<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Coagulating product for laaues or waxes in wet separators"
The present invention relates to a coagulating product based on recent natural resins for the release and coagulation of coating materials, such as lacquers and / or waxes, in wet separators of spray varnishing installations.
When coating metallic, wooden or synthetic parts in a spraying process, it is not possible to apply the coating materials without residue on the surfaces to be coated. Part of the coating material is sprayed beyond the object in the form of so-called "excess spraying" and must be removed from the air of the varnishing booth. using wet separators. To prevent agglutinations in the parts of the installation which are conductive of water and to guarantee elimination of the coating material introduced from the circulation water, coagulants are added to the water which produce a take-off of the material introduced and which, by agglomeration, transforms it into a coagulation product capable of being evacuated.
As a coagulating product, a series of neutral, alkaline and also acidic products has so far been available. These have several disadvantages during coagulation and during a possibly subsequent treatment of the coagulation product formed to recover substances of contained values, such as binders and pigments.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In DE-C-1269594 it is described to add alkalis to the circulating water until a pH value of approximately 9-10.5 is obtained, which makes it possible to saponify the lacquer binders and to make them less sticky. Addition of mineral oil causes additional coating of the particles. The disadvantage of this process is that alkaline products have to be taken into account from the point of view of occupational safety and that the saponification reactions in many cases make it impossible to recover the binders from the coagulation products.
In DE-C-2758873 it is described to add, for lacquers poor in solvent which cannot be managed satisfactorily according to the preceding process, instead of mineral oil a mineral wax or paraffin which also coats the lacquer particles. The drawbacks of the alkaline solutions in circulation are not therefore eliminated.
In DE-C-34 21 289 it is therefore proposed to use amino alcohols or morpholine, instead of alkali, together with waxes. The disadvantage of these products is that the waxes and lacquer binders can hardly be separated, which, when re-using valuable substances recovered from the coagulation product containing wax leads, for the manufacture of materials for coating, a reduction in adhesiveness and consequently faulty coatings, so that the mixture obtained must be eliminated and that it cannot be reused. Due to the emulsifying agents contained, it is possible to achieve a partial emulsion of the components of the coagulation product in the circulating water and therefore their evacuation can be prevented.
The concentration that occurs from these
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
components of the coagulation product necessitates a premature change of the circulation water.
DE-C 34 21 270 also describes one-component wax coagulants which contain, as additives, marble lime hydrate, thickening agents, lower aliphatic alcohols and condensation products naphthalenic acid. These products also react strongly alkaline.
Coagulant products based on metal salts which react very often in an acidic manner can, by concentration of the salts in the circulating water, cause strong corrosion of the installation and they promote, by lowering the pH value of l water, bacteria growth and the associated formation of bothersome odors.
The use of clay minerals having an adsorption action, as coagulants, causes an increase in the coagulation product formed and results in a high water content due to the pronounced swelling capacity of the clay minerals.
In addition, the rapid and uniform distribution of these products in the circulation water, which is necessary for coagulation, is frequently insufficient, since they are used in the form of highly viscous powders or pastes.
The object of the present invention is therefore to develop coagulant products for lacquers and other coating materials, which guarantee lasting take-off and agglomeration and which do not disadvantageously affect possible recovery and reuse of valuable substances from the coagulation product. The new products may be suitable for coagulating coating materials not only containing a solvent but also water and they also have a consistency.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
fluid as possible to obtain a simple dosage and a rapid, uniform distribution in the circulating water.
By means of special additives in their formulation, the floating properties of the coagulation product formed, therefore sedimentation or flotation, can be influenced.
These problems are resolved by the features of the main claim and the features of the secondary claims.
The present invention therefore relates to formulations which comprise a) 1 to 50% by weight of shellac, balsamic resin or other recent natural resins, b) up to 10% by weight of an amine, an alkanola - mine or an alkali metal hydroxide, for the adjustment of a pH value of 6-9, c) the remainder up to 100% by weight being water.
Recent natural resins are secretions freshly obtained from plants or, in the case of shellac, animals. Unlike natural fossil resins which are extracted from geological deposits, they are characterized by good solubility in organic solvents and they have been used, until they are largely swept away by synthetic materials, to a great extent for the manufacture of printing inks, lacquers and other coating materials.
