<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Gasifier.
The usual gasifiers are suitable for gasifying fuels in large fragments (coal, briquettes, coke, etc.), but they are not suitable for the treatment of fine grain or powder fuels, such as raw lignite for example.
The present invention relates to a gasifier which gasifies under excellent conditions and complements granular and powdery coals.
This gasifier consists of a cylindrical chamber, optionally flat with respect to its diameter, which is placed so that the axis of the cylinder is horizontal. The granular or pulverulent fuel, as well as the gasifying agents, are introduced into this chamber tangentially, separated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
or together, preferably in several places on the periphery, so that the mixture is animated, while gasifying vigorously, with a one-way rotational movement, without depositing significant quantities of particles. solid cules; the products formed by the gasification, as well as the ash, leave the chamber through an orifice formed towards the center of its lateral face.
A process consisting in gasifying pulverulent fuels in cylindrical chambers is already well known, but in this process the fuel is not introduced tangentially, but on the contrary as centrally as possible, so that the gasifying agents do not circulate. not in the same direction as the material to be carbonated; moreover, in this known process, the ashes remain in the same chamber of the gasifier. The gasifier which is the object of the present invention offers over the already known process the advantage that the gasifying agents come into more intimate contact with the material to be gasified, so that even granular materials are completely gasified. .
The ash is drawn out of the gasification chamber in the form of an extremely fine powder through the central orifice of the side face, so that there is no need for grids or ash collectors, which always form an obstacle to the rotation of gas and fuel.
The gasifying agents are preferably introduced only through the lower half of the periphery of the gasification chamber, advantageously through several nozzles and preferably separately from the material to be gasified.
One can operate, using an embodiment of the present gasifier, for example, approximately as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The coal, partly in fine grains, partly in dust, is introduced from top to bottom by the side into a cylindrical tube lined internally with refractory masonry and provided at the lower half of its periphery with several tangential nozzles for the introduction of carbonating agents. The coal is driven, as a result of the speed with which the gasifying agents are animated at their exit from each nozzle, in a circular motion. It moves with great speed, first at the periphery of the chamber, it mixes with the air or the vapor which enters by the nozzles and is gasified, especially when using previously heated air, to high temperature.
The arrangement of several nozzles in the lower half of the gasifier has the advantage that a relatively sedimented amount of low pressure wind (eg about 800 mm of water) is sufficient. The relatively large coal particles (up to the size of a walnut) thus gasify as completely as they are simultaneously crushed and finely pulverized by the rapid circular motion of the coal. The coal, gas and ash move in a spiral, gasification going on continuously, towards the center of the cylinder chamber, and the gas and powdery ash finally come out, after complete or almost complete gasification of the coal, through the orifice in the center of the side face.
If the proportion of the gasifying agents relative to the quantity of coal is regulated in such a way that there is a considerable excess of fuel in the chamber, the latter is transformed by the addition of steam to about 1000-1200 in carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The present gasifier, once in operation, can be operated at a very high rate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This gasifier can be further improved by fitting, to the outlet orifice of the chamber, an approximately horizontal pipe, the diameter of which is preferably smaller than that of the rotation chamber. The advantage is thus realized that the fuel which could escape the gasification in the chamber and come out with the gases formed and the gasification agents possibly not consumed, ends up gasifying in this attached pipe, while continuing its movement. - rotation ment. It is also possible to regulate the quantity of fuel to be gasified in such a way that in any case only incomplete gasification occurs up to the outlet port.
It is good to promote rotation and gasification in the attached pipe by introducing gasifying agents therein through orifices, for example nozzles, arranged tangentially, preferably in its lower half and distributed over its entire length. . It is also possible, if necessary, to introduce and gasify in this attached pipe new quantities of fuel.
It has also been found that this device is also eminently suitable for the carbonization of bituminous fuels, in particular lignite.
The accompanying drawings show by way of example some suitable embodiments of the new gasifier.
The gasifier according to Figure 1 consists of the gasification chamber a., Lined internally with refractory masonry. The lower half of the periphery of this chamber is provided with oblique nozzles b b1, b2 etc. for the arrival of air. At the top and laterally is the fuel inlet k and opposite it the steam injector c.
The wind pipe i supplies the air nozzles, and the con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
duit k continuously supplies fuel by means of an endless screw. The gas leaves through the orifice h made in one of the side faces of the chamber. If the gas is to be burned for heating, the combustion air is brought from the opposite side face through line n or in any other way into or near the outlet port h. The gasifier can thus serve as a burner.
The embodiment according to FIG. II differs from that represented by FIG. 1 by dividing the chamber a into two zones by means of the annular partition d, the combustion zone g and the reduction zone e. The annular partition has an opening vis-à-vis the fuel inlet through which the two zones communicate with each other. This opening is provided with a movable water-cooled valve f which can be operated from outside by a hand wheel. The purpose of this valve is to regulate combustion and gasification.
In the device according to FIG. III, intended for the carbonization of fuels, the hot gas produced in the chamber 1 and driven by a rotational movement enters through 2 into the attached pipe 3, where it continues its rotation. At the same time, the fuel to be carbonized, which comes from the bunker 4, is introduced tangentially at 5 in this pipe as close as possible to the orifice of the chamber, it is entrained by the hot gas in its rotational movement and it is thus charred. To maintain or to reinforce the rotation of the material to be carbonized over its entire path through the pipe 3, hot gas is introduced tangentially therein under a pressure of about 800 mm by nozzles 6, placed preferably halfway through. bottom of the pipe.
This gas can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
withdrawn directly from the rotation chamber at 7 and be forced by the blowing machine 9 into the nozzles 6, after having been brought back by the refrigerant 8 to the desired temperature, or one can use gases or vapors of any other origin. The quantity and temperature of the gas, as well as the quantity of material to be carbonized introduced are reciprocally regulated in such a way that it is established in the pipe 3, in which the material to be carbonized moves in the same direction as the gases, the temperature desired for carbonization, for example about 60 ° C. The length of the pipe 3 will be such that the material is completely carbonized when it leaves it.
The pipe 3 opens into a cyclone 10, in which the product of carbonization, the semi-coKe, is deposited; it can be returned from there directly, without prior cooling, to the rotation chamber 1 to be gasified there, or it can be cooled and used elsewhere.
The hot gases, charged with the gases and vapors which come from the carbonization, pass, after leaving the cyclone 10, through the dedusting device 11, where the fine dust is removed from the gas before the tar condensation.
From there they enter the refrigerant 12 and the tarter 13, where the tar is separated, after which the purified gas is directed to the place of its consumption.
The device which has just been described can also find other uses, for example for the desiccation of pulverulent or fine-grain materials by means of hot gases or as a reaction chamber for reactions between gas and pulverulent materials or in fine grain, etc.
