<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Method and device for cooling air. This invention relates to a method and device for cooling air.
More specifically, it aims at a method with which efficient cooling can be realized.
To this end the invention relates to a method for cooling air, characterized in that this cooling is achieved at least by guiding the air to be cooled through a first channel of a heat exchanger, while in a second channel of this heat exchanger an evaporation is realized by the to moisten the walls of this second channel and thereby direct an air flow through the second channel.
Preferably, at least a portion of the second air stream is cooled here before it is introduced into the second channel. As a result, the second air stream can absorb more moisture, making a larger cooling capacity possible.
In practice, it is preferable that the second air flow is cooled at least partially by branching it off from the first air flow.
According to a special embodiment, use is made of a second air flow consisting of two or more partial flows that are supplied at different locations in the second channel. In this way it is prevented that the air in the second channelization shows too high a humidity too quickly and consequently little
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
can absorb additional moisture for the realization of the evaporation. By providing intermediate fresh air in the second channelization, a better evaporation effect is thus obtained.
In a practical embodiment, several sub-streams are systematically branched out at different successive places of the first channel.
Furthermore, it is also preferred that the second air flow is allowed to run essentially parallel to the first, this in counterflow, whereby the second air flow can easily be tapped off from the first.
In a special embodiment, for the second air flow use is made of at least two partial flows which are preferably separated from each other, respectively a first partial flow that is tapped before or near the entrance of the first channel and which effects a cooling effect in a first part of the first channelization, and a second sub-stream, which can also consist of several sub-streams, this second sub-stream being tapped from the second part of the first channel and / or at the output thereof and being used to create a cooling effect in the second part of the first channel. This makes it possible to strive for optimum cooling, whereby a cooling up to the wet bulb temperature is pursued in the first partial stream, while dew point cooling takes place in the second section.
According to yet another special feature of the invention, the cooling is carried out in a plate heat exchanger and at least a part of the second air stream is discharged from the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
first branched via direct connections between the compartments formed between the plates, this by means of passages in the plates and / or a common space at the edge of the plates into which both compartments issue. As a result, the air cooled in the first channel directly ends up in the second channel, so that heating of the second air stream before it enters the second channel is excluded. In addition, the use of two different collectors is excluded on at least one side of the plate heat exchanger.
Another improvement of the invention consists in that the aforementioned cooling is combined by means of the aforementioned heat exchanger with a so-called mechanical cooling, more particularly a compression cooling, wherein this mechanical cooling is preferably controlled as a function of external parameters. By correct control it can hereby be achieved that not only the temperature of the air can be kept at the desired value, but also the humidity, without, however, a special intervention having to be carried out to control the humidification. The aforementioned two refrigerations complement each other.
The compression cooling is preferably switched on to a greater extent as the moisture of the incoming air increases. After all, as the humidity increases, the efficiency of the cooling in the heat exchanger decreases and this can ideally be absorbed by putting the mechanical cooling into operation. When the atmospheric humidity becomes low, the aforementioned heat exchanger using the dew point cooling optimally yields and the mechanical cooling can be limited or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
excluded, which in turn has the advantage that the air supplied is not dehydrated unnecessarily in the mechanical cooling and consequently an air that is too dry is automatically excluded.
It is preferable to work with several compressors, preferably with a different nominal power, whereby, as greater or smaller compression cooling is desired, one or more of these compressors are switched on and off respectively.
More specifically, one or more compressors with a controllable power will be used, preferably with the aid of a frequency control.
By means of the above-described techniques, the capacity of the mechanical cooling can be systematically adjusted in function of the need for this.
The invention also relates to a device for realizing the aforementioned method, which is characterized in that it comprises at least a heat exchanger with a first channel for the air to be cooled and a second channel; means for wetting the walls of the second channel; and means for passing the air to be cooled through the first channel, as well as passing an air flow through the second channel.
Specific details of preferred embodiments of this device are described in the subclaims, as well as set forth in the detailed description below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
With the insight to better demonstrate the characteristics of the invention, a few preferred embodiments of a device according to the invention are described below as an example without any limiting character, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 schematically shows the device according to the invention ; figure 2 schematically represents a more practical structure to the device of figure 1; figures 3 to 8 schematically represent different variants of the device according to the invention; Figures 9 to 14 show a number of special details that can be used in the device according to the invention.
As shown diagrammatically in Figure 1, the device 1 according to the invention consists at least of a heat exchanger 2 with a first channel 3 and a second channel 4; means 5 for wetting the walls 6 of the second channel 4; and means (not shown) for passing the air to be cooled in the form of a first air flow 7 through the first channel 3, as well as a second air flow 8 through the second channel 4.
In the example shown, the second air stream 8 is here tapped from the first air stream 7 after the latter has left the heat exchanger 2.
The means 5 for wetting the walls 6 can be of any nature, but preferably, as shown in Figure 1, contain a supply 9 for liquid, more particularly water, which is distributed over the walls 6 by
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by means of a sprayer or the like. As still shown, these means 5 preferably, but not necessarily, also comprise a moisture-absorbing layer 10 applied to the walls 6 to disperse the moisture.
The operation of this device 1 is based on the fact that the moisture on the walls 6 is evaporated and discharged by means of the second air stream 8. This causes the walls 6 to cool, which also causes a cooling effect in the first channel 3, so that the air flow 7 is cooled. Because the air stream 8 is branched off from the air stream 7, it is relatively cold and can therefore absorb an optimum amount of moisture.