Their use according to the invention in coagulant products has the effect of a remarkable release action due to their high affinity for binders of all types. Their properties similar to binders also allow recycling of the coagulation product, without adversely influencing the quality of the lacquer binders recovered.
Viewed from a chemical point of view, recent natural resins consist of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
mixture of very different substances, such as resin acids, resin alcohols, esters of resin acids and alcohols, phenols and unsaturated compounds, partially containing oxygen. The main components of shellac are aleuritic acid and shellolic acid, the balsamic resin containing mainly abietic acid and its isomers. Wax fractions, which possibly disrupt the use according to the invention, are separated by dissolution in cold alcohol in which the wax is insoluble or by dissolution in toluene and precipitation with alcohol. The resin is obtained in pure form by evaporation of the solvent.
The resins used according to the invention can, by neutralization with an alkali (sodium or potassium hydroxide) or with amines and alkanolamines, be converted into the soluble salts which have a pH value of about 6- in aqueous solution. 9, preferably 6-8. Any wax residue, which is not dissolved, is removed by filtration in this step. This solution can therefore easily be added to the circulating water of the separator by the wet method, it is not aggressive and, unlike mineral oils, waxes and solid flocculating agents, it is not deposited on calm areas. machines.
The mode of action of the products according to the invention is based, in a manner analogous to the case of waxes, on peeling off the lacquer by adsorption on the resin flakes. The lacquer particles are then partially coated and the fine flakes agglomerate into macrofloccons capable of evacuation.
The action according to the invention is further improved when the formulations contain a small amount of surfactants (surfactants), anionic, neutral or amphoteric compounds
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
can be used in an equivalent manner; surfactants, which could form insoluble salts with resin acids, are less advantageous. The surfactants are added to the mixture, for example in an amount of up to 5% by weight. To avoid excessive foaming by surface-active agents and lacquer constituents, the mixture is preferably added up to 5% by weight of defoaming agent. Polyalkylene glycols are preferably used for this, but other known compounds can also be used for this purpose.
Frequently it is desirable to collect and draw off the coagulation products formed, independently of the specific weight of the lacquer constituents, at the bottom or on the surface of the circulating water.
For this purpose, it is possible to add up to 5% by weight of organic, light flocculating auxiliary agents, or up to 20% by weight of phyllosilicates or of silicic acid, which are incorporated in the coagulation products and float or sediment them.
In the following examples, the invention will be described in more detail. These standard formulations are added to the circulating water of the separator by the wet method in an amount of 0.1 to 5% by weight and, after use, they are supplemented in a corresponding manner. The coagulating products can be contained in an amount of 1-100% by weight, preferably 2 to 10% by weight, relative to the amount of excessive spraying of lacquer separated by washing.
Example 1 10% by weight of shellac (ammonium salt)
0.3% by weight of polyalkylene glycol, the remainder up to 100% by weight being water.
Example 2 10% by weight of balsamic resin
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
2% by weight of potassium hydroxide
0.3% by weight of polyalkylene glycol
0.5% by weight of polyglycol ester and fatty acid, the remainder up to 100% by weight being water.
Example 3 5% by weight of shellac (ammonium salt) 5% by weight of bentonite 0.3% by weight of polyalkylene glycol 1% by weight of polyglycol ester and of fatty acid the rest up to 100% weight being water.
Example 4 5% by weight of balsamic resin (pine resin) 1% by weight of potassium hydroxide 1% by weight of bentonite 0.5% by weight of silicic acid 0.1% by weight of polyalkylene glycol the rest up to '' at 100% by weight being water.
For the preparation of the mixtures, the resin is dissolved in the corresponding amount of water at 80 to 1000C or it is suspended therein. The residual components are then added to the mixture, with stirring.
For the coagulation tests, the following coating materials are used: (A) One-component vehicle finishing lacquer, baking lacquer
EMI7.1
(B) One-component topcoat, UV-drying (C) One-component vehicle floor lacquer, air-drying (D) Preservative wax
6 g of each of the coating materials are added dropwise, with stirring, in each liter of water, supplemented with 3 g of the corresponding example mixture. The coagulation product obtained appears in all tests in the form of flakes
