<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
(vis 17).
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

"Torque transmission coupling"
The present invention relates to a coupling for transmitting a torque, which allows at least one angular misalignment and axial displacement between two elements of the coupling and which comprises: at least one internal coupling element provided with external means d drive, an external coupling member in the form of a sleeve, arranged around the external drive means and comprising internal drive means which can be engaged with the external drive means to establish a transmission of the torque between external and internal coupling elements, the internal and external drive means being further arranged so that the internal and external coupling elements can slide into one another,
- a spring assembly arranged to act between the internal coupling element and the external coupling element so as to make them slide one inside the other or to follow the sliding which would be imposed on them .
To date, a coupling of the type mentioned above is known (ESCOGEAR FTR90 produced by ESCO TRANSMISSION BELGIUM) consisting of a juxtaposition of two half-couplings which each comprise a hub provided with external teeth and a sleeve with internal teeth.
The juxtaposition is carried out by fixing one to the other of the two sleeves. Each time, between hub and sleeve there is a compression spring. Both
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
springs are of equal force so that, if the two hubs are misaligned or more or less spread apart during service, within the permitted operating limits, the sleeves fixed together are automatically arranged in a balanced or symmetrical manner on each of the hubs, at the coupling teeth.
The aforementioned type of coupling assembly presents numerous problems and disadvantages, of which the following are examples.
- In the event of misalignment, each compression spring is deformed because by pressing on two surfaces which do not remain parallel and this causes an imbalance during the rotation of the coupling assembly.
- When one wants to separate a motor member, comprising one of the hubs, from a receiving member comprising the other hub, it is usual to detach the two sleeves from one another. At this time, however, the two springs continue to press the two sleeves against each other until the motor and receiver members are moved axially a sufficient distance from each other and this constitutes a risk. accident during this kind of manipulation, due to the thrust of the springs. In addition, if the separation of the motor or receiver member cannot be done axially but must be done transversely, it is necessary to provide external tools which compress the springs before being able to separate the members. This constitutes additional costs and a waste of handling time.
- This type of coupling assembly is usually lubricated with grease and flanges intended to prevent an exit of grease and an entry of dust are arranged at each end of the assembly. These collars are subjected to strong deformations which shorten their service life and require
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
frequent and expensive disassembly. These flanges are unsuitable for oil lubrication, however, the constant distribution and redistribution capacities between elements to be lubricated constitute an advantage claimed by users.
- During the aforementioned disassembly, by separation of the sleeves, the space between the sleeve and the hub of each coupling half is open, at least at the separated ends, and grease can escape, and a fortiori from the oil if the latter was still used (unless you drain the coupling first, but it takes time for oil and is not possible for grease).
- The regions between the hub and the external toothing of the latter must be deeply hollowed out so that, on the one hand, the collar for collecting the lubricant can be effective in bringing the lubricant back to the areas to be lubricated and, on the other hand, the spring can be accommodated without unnecessarily elongating the coupling assembly in the axial direction. These recesses reduce the section of the hub and therefore its solidity and the rigidity of fixing the teeth.
The present invention aims to remedy these problems and proposes a coupling: - whose spring assemblies are not irregularly deformed during operation, - whose lubrication can easily be carried out with oil, the disassembly of which by relation to the motor and / or receiver members automatically closes the space between the hub and the sleeve at the level of the separate ends, which, used in a coupling assembly of the aforementioned type, is arranged so that the two sleeves move apart automatically from each other, so as to facilitate axial or transverse removal of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the driving or receiving member without being subjected to the force of the spring assemblies at this time,
and of which the material between the hub and the toothing of the hub can be sufficiently massive for the solidity of the assembly and the transmission of the torque in the event of hooping of the hub on a shaft.
To this end, according to the invention, the transmission coupling comprises: an interposed device by means of which the spring assembly acts on a first of the coupling elements, internal or external and which is mounted on or in a second of the coupling elements, respectively external or internal, so as to be able to slide parallel to an axis of rotation of this second coupling element, this interposed device cooperating with said first coupling element, so as to make it slide or to follow the sliding which would be imposed on it relative to said second under the action of the spring assembly, and comprising angular misalignment means between the two coupling elements.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the spring assembly comprises several compression springs regularly distributed around the axis of rotation of the coupling element on or in which the interposed device slides, the longitudinal axes of the compression springs preferably being parallel to the aforementioned axis of rotation.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention: - the transmission coupling comprises two internal coupling elements which can occupy a position substantially symmetrical with respect to a plane perpendicular to their axis of rotation, - the element of external coupling is arranged around the external drive means of each of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
internal coupling elements and comprises internal drive means which can be engaged with these latter external drive means, the external coupling element thus ensuring the transmission of a torque between one and the other of the internal coupling elements, while allowing relative axial and / or transverse displacement of these internal elements and / or the abovementioned angular misalignment,
and a spring assembly and an interposed device are arranged between each of the internal coupling elements and the external coupling element, in a manner substantially symmetrical with respect to the abovementioned perpendicular plane.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the secondary claims and from the description of the drawings which are annexed to the present specification and which illustrate, by way of nonlimiting examples, two embodiments of the transmission coupling according to the invention. 'invention.
Figure 1 shows in axial section a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 shows in section, with broken, another embodiment of the interposed device and the spring assembly.
In the various figures, the same reference notations (with possibly an additional letter) designate identical or analogous elements.
The coupling 1 of the invention is used for transmitting a torque and is arranged to allow angular misalignment and axial movement between input and output shafts of the motor and receiver members that the coupling 1 connects.
A simple embodiment of the coupling 1 of the invention is shown both on the left
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
only to the right of a line AA in FIG. 1. This coupling 1 comprises an internal coupling element 2, usually in the form of a hub 3 to be fixed on a shaft 4 of a motor or receiver member, and an external coupling element 5 in the form of a sleeve 6 to be connected, for example by an intermediate flange, to a receiving or respectively motor member which may be another similar sleeve 6A.
The hub 3 and the sleeve 6 each comprise respectively external drive means 7 for the hub 3 and internal 8 for the sleeve 6, these means advantageously being, on the one hand, an external toothing 9, with a known bending to allow the misalignment, and, on the other hand, an internal toothing 10. The external toothing 9 and internal toothing 10 are matched to be in engagement and to establish a torque transmission between hub 3 and sleeve 6 as is known. The internal teeth 10 and external teeth 9 can usually slide one inside the other, and for this purpose the external teeth 9 are usually narrower than the internal teeth 10.
A spring assembly 11 is arranged between hub 3 and sleeve 6 to act between them so as to make them slide one into the other. This assembly 11 preferably consists of several compression springs 12 distributed regularly around the hub 3, on a circumference, and preferably arranged parallel to the axis of the hub 3.
In the example of FIG. 1, the springs 12 are supported, at one end, against the hub 3 in which they can be partially housed and, at the other end, against the sleeve 6 by means of a interleaved device 13 constituted in this case by (starting from the springs) a support ring 14 applied against a hinge ring 15 which bears on a collar 16 at one end of the sleeve 6, this collar 16 being preferably removable
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
(screw 17). The support ring 14 is mounted with sliding fit on a cylindrical and coaxial part 18 of the hub 3.
The articulation ring 15 is mounted on the same cylindrical part 18 but with a determined clearance explained below and it participates in the means which allow the abovementioned angular misalignment and which comprise the convex external toothing 9. By this assembly, the springs 12 therefore act between the hub 3 and the support ring 14 which moves by sliding parallel to the axis of rotation of the hub 3. The springs 12 thus all undergo the same deformation along their axis only, parallel to the axis of rotation above, without causing an imbalance in the coupling 1.
FIG. 2 shows another embodiment of the coupling 1 in which the interposed device 13 comprises a support and articulation ring 14A which is mounted to slide in a cylindrical bore 19 coaxial with the sleeve 6B and which is applied against the hub 3 by the force of the springs 12 which on the other hand bear on a collar 20 preferably fixed in a removable manner (screw 17) at the end of the sleeve 6B. In this case also, the springs 12 are preferably parallel to the axis of rotation of the sleeve 6B.
So that the coupling 1 of the invention can satisfy the condition of angular misalignment, according to the example of FIG. 2, on the one hand the surface of the support and articulation ring 14A and on the other hand the surface of the hub 3 against which this ring 14A is applied are portions of respectively concave 21 and convex spherical surface 22 whose center is located on the axis of rotation of the sleeve 6B or of the hub 3. For the hub 3, this center may be located at the intersection of the axis of rotation and the median plane of the bending, perpendicular to this axis.

