<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improved ground electrode for spark plug.
The invention relates to a spark plug for an internal combustion engine and relates more particularly to the mass electrode constituting such a spark plug.
Generally the ground electrode is in the form of a rod of rectangular section projecting from one side of the annular mass forming threaded base of the spark plug, curved, in the shape of an L, towards the axis of the spark plug. approach at an appropriate interval above the central electrode generally concentric with said axis.
This rod is most often of rectangular cross section. The electrode is grounded through the threaded base that attaches to the engine.
It is known to vary the shape and configuration of the ground electrode in order to obtain an effect on the electrical spark and / or the ignition and / or the movement or the turbulence of the gases in the cylinder of the engine.
Ground electrodes of complex shape and / or configuration have thus been proposed, eg. e. annular around the central electrode, or having holes, slots or grooves or even having several branches. A candle has also been proposed comprising several L-shaped electrodes,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
torsionally deformed in the form of a helix. This latter particular configuration would make it possible to obtain a favorable turbulence effect.
The present invention provides an improved ground electrode for an internal combustion engine, characterized in that it has, in cross section, a slender and aerodynamic profile relative to the side of the cylinder opposite the spark plug.
The proposed shape would thus be capable of causing a laminar flow of gas, during the compression phase, at and on either side of the element acting as a ground electrode.
According to a preferred embodiment by its simplicity of implementation, the ground electrode is conventionally located at an appropriate distance above the central electrode, but the rod constituting it has a triangular cross section, one of the surfaces of the prismatic element constituting the rod being perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the axis of the candle.
The aforementioned triangular cross section may have more or less rounded angles.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to another embodiment, the cross section of the rod or equivalent element acting as a ground electrode can have the shape of a shell head seen in longitudinal section.
Fig. l represents a configuration of conventional electrodes comprising a tubular main body 1, a threaded base 2, a ground electrode 3 and 3 ′, a central electrode 4 surrounded by the insulating element 5.
Fig. 2 shows a corresponding view with the improved ground electrode according to one of the embodiments of the invention. Fig. 3 is a corresponding view illustrating the case where the section has a shape at the top of the shell.
According to a variant of the invention, the rod acting as an electrode may have an end face inclined towards the outside of the spark plug, thus having an oblique surface relative to the axis of the rod, as illustrated in the fig. 4. The latter is a view corresponding to FIGS. previous but where the electrode rod is seen longitudinally, figure where the normal configuration is repeated in dashed lines.
It is understood that the composition and configuration of the electrode can vary as already described in the prior art. The electrode can thus be conventionally in the form of an L-shaped rod, as illustrated in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
above figures and examples, or according to another known configuration. A candle may in particular have several electrodes according to the invention.
Furthermore, it is advantageous that the elements possibly supporting or constituting the non-active part of the ground electrode have a profile also aerodynamic with respect to the side opposite to that where the explosion occurs, for example a triangular profile as already mentioned. . This is particularly the case for the part parallel to the axis of the spark plug and for the curved part of the conventional curved rod forming a ground electrode.
It was surprisingly found that the particular profile of the ground electrode according to the invention makes it possible to obtain a much higher engine performance, in many parameters, than what is observed with a conventional spark plug (fouling-pollution). -consumption-energy efficiency-power-flexibility-temperature of the spark plug).
The start-up performance of the engine and the possibility of using a leaner fuel mixture are particular advantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Without wishing to be linked in any way by a theoretical interpretation of the observed effect, it can be envisaged that the particular shape of the electrode according to the invention allows the flow of qaz, during the compression phase, to generate a advantageous vortex phenomenon between the ground electrode and the central electrode. Furthermore, during the explosion phase, the spark plug according to the invention would make it possible to avoid the formation of a shadow zone of imperfect combustion lying on the side of the ground electrode opposite to that where the spark occurs.
The invention is not limited by the above-mentioned modes of implementation and may vary in its details and its development.
