"DRAAGELEMENT"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Hierbij vermijdt men tevens ingewikkelde hot-runner systemen in de matrijzen.

"CARRYING ELEMENT"
The present invention relates to a support element mainly made of plastic, comprising an upper deck, an intermediate section located below the upper deck, which is welded to the upper deck, and a base provided below the intermediate section.
More specifically, the present invention relates to a palette having the features indicated above. Palettes are mainly used for stacking and / or moving goods. In conditions where hygiene is of great importance, such as in the food industry, pallets are mainly made of plastic and the surface of which is almost completely closed, in order to minimize the number of hard-to-reach places where dirt can adhere to limit. Such pallets can be cleaned very easily and very thoroughly, both in automatic car washes and with high-pressure cleaners.
There are pallets with a hollow supporting plate, to which a frame is welded. The hollow supporting plate and the legs have been manufactured as separate parts by injection molding and then joined together by thermal welding. Only a single welding operation is required to manufacture these pallets.
A drawback of these known palettes is, however, that the hollow supporting plate does not offer sufficient rigidity. Moreover, the fact that the palette is composed of only two parts also results in a number of limitations with regard to its design. For example, certain roundings cannot be realized, and certain chamfers can only be realized with complex molds. The leg set includes legs
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which are connected at the bottom by connecting battens and at the top by a plate. In order to realize such a shape with a closed recess (between the legs, the plate, and the connecting slats), the mold must comprise laterally slide-in parts. Such molds are complex and expensive.
This makes it compulsory to spray products which, among other things because of the firmness of the palette, must show large thickness differences. This results in relatively long cycle times, and pieces, different parts of which exhibit different shrink behavior, with the result that these pieces start to deform.
There are also pallets that are composed of a hollow supporting plate welded to a frame, in which a rib structure is provided. In order to realize this internal rib structure, the support plate must be made of two parts. An upper plate-shaped portion with a substantially flat top surface and downwardly facing ribs on the bottom (an upper deck), and a lower plate-shaped portion with upwardly facing ribs on the top (an intermediate portion). These two parts are welded together. Each rib of the top section is welded to a rib of the bottom section. Both parts join together in such a way that they form a fully closed hollow supporting plate with an internal rib structure.
The palette thus formed offers sufficient rigidity due to the rib structure in the support plate. However, a drawback is that two welding operations are required to produce this palette: During an initial welding operation, the top and bottom parts of the support plate are welded together. During a second welding operation, the legs are welded to the support plate. This last welding operation must be performed in a hard to reach place.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The production of this palette is therefore a time-consuming and difficult process.
The object of the present invention is to provide a support element with the features indicated in the first paragraph of this description, which can be manufactured according to a method which is simpler and less time-consuming than the method described in the previous paragraph, yet which offers sufficient rigidity , and that can be done with a closed surface.
This object is achieved by providing such a support member, with a base comprising at least one projection, which extends through a passage in the intermediate section to the upper deck, where it is welded to the upper deck, while the weld joint of the upper deck and the intermediate section and the welded connection of the upper deck and said protrusion are provided at substantially the same level.
The top deck, the intermediate section and the base of the support element can be joined together during the same welding operation. The support element can thus be manufactured in a simple and quick manner. In addition, the carrier plate is made in two parts (an upper deck and an intermediate section provided underneath) so that it can be provided with enclosed reinforcing means, such as, for example, a rib structure. The supporting element according to the invention can therefore be designed in such a way that it offers sufficient rigidity on the one hand and a closed surface on the other.
In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the base comprises at least a pair of two spaced opposing wings, each passage in the intermediate section being provided between two spaced opposing walls of this intermediate section, and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
said wings of each pair, next to a respective wall of the intermediate section, extend through a passage to the upper deck, and are joined to the upper deck by a welded connection.
This results in double-walled parts, which further increases the stiffness and strength (including the resistance to impact and shock) of the supporting element.
Preferably ribs are provided on the underside of the upper deck, while each wing of the base is welded to a respective rib.
In a highly preferred embodiment, each wing of the base is welded together with an adjacent wall of the intermediate portion to a rib of the upper deck.
A very sturdy supporting element with a particularly high rigidity is obtained if the upper deck and the intermediate section enclose at least one hollow space, while both the upper deck and the intermediate section are provided with ribs extending in the hollow space, and ribs of the intermediate section on a respective rib of the upper deck are welded.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the support element comprises at least one hollow leg, while each pair of wings of the base and the respective walls of the intermediate section extending next to these wings form the double side walls of a leg. This provides legs with a very high resistance to impact and shock.
Preferably, several hollow legs are provided, and the hollow space of each leg at the top and bottom is closed by part of the upper deck, or part of the base, respectively, while neighboring legs are connected at the bottom by a connecting slat forming part from the base.
In its most preferred embodiment
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the support element according to the present invention is designed as a palette with an almost completely closed surface. Such a palette is very easy and thorough to clean and is therefore especially suitable for use in conditions where hygiene is important.
This invention is further illustrated in the following non-limiting description of a possible embodiment of a plastic-made palette according to this invention.
