<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Figuur 1 schematisch een horizontale doorsnede weergeeft doorheen een matras volgens de uitvinding ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Wanneer men figuur 1 beschouwt, kan men daarin in totaal 23 dwarsrijen met veren of latex blokjes aantreffen.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Mattress with feather core".
The present invention relates to a mattress with an upper and a lower plate of a flexible material, in particular of foam material, and with wooden coil springs arranged between this upper and lower plate.
Such a mattress is known from EP-B-0 694 272, DE-A-195 33 698 and DE-U-296 12 307. Rattan springs are used in each of the known mattresses. A disadvantage of these springs is that they are relatively subject to fatigue resulting in height and / or hardness loss. This means that after a certain time, the most stressed areas of the mattress, more particularly in the shoulder zone and especially in the middle of the mattress, in the pelvic zone, will form pits. To remedy this, DE-U-296 12 307 proposes a special design for the rattan springs, more specifically a double-conical shape, the smallest diameter of the spring being in the middle. However, this design has still not proved to be sufficiently effective to prevent pitting.
Moreover, rattan is a natural material whose properties, in particular the spring properties, are difficult to control such that they can vary within wide limits. All this has an impact on the comfort properties of the mattress.
The invention now has for its object to propose a mattress with a core of wooden springs, in particular a rattan spring core, which is less susceptible to fatigue than the known mattresses with rattan cores.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
For this purpose the mattress according to the invention is characterized in that at least in a more heavily loaded zone of the mattress at least one piece of latex foam is provided between said wooden springs.
In comparison with rattan springs, latex foam offers the advantage that it has better comfort properties and, above all, a large form-recovering capacity. By applying such latex foam in the more heavily loaded zone or zones, in particular in the pelvic and shoulder zones, the durability and the feeling of comfort of the mattress are improved. In the zones where the latex foam pieces are applied, the rattan springs can be placed further apart so that the hardness of the mattress in these zones would not become too great. In practice, an important advantage of rattan feather mattresses is that they can be produced completely ecologically and naturally.
Due to the special choice of latex foam, preferably substantially 100% natural latex, in the mattress according to the invention, this important advantage is not compromised and the mattress therefore continues to produce ecologically and naturally.
In the mattress according to the invention, said piece of latex foam can extend substantially from one longitudinal side of the mattress to the other longitudinal side thereof. In a preferred embodiment of the mattress according to the invention, however, a plurality of latex foam blocks are arranged in the more heavily loaded zone of the mattress between the wooden springs, wherein the wooden springs and the foam blocks are preferably arranged in interconnected bags. In this way a so-called pouch feather mattress is obtained with a better point elasticity and therefore also a better feeling of comfort.

Further advantages and details of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the mattress according to the invention. However, this description is only given as an example and is not intended to limit the scope of protection as defined by the claims.
The reference numerals given in the description relate to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 schematically represents a horizontal section through a mattress according to the invention;
Figure 2 schematically represents a vertical section according to line 11-11 in Figure 1, for the sake of clarity the bags around the springs were not shown; and
Figure 3 shows a detail of the right-hand end of the section according to Figure 2, again not showing the pockets around the springs for the sake of clarity.
The mattress according to the invention shown in the figures first comprises an upper 1 and a lower plate 2 of a flexible material. This flexible material can be a foam material, a fibrous material such as coconut or a combination of both. The foam material of the upper and lower plate is preferably a latex foam, in particular substantially 100% natural latex, such that a completely natural and ecologically manufactured mattress is obtained. At the edges of the mattress, beams 3 are provided with the same material as the upper 1 and the lower plate 2. In the embodiment according to Figure 3, these beams 3 consist of a middle layer 4 of latex foam on which a layer of coconut 5 is applied at the top and bottom.
In view of their greater hardness, these coconut layers 5 are intended to reinforce the edges of the mattress.
They can possibly cover the entire surface of the mattress
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and thus form part of the upper plate 1 and the lower plate 2.
Between the upper 1 and the lower plate 2 wooden spiral springs 6 are arranged within the frame formed by the beams 3, in particular rattan springs, although other types of wood, such as willow for example, could also be used. These springs 6 can, for example, be held in place by providing a top and bottom reinforcement grid made of slats as described in EP-B-0694272. An analogous reinforcement lattice can be obtained by allowing the coconut layers 5 to run over the entire surface of the mattress. The springs can then be fixed in holes in the coconut layers 5 and / or be tied to the coconut layers 5 by means of wires.
