<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Een praktische samenstelling voor een sterk brandwerend materiaal kan de volgende zijn: 95 vol. % geëxpandeerde kleikorrels;
1 vol. % polyurethaanschuim ;
4 vol. % grafietschilfers.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Fire-resistant material and construction element provided with such material.
This invention relates to a fire-resistant material containing an amount of non-combustible mineral material, an amount of polyurethane foam and an amount of swelling product, this is a product that forms foam under the influence of heat, which is spread in the polyurethane foam.
Such a fire-resistant material is known from Dutch patent no. 1,011,642.
This known material mainly consists of polyurethane foam to which graphite has been added as a swelling product to replace the melted-down or burnt-out polyurethane and mineral fibers have been added to maintain stability.
This known material offers good fire resistance, but offers the disadvantage that, in the event of a fire, a large amount of smoke is produced due to the large amount of polyurethane foam.
The invention has for its object to provide a fire-resistant material which does not exhibit the aforementioned drawback and in the case of fire entails virtually no smoke development and moreover offers a better fire resistance than said known material.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the non-combustible mineral material forms the main component and 60 to 96% by volume pieces of mineral light stony
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
material that is bonded to each other by the polyurethane foam, the vol. % is calculated relative to the total volume of the fire-resistant material.
The pieces of light stone-like material are preferably expanded clay pellets.
The fire-resistant material then preferably has 90 to 96 vol. expanded clay granules, 1 to 5 volume% polyurethane foam and 3 to 5 volume% of a swelling product, all vol. % are calculated relative to the total volume of the material.
The swelling product can also be graphite according to the invention, in particular in the form of chips.
The invention also relates to a structural element, in particular a wall, door or gate panel comprising two walls, at least one of which is preferably made of metal, between which the fire-resistant material is arranged, said fire-resistant material being the material described above according to the invention.
With the insight to better demonstrate the characteristics of the invention, a few preferred embodiments of a fire-resistant element and of a construction element containing such material are described below as an example without any limiting character, according to the invention.
A fire-resistant material according to the invention consists of 60 to 96 vol. % expanded clay granules bound by 40 to 4% by volume of polyurethane foam in which graphite is dispersed as a swelling product.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The graphite can be natural graphite, this is the mineral found in nature. It can be present in the form of powder or in the form of flakes, the largest dimension of which is preferably between 0.5 and 3 mm.
In the event of a fire, the graphite will swell and the foamed graphite will immediately take the place of the volume of polyurethane foam that may be burnt or melted away.
This foamed graphite then sticks to the expanded clay granules and keeps them together so that the stability of the material is retained.
The polyurethane foam can be made both on the basis of one-component and on the basis of two-component urethane.
The expanded clay granules preferably have a specific weight of approximately 350 kg / m3.
A suitable material for obtaining the usual fire resistance comprises 90 to 96 volume% expanded clay granules, 1 to 5 volume% polyurethane foam and 3 to 5 volume. % graphite.
A practical composition for a strong fire-resistant material can be the following: 95 vol. % expanded clay pellets;
1 vol. % polyurethane foam;
4 vol. % graphite chips.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The fire-resistant material described above can be manufactured by mixing expanded clay granules, monomeric or pre-polymeric urethane, and thus in non-foamed form and the swelling product, and then having the urethane polymerized and foam up.
Graphite and mineral expanded clay pellets are relatively inexpensive so that the material is relatively inexpensive. It offers excellent fire resistance with little smoke development in the event of a fire and is therefore particularly suitable for use as the core of fire-resistant panels such as panels for doors, gates and walls.
The material is applied as a core between two panels, whereby at least the panel on the fire-hazardous side is generally made of metal. In the event of a fire, this panel will bulge towards the fire. The space that is thereby released between the core and this panel is immediately filled with swelling agent.
Hence, the amount of swelling product in the material is usually greater than necessary to replace the polyurethane foam in the event of a fire. The swelling product must therefore be able to produce a larger volume of foam on swelling than the volume of polyurethane foam present in the material.
The light mineral material does not necessarily have to consist of expanded clay pellets. It can also consist of pieces of other mineral light rocks, such as natural light rocks such as pumice.

The present invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiments and such method and such fire-resistant plastic foam can be realized in various variants without falling outside the scope of the invention.