In this description reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section of the individual parts of the pallet. Figure 2 represents a vertical cross-section of the pallet obtained by assembling the parts of Figure 1.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the palette according to this invention is composed of three different parts (see figure
EMI5.1
1), each of which is manufactured separately from a thermoplastic (HDPE, PP, both homo and copolymers), polycarbonates, or polyesters, which are injection molded, in both low and high pressure processes, by compression molding or by compression injection molding can be processed into moldings.
The raw materials used can be of primary or recycled origin.
These three parts are: - An upper deck (1), which comprises a completely closed, almost flat rectangular plate (2), the top of which is smooth, or is provided with relief to ensure stable stacking and / or good positioning of insure the goods on this top, while perpendicular to the bottom of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
plate (2), ribs (3), (4), (5) are provided. A downwardly facing rib (3) is provided on each of the four edges of the plate (2). These ribs (3) connect to each other at the corners of the plate (2). On the underside of the plate (2) there are zones where a number of adjacent ribs (4), (5) are provided parallel to the ribs (3) of two opposite edges of the plate (2).
All ribs (3), (4), (5) extend to the same level (indicated by the dashed line in fig. 1) below the bottom of the plate (2). There are ribs (4) of the same thickness as the ribs (3) located on the edge of the plate (2) (hereinafter referred to as "thick ribs" (3), (4), and there are ribs (5 ) of a smaller thickness (hereinafter referred to as "thin ribs" (5)).
A rectangular intermediate section (6), consisting of a completely closed flat plate (7) with ribs (8) on the upper side of the same thickness as the thin ribs (5) of the upper deck (1), and with vertical passages (9) which are bounded laterally by parallel vertical walls (10). The vertical walls (10) and the ribs (8) extend to the same level (indicated by the dashed line in Fig. 1) above the top of the plate (7) of the intermediate section (6) and have the same thickness.
A rectangular leg frame (11), consisting of several leg structures (12) that are connected at the bottom by connecting slats (13). Each leg structure (12) includes two parallel vertical walls (14) joined together at the bottom by a closed horizontal bottom surface (15).
The top deck (1) and the intermediate section (6) are furthermore designed in such a way that these parts (1), (6) can be placed on top of each other in a position where each wall (10) of the intermediate section (6) is an extension of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a thick rib (3), (4) is from the top deck (1), and each rib (8) from the intermediate section (6) is aligned with a thin rib (5) from the top deck (1) (see figure 2).
The leg assembly (11) is furthermore also designed in such a way that each pair of parallel walls (14) of a leg structure with very small play fits into a passage (9) between parallel walls (10) of the intermediate section (6), and that the top edges of the walls (10) of the intermediate section (6) and the upper edges of the walls (14) of the leg frame (11) are approximately at the same level as the leg frame (11) and the intermediate part (6) are joined together ( see figure 2).
The separately formed parts (1), (6), (11) are joined together by first sliding each leg structure (12) of the leg assembly (11) into a respective passage (9) of the intermediate section (6) , and then welding the top deck (1) on top of this combination of leg assembly (11) and intermediate section (6).
The hollow space (18) of each leg (17) is closed at the top by the top deck (1) and at the bottom by a bottom surface (15).
Since the parallel walls (14) of each leg structure (12) are between two walls (10) of the intermediate section (6), particularly sturdy double-walled legs (17) are obtained with a very good resistance to impact or shock.
Since the top edges of the walls (10) of the intermediate section (6) and of the walls (14) of the legs (11) are almost at the same level, the palette can be joined during a welding operation on the dashed line indicated in figure 2. Each wall (10) of the intermediate section (6) is thereby joined with a wall adjoining it
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
(14) of the legs (11) welded to a thick rib (4) of the top deck (1). Each rib (8) of the intermediate section (6) is welded to a thin rib (5) of the upper deck during the same welding operation. The top deck (1) and the intermediate section (6) thus enclose hollow spaces (16) with an internal rib structure (5), (8).
The thickness of the thick rib (4) almost corresponds to the thickness of the two adjoining walls (10), (14) which are welded to that rib (4) (as an extension thereof).
The welds can be accomplished by mirror welding, vibration welding or ultrasonic welding.
If desired, a seal can be provided between adjoining parts of the intermediate section (5) and the legs (11).
A pallet is obtained which has sufficient rigidity due to the rib structure in the hollow space (16) enclosed by the upper deck (1) and the intermediate section (6), which is suitable for use in conditions where hygiene is important because it has a completely closed surface , which has good shock and impact resistance due to the double-walled legs, and which can be manufactured in a particularly simple and fast production process.
However, a complicated design can be obtained by using simple molds (open-close, without laterally retractable parts). As a result, the mold costs can be kept low, and short cycle times can be used).
By working in three parts, you can choose the optimal wall thicknesses and roundings in the different parts.
On machines of sufficient size
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
plate surface, and shot weight, the different parts can be realized in 1 shot. This is, for example, extremely suitable for processing on low-pressure injection molding machines with structural foam. Complex hot-runner systems in the molds are also avoided.
Special attention can be paid to the design of the connecting slats between the legs, in function of hygiene, strength, behavior on roller conveyors, etc.
Depending on the desired properties, it is possible to choose a different composition of the plastic for the various parts.
Additional sealing rings can be provided for pallets that must meet the highest hygiene requirements.