As shown in Figure 2, a plate heat exchanger is preferably used to obtain an optimum heat transfer, the first channel 3 being formed by compartments 11 and the second channel 4 being formed by compartments 12.
The aforementioned layer 10 is hereby arranged on the outside of the wall of the compartments 11.
As shown in Figure 2, parallel air flows 7 and 8 are preferably used. It is clear that in practice the incoming air flow 7 and outgoing air flow 8 are kept separate from each other.
According to the embodiments of figures 3 and 4, the second channel 4 is directly branched from the first channel 3, i.e. without using a special connecting line.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
This direct connection in this case consists of a chamber 13 which is located immediately behind the plates of the plate heat exchanger 2, into which the first channel 3 flows, and the second channel 4 starts. The second air stream 8 is hereby, as indicated by reference 14, immediately bent over from the first air stream 7.
Figure 3 also shows that the aforementioned means for creating the air flows 7 and 8 may consist of fans 15 and 16, the fan 15 providing the suction of the global air flow, while the fan 16 ensures that the air flow 8 is extracted from the first air stream 7.
Provided that the device 1 is appropriately dimensioned, a fan 17 can also suffice, which, as shown in Figure 4, presses the air necessary for the air flows 7 and 8 through the device 1.
According to Figure 5, the second air flow 8 from the first channel 4 is tapped by means of at least two taps, in this case different taps 14A, which are located at different places in the first channel 3 in the direction of flow. A second air flow 8 is hereby obtained which is composed of different subflows 8A, whereby the branched-out still relatively dry air is better distributed in the second channel 4 and can absorb moisture more optimally.
It is noted that the principle of Figure 5 is not necessarily limited to parallel channels 3 and 4, but, as shown diagrammatically in Figure 6,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
can be used in a device 1 in which cross-channeled channels 3-4 are used.
Figure 7 schematically shows another variant in which for the second air flow 8 use is made of at least two partial flows 8B and 8C which are preferably separated from each other, respectively a first partial flow 8B which is branched off before or near the entrance of the first channel 3 and which produces a cooling effect in a first portion 18 of the first channel 3, and a second sub-stream 8C, wherein this second sub-stream 8C is tapped from the second portion 19 of the first channel 3 and / or at its output and is used for creating a cooling effect in the second part 19 of the first channel 3. This results in the advantages of this specific embodiment mentioned in the introduction.
It is noted that the subflow 8C can also consist of different subflows, similar to the subflows 8A in Figure 5.
Figure 8 schematically shows a special embodiment in which, in addition to the aforementioned heat exchanger 2, a so-called mechanical cooling 20 with at least one compressor, but preferably two or more compressors, respectively 21 and 22, is used, as well as a control 23 which controls mechanical cooling 20 controls in function of external parameters, such as humidity.
As stated in the introduction, this combined device 1, in other words the combination of a cooling by means of a heat exchanger 2 as described above and a mechanical cooling 20, allows to always search for the most optimal combination.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The two compressors 21-22 have a different nominal capacity. Moreover, the control 23 also comprises a control for continuously controlling the power of the compressors, for example by means of a frequency control.
It is hereby obtained that at the moment that only a small mechanical cooling is required, only the smallest compressor 21 is put into operation. At a larger desired power, only the larger compressor 22 is put into operation. At an even greater desired power, both compressors 21 and 22 are put into operation in parallel.
A frequency control can be used for the stepless control.
The mechanical cooling or compression cooling can be realized with different types of compressors 21-22, both piston compressors and screw compressors.
Figures 9 to 14 relate to a special detail that can be applied in the device 1, with which a remarkable improvement can be realized in the case that a moisture-absorbing and / or hygroscopic layer 10 is applied. This improvement consists in that additional means 24 are provided at the location of this layer 10 which favor the distribution of the moisture in the aforementioned layer 10.
These means 24 are preferably embodied such that they provide a buffering action, in other words the moisture running down through the layer 10 more or less
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
collection and / or deceleration and thus promote a better distribution through absorption.
According to figures 9 and 10, these means 24 consist of substantially horizontal frames 25 which cooperate with the aforementioned walls 6, more particularly the aforementioned layer 10, and in particular are attached to this. Hereby it is obtained that the moisture stream 26, more particularly the water that runs down through the layer 10, is more or less braked and forms an amount of liquid 27 on the frames 25, which is then spread back through the absorption. The excess liquid runs over the edge of the respective frame 25 to the next frame and also partially penetrates behind the frame 25 through the layer 10. In this way dry spots are obtained in the layer 10.
Figures 11 and 12 show a variant in which the frames 25 are provided with obliquely directed passages 28. Water droplets 29 remain suspended therein, in such a way that even distribution is promoted again. The water drops 29 also form a horizontal guide for the air flow 8.
Figure 13 shows an embodiment in which the frames 25 extend over the full width of the channel 4, but where passages 30 are formed in these frames.
As shown in Fig. 14, however, it is not excluded that the frames 25 can be completely closed, such that on each frame 25 a quantity of liquid 27 can form which can then penetrate further down the layer 10. Thus, at every level where a list is present, a redistribution is made
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
of the liquid over the total length of the second channel 4.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiments described by way of example and shown in the figures, but such a method and device can be implemented according to different variants, without departing from the scope of the invention.
