<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Method for improving the performance of a catalyst and catalytic reactor with improved performance.
This invention relates to a method for improving the performance of a catalyst of the type consisting of one or more elements formed from a substrate forming channels or passages and an active material applied to this substrate.
Such catalysts are used, inter alia, for the neutralization of toxic components in flue gases from combustion plants, for example for the reduction of NO and NO2 using NH3 at temperatures below the normal reaction temperature of 850 to 900 C.
Catalyst elements arranged after a filter often have a beehive structure with very narrow passages, while catalyst elements arranged before a filter have a plate structure with a slightly greater distance between the plates.
The catalyst elements are bundled together into modules and usually arranged in several layers in a vertical reactor.
The gases to be reacted, for example the combustion gases and injected ammonia gases, flow more or less laminarly through the catalyst elements where they react.
The reaction rate depends on the residence time of the gases in the catalyst elements which is inversely proportional to the rate and thus the flow rate of the gases through the catalyst elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In order to allow the greatest possible flow rate of the gases, the catalyst elements are run for a relatively long time with narrow passages in order to obtain the largest possible area of active substance. In practice, however, several layers of catalyst elements must be placed one after the other to ensure sufficient catalyst action.
In addition, the catalyst elements get clogged up quite quickly due to precipitation of dust in the channels. They need to be replaced or cleaned relatively quickly.
Due to section and direction changes of the gas flow, it will be unevenly distributed among the catalyst elements and cover certain areas more than others. In places with less flow, the catalyst effect will also be less. Manifolds or vanes can only partially solve this problem.
For this reason, the catalyst elements are often oversized.
In the case of the purification of flue gases by ammonia gas, an excess of ammonia gas is often used for the same reason, creating the risk of poisoning the catalyst.
The object of the invention is a method for improving the catalytic action which solves the aforementioned and other problems, and thus allows a maximum of the gases to undergo the desired reaction with a minimum of catalyst.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This object is achieved according to the invention in that low-frequency sound waves are spread in the channels or passages of the catalyst elements.
Low-frequency or infrasonic sound waves are waves with a frequency below 20 Hz. Such waves are very energetic and propagate evenly in all directions from the source. They are reflected by walls practically without loss and propagate very well in spaces such as the channels or passages of the catalyst elements.
The invention also relates to a catalytic reactor provided with one or more catalyst elements which are formed from a substrate that forms channels or passages and from an active material applied to this substrate, wherein, with a view to the application of the above-mentioned method, this reactor has at least has one source of low-frequency sound waves for propagating such waves in the channels or passages of the catalyst elements.
With the insight to better demonstrate the features of the invention, an exemplary embodiment of a method for improving the performance of a catalyst and of a catalytic reactor with improved performance, according to the invention, is shown below, by way of example without any limiting character. with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 schematically represents a catalytic reactor according to the invention; figure 2 shows in perspective a module of the catalyst from the reactor of figure 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The catalytic reactor shown in the figure is a reactor for neutralizing the flue gases from an incinerator using ammonia.
This reactor contains an upright housing 1 to which an inlet channel 2 is connected at the top and an outlet channel 3 at the bottom.
In the inlet channel 2, an injection device 4 for ammonia gas is arranged, which is connected by means of a pipe 5 to a storage tank 6 of ammonia.
In the housing, the catalyst is arranged in several horizontal layers 7, in the example given.
Each layer 7 extends over the entire transverse cross-section of the reactor and consists of a number of modules placed against each other, which in turn consist of a number of elongated catalyst elements 8.
Each catalyst element 8 consists of a substrate which is coated with active catalytic material and which forms a number of vertical channels 9 or passages as shown in figure 2.
For purification of combustion gases or more specifically the neutralization of nitrogen oxides with ammonia, the so-called NO reduction, the substrate can be made of titanium and the active material can be a mixture of vanadium pentoxide and tungsten trioxide.
As shown, the catalyst elements 8 can be so-called plate elements, wherein the channels 9 have a flat elongated cross-section. They can, however
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
have channels with a different cross-section and, for example, have a so-called beehive structure.
At least one source 10 of low-frequency sound waves with a frequency of less than 20 Hz or infrasound, which can spread such waves in channels 9, is arranged in the reactor.
The optimal localization of this source 10 is calculated in function of the geometry of the reactor. Depending on the case, it can be located above, between or below the horizontal layers 7 with catalyst elements 8.
As shown, this source 10 can be directed directly at channels 9, but it can also be directed at a reflective wall such as, for example, a part of the housing 1 of the reactor.
In the example shown, a source 10 is arranged above the top layer 7.
One or more additional sources 10 of low-frequency sound waves may be arranged above or below the bottom layer 7.
For example, the source 10 is mounted in a housing mounted on the housing 1 of the reactor.
This source 10 can be structurally analogous to a loudspeaker and generate the low-frequency waves electromagnetically. She can also generate these waves mechanically with a piston-cylinder mechanism or pneumatically.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In all these cases, the source 10 can generate the waves in a quarter-wavelength resonator, the length of which is adjustable or not to produce a continuously variable frequency.
During operation, low-frequency sound waves are propagated in channels 9 or passages by source 10 or sources 10.
Due to these low-frequency waves, the gases in these channels 9 or passages will be subject to a low-frequency pressure change, causing them to pulsate back and forth and thus remain longer in the catalyst or travel longer in the catalyst than if they flow straight ahead.
The low-frequency sound waves promote the turbulence of the gases to be reacted with each other, these are the combustion gases and the ammonia gases, in the channels 9, so that they mix better with each other and a longer contact time of these gases in the presence of the catalyst is obtained.
The active surface of the catalyst is better utilized.
The catalyst action is therefore positively influenced.
As a result, the amount of catalyst can be reduced, and the better neutralization of the flue gases can also reduce the amount of ammonia.
The sound waves also prevent the deposition of dust or the like on the walls of the channels 9 or passages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Although catalytic purification of combustion gases is an interesting application of the invention, it is also applicable to other catalytic reactions using a catalyst containing channels or passages for the gases to be reacted.
Naturally, other catalysts with, for example, a substrate and / or another active material can be used.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiment described above and shown in the figures, but such a method and reactor can be realized in different variants without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example, the number of layers 7 of the catalyst should not necessarily be equal to two. These layers should not necessarily be built up from modules either.
Not only can the shape of the channels or passages be changed, but the catalyst may also contain another active material and / or a different substrate.
