<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Compact, highly biodegradable cat litter made from straws. bark. sawdust or another cellulose derivative and enriched with deodorant or disinfectant elements.
The invention describes a compact cat litter with high swelling power made from straws, bark, sawdust or another cellulose derivative and various possible additives described below, as well as its preparation and its use.
The originality of this product resides in its compactness associated with a high capacity for absorbing liquids, effective fixation of ammonia and odors linked to cat urine and high biodegradability.
The originality of the treatment lies in the compaction of these elements, compaction which allows an intimate mixture of absorbent components, components fighting against the development of odors and those fixing existing odors. The final crumbling makes it possible to give the product a lower specific weight, an aspect appreciated by cats without harming its intrinsic qualities.
The use of a litter box intended to collect cat waste is relatively recent. Although it has been reported that sawdust, sand or newspapers have been used before, it was not until the 1950s that the first professional cat litter made from bentonite and later sepiolite was marketed, attapulgite. These litters generally have the disadvantage of a high specific weight and of a weak absorption of liquids.
In recent years, cat litter boxes made from paper, cardboard, straws or flax flakes have also appeared. However, the lack of deodorizing or disinfecting substances incorporated in these litters makes their use precarious.
The present invention proposes to remedy the specific weight problem inherent in litter boxes for mineral cats by the use of substances with very low specific weight (cellulosic materials). In addition, by the use of deodorizing or ammonia-fixing substances, it eliminates any odor formation usually associated with cat litter made from cardboard, straw or flax flakes.
Finally, the judicious combination of acid elements and cellulosic materials give it an absorption capacity of urine or any other liquid close to 300% while guaranteeing high biodegradability of the litter after use.
This cat litter consists of straws (wheat, barley, rice, millet, sorghum, ...), paper or cardboard, plywood or sawdust, cereal husks, sugar cane bagasse, cocoa shells, corn cobs, potting soil, compost or peat, hay, alfalfa dehydrates or grasses These materials can be used alone or as a mixture. May be added acidifying materials fixing ammonia such as phosphoric acid, mono-or bi-calcium phosphate, mono-or bi-potassium, mono-or bi-sodium.
Can also be added acidifying materials such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid or deodorants such as activated charcoal or charcoal The cellulosic materials used in the composition of cat litter are roughly chopped so as to obtain debris with a size between 0 1 and 20 millimeters These debris are mixed intimately with the other elements
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
constituting the cat litter (It should be noted that these other elements can also be added after compression or after crumbling as described in the examples below). This mixture is then compressed (molded, granulated or extruded) according to the desired shape: it can be tuilots, pellets, pancakes or plugs.
Their size can range from 2 to 50 millimeters, preferably from 4 to 25 millimeters, even more preferably from 4 to 10 millimeters. The result of the compression can possibly be flattened or crumbled so as to give it a lower specific weight, to increase the surface in contact with the excrement of the animal and to make the product more pleasant for the animal. This crumbling will be carried out for example using an oat flattener or a crumbling of plugs or granules The present invention is illustrated by the examples below.
Example 1.
970 kg of wheat straw are coarsely chopped using a hammer mill, the outlet grid of which has holes with a diameter of 20 mm. The debris obtained is intimately mixed with 30 kg of concentrated phosphoric acid in a NAUTA type mixer. After a contact time of 30 to 60 minutes, the mixture is compressed using a fixed horizontal die press in the form of plugs 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. These plugs are cooled in a vertical cooler. These plugs are flattened in an oat flattener to give them extra lightness and a look appreciated by the animal.
Example 2.
960 kg of wheat straw are coarsely chopped using a hammer mill, the outlet grid of which has holes with a diameter of 20 mm. The debris obtained is intimately mixed with 40 kg of bicalcium phosphate in a NAUTA type mixer. After a contact time of 30 to 60 minutes, the mixture is compressed using a fixed horizontal die press in the form of plugs 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length These plugs are cooled in a vertical cooler These plugs are flattened in an oat flattener to give them additional lightness and an appearance appreciated by the animal.
