example, for this purpose, to cover the cylinder with a fine wire spiral with non-contiguous turns.
According to another embodiment, it is possible to further reduce the external surface, and consequently the heating power: this mode consists in winding the oxide-bearing filament in a helix directly on the heating core, the insulator interposed. being as thin as possible.
Various variants give particularly good results: a) the heating core is made of tungsten, the interposed insulation consists of a thin layer of tungsten oxide, on which is spiraled a nickel-chromium wire covered with oxide, constituting the cathode proper. b) the core is in nichrome, the insulation in nichrome oxide, carrying a spitalized cathode as above and covered with oxide. c) the core is of any suitable metal, for example tungsten, nichrome or molybdenum. The insulation consists of a cold cellulose varnish based on magnesia or barium sulphate.
The emitting cathode is made of a coiled wire and covered with oxides, as before. d) the core is also of any refractory metal, the insulation being constituted by a hot varnish based on silica.
The actual cathode is constituted as indicated above
Based on the above exemplary embodiments, one can, of course, imagine other embodiments without departing from the spirit of the invention.
