<EMI ID=1.1>

Sealed compressor of reduced height and incorporation
a suction tube.
Background of the invention.
The present invention relates to improvements to the stator windings of an engine and to the suction tube structure for a sealed compressor of reduced height.
Compressors for refrigerant are typically incorporated in a sealed housing. In a typical sealed compressor, a compressor pump unit is received at one end and a motor drives a shaft to operate the pump unit. The motor is sealed in the housing. A suction tube is mounted in the housing and communicates a refrigerant in a housing chamber that surrounds the engine. The suction pressure refrigerant entering the chamber cools the engine.
Typically, in the prior art, the incoming refrigerant is located at an axial location above the stator windings of the motor. Sometimes suction gas enters the housing
axially aligned with the pump unit. These locations result in compressors of undesirable length. One objective of the recent development of compressors is to reduce the height of the compressors.
A modern type compressor is a scroll compressor. In a scroll compressor, a first scroll member has a base and a generally spiral casing extending from the base which fits into a spiral casing extending from the base of a second scroll member. The second scroll element is driven by the shaft to orbit relative to the first scroll element. The nested envelopes define compression chambers of reduced volume when the second volute element moves in orbit relative to the first.
Reducing the height in a sealed compressor and, in particular, in a scroll compressor, presents challenges to the compressor designer. It would be desirable for the suction tube to be aligned with the stator of the motor and, in particular, with the windings. However, with such an arrangement, when the refrigerant is introduced through the suction tube, it is in a location which is closely adjacent to the stator windings. There may be unwanted debris, oil, or contaminants from the refrigerant that are forced into the stator windings and can damage the stator windings. This may be undesirable.
It would be desirable to increase the radial distance between the inner end of the suction tube and the radially outer location of the stator windings. However, there is little radial space in this area, since the stator windings have a necessary outside diameter which is typically relatively close to the internal diameter of the housing.
It would therefore be desirable to make changes in a sealed compressor to better facilitate alignment of the suction tube with the stator windings.
Summary of the invention.
In a described embodiment of the invention, the suction tube is placed inside the length of the stator. Even better, the suction tube is located along the length of the stator windings. Even better, a protective coating is placed over the stator windings at least at a peripheral location aligned with the suction tube of a sealed compressor. The suction tube is axially aligned with the stator windings. However, the coating protects the windings from damage by contamination agents. Although the protective coating may be of any material, it will preferably be a plastic. In addition, it will be even better a plastic Mylar .
In another feature of the invention, the suction tube is mounted at a location on the shell which is aligned with, but radially spaced from, the axial location of the stator. The housing is preferably swollen radially outward in the vicinity of the suction tube so that the inner end of the suction tube is spaced from the outer periphery of the stator by a greater distance. Most preferably, the suction tube has an internal radial lip which is wrapped in the bulge of the housing shell. In this way, the suction tube is mounted axially within the limits of the stator windings and the housing can have a reduced height.
Preferably, the stator windings are protected both by the coating and by spacing the inner end of the suction tube from the outer periphery of the windings due to the bulging of the housing towards the outside.
These characteristics and other characteristics of the invention can be better understood in the light of the following specification and drawings, a brief description of which is given below.
Brief description of the drawings.

Detailed description of a preferred embodiment.
Fig. 1 represents a scroll compressor
20 comprising an orbital scroll element 22 and a non-orbital scroll element 24. A compressor discharge 25 receives compressed refrigerant from compression chambers defined between the orbital and non-orbital scrolls 22 and 24. A central shell 26 of the housing is fixed to an upper shell 28 and a lower shell 30 to define a sealed compressor housing. A suction tube 32 extends through the central shell 36 to deliver refrigerant to a chamber 33. As can be seen, the central shell 26 has an inner wall 34 swollen outwards which receives an internal lip 38 of the suction tube 32. The radially innermost part of the internal lip 38 is located radially inside the theoretical internal surface 39 of the central shell 26.
The internal end 38 is therefore spaced at 37 from a motor winding 41, as will be explained below. A motor 40 contains the winding 41 and a rotor 42. The winding 41 is associated with a stator 43. The rotor 42 is fixed to rotate with a shaft 44 which, in turn, drives the orbital volute 22, as is known.
The invention is used in conjunction with a compressor in which the suction tube 32 extends through the housing 26 at a location such that it is at least partially aligned with the stator of the motor and, preferably, with the windings 41. The axial direction is defined along the axis of rotation of the shaft 44. In such a compressor, the increase in space 37 obtained by the bulging towards the outside of the shell 34 provides significant advantages by providing additional space for the refrigerant to flow into the chamber 33. In addition, this increases the distance between the tube 32 and the windings 41, which has the effect of reducing the probability of damage to the windings 41.
Although the suction tube 32 is shown aligned with the windings 41, it may be advantageous in certain applications to align the suction tube with the laminates.
As shown in Fig. 2, a protective coating 46 is mounted on the windings 41. As can be seen from FIG. 1, the protective coating 46 preferably extends to the two axial ends of the winding 41. As can be seen in FIG. 2, the protective coating 46 does not necessarily have to cover the entire circumference of the winding 41, but must only cover the windings 41 adjacent to the suction tube 32. The incorporation of the suction tube along the length of the stator and, more particularly, at the level of the windings allows the cooling of the motor without any baffle to direct the suction refrigerant in a particular direction.
In addition, this positioning of the suction tube makes it possible to free up more space for the welding tool of the circular joint to move in the sealed compressor during the initial assembly. The outwardly bulging shell also provides an additional flow area.
The protective coating not only protects the windings of the refrigerant during operation, but also provides protection during assembly, shipment, handling and installation of the compressor. For example, if a tool is inserted into the suction tube during installation, the protective coating will protect the winding. In addition, when the suction tube is being welded to the source of suction refrigerant, heat is applied along the suction tube. The coating can protect the winding from damage from this heat.
The protective coating may be made of any suitable material which will protect the windings 41, but will not affect the electrical characteristics of the motor 40. For example, a plastic coating which will desirably be made of a tough material to ensure a certain resistance to damage by a material which can strike the coating 46 is very desired. A suitable plastic material is a sheet material of the Mylar type. However, other plastics and even other materials can be used.
Although the coating is shown as a simple outer coating in the figures, preferably the coating is incorporated into the windings when they are initially formed. A technology is available in which additional materials can be incorporated into the windings in peripheral areas selected during the formation of the windings. In the context of the invention, when the windings are initially
<EMI ID = 1.1>
preferably laced in the windings at least near the outer periphery of the windings and at the peripheral location shown in the figure. The figures constitute a simplified illustration of the existence of the coating, but, in fact, the coating will preferably be formed as above. However, there may be applications with coatings that could simply be placed on the outer periphery, as shown.
Although the invention has been described in a scroll compressor, it is understood that the advantages of the invention would extend to other types of sealed compressors.
A preferred embodiment of the invention has been described; however, an expert in the art would recognize that certain modifications would fall within the scope of the invention. For this reason, the following claims should be studied in order to determine the true scope and content of the invention.