Preferably, the rattan springs 6, as will be described further below, are held in place by a reinforcing grid of attached bags.
According to the invention, it is essential that at least one more heavily loaded zone of the mattress be provided with at least one piece of latex foam between the wooden springs. The more heavily loaded zones of the mattress are mainly the pelvic zone in the middle of the mattress and the shoulder zone or zones more towards the ends of the mattress. The most important advantage of applying one or more pieces of latex foam in these zones is that it considerably increases the durability of the mattress and more particularly prevents pit formation.
The feeling of comfort of the mattress is also favorably influenced by the latex foam. In order to maintain the same hardness in the zones where the latex foam is applied, the springs 6 must of course be placed further apart in this zone.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the simplest embodiment of the mattress according to the invention, one or more beam-shaped pieces of latex foam can be provided between the springs 6, which extend over the full width of the mattress between the longitudinal beams 3. This embodiment was not shown in the figures. According to the invention, it is after all preferred to place smaller pieces or blocks of latex foam 7 between the springs 6. These blocks 7 can in particular be cylindrical or double conical with, for example, approximately the same dimensions as the springs 6 such that a number of springs can be replaced by such foam blocks 7. For attaching the foam blocks 7, they can for instance be glued down to the upper 1 and the lower plate 2.
In the preferred embodiment shown in the figures, the latex blocks or cylinders 7 such as the rattan springs 6 are each arranged in strips of interconnected bags such that a bag spring mattress is obtained with improved comfort properties and in particular with an improved point elasticity.
According to the known techniques, the strips of bags can for instance be glued together or sewn together. According to the invention, however, preference is given to the use of longitudinal strips 8 and transverse strips 9 of interconnected bags. Gaps are then provided between the pockets of the longitudinal strips 8 such that the transverse strips 9 can be braided into these longitudinal strips 8.
Conversely, the transverse strips 9 could also be provided with slits such that the longitudinal strips 8 can be braided into these transverse strips 9. This technique is described in detail in, inter alia, EP-B-0 545 956.
According to Figure 1, for example, eleven transverse strips 9 of bags are inserted into five longitudinal strips 8, but it is clear that
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
these numbers can vary depending on the dimensions of the mattress and the springs 6. In Figure 1 the bags of the longitudinal strips 8 are completely filled with rattan springs 6. The bags of a number of transverse strips 9 are also filled with rattan springs 6, but a further number of these transverse strips 9 are filled with latex blocks 7. In particular, starting from the head end of the mattress, the second and third transverse strips, the fifth, sixth and seventh transverse strips and the ninth and tenth transverse strips are filled with latex blocks in Figure 1.
These strips filled with latex blocks are thus located in the shoulder zone, the pelvis zone and in the zone symmetrically located. o. the shoulder zone, d. w. z. in again in the shoulder zone in case the mattress is turned. Optionally, only one and two strips filled with latex blocks could be provided in the shoulder zone and the pelvic zone, respectively.
Considering figure 1, a total of 23 cross rows with springs or latex blocks can be found therein. Because no latex blocks are provided in the longitudinal strips, the transverse rows of bags filled with latex blocks are in each case separated by at least one transverse row of bags filled with rattan springs. To avoid this, it is also possible to apply 8 latex blocks in certain bags of the longitudinal strips, but this makes the production process more complex. Moreover, it is preferable to preserve the resilient effect of the rattan springs also in the more heavily loaded areas.
At least one transverse strip filled with rattan springs is preferably arranged between the more heavily loaded zones, such that at least in each case at least three rows of bags filled with rattan springs are preferably present. This is for example the case in the embodiment according to figure 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Different hardnesses of latex foam can be used to adjust the hardness of the mattress in the more heavily loaded zone or zones. On the other hand, placing the latex blocks in bags offers the advantage that the latex blocks can be placed in the bags under a bias, d. w. z. in partially compressed state, such that the hardness of these blocks is increased.
Finally, it should be noted that in the transverse strips 9 filled with latex blocks, not all bags with such blocks need to be filled. For example, in Figure 1 one might consider filling only the five middle bags with latex blocks and the bags with rattan springs located on the longitudinal edges of the mattress. After all, the mattress is generally loaded less on the longitudinal edges than in the middle.
From the description given above, it will be clear that the invention is by no means limited to the described embodiments and that all kinds of changes can be made to it insofar as they fall within the scope of protection of the appended claims.