For the same condition of angular misalignment, according to the example of FIG. 1, the collar 16 and the articulation ring 15 respectively have one portion of a concave spherical surface 23 and the other a convex 24 whose centers coincide , for example for an average sliding position of the teeth 9 and 10, with the intersection of the axis of rotation of the hub 3 and the aforementioned bending median plane.
To satisfy this same condition of angular misalignment outside the above-mentioned average sliding position, the invention provides that the articulation ring 15 is mounted with a determined diametral play on the cylindrical part 18. In this way, this ring 15 may follow, within the limits of angular misalignment allowed, an offset movement which the collar 16 undergoes, and therefore its portion of spherical surface 23, relative to the axis of rotation of the hub 3, while maintaining the one applied in the other the concave 23 and convex 24 surface portions.
To advantageously improve the sealing of the coupling 1, one or more sets of seals 25, for example O-rings, can be provided in the two embodiments above. In the case of FIG. 1 (see the right side thereof), according to the case in point such a seal 25 can be arranged between support ring 14 and articulation ring 15, between one and / or the other of these and the cylindrical part 18, preferably for sliding on the latter, and / or between the concave 23 and convex surface portions 24, preferably in an annular groove of the concave portion 23.
In the case of FIG. 2, a seal 25 can be provided between the support and articulation ring 14A, preferably in an annular groove thereof, and the cylindrical bore 19 and / or between the same ring 14A and the spherical surface portion

than 22, preferably in an annular groove in this ring 14A. These seals 25 can, in the same way as for the example in FIG. 1, advantageously improve the sealing of the coupling 1 at the corresponding end, while it is in service.
As shown in FIG. 1, the axial end of the hub 3, located on the other side of the toothing 9, may have a bearing surface 30 opposite which there is a corresponding bearing surface 31 of the sleeve 6. These bearing surfaces 30 and 31 are arranged on the coupling elements 2 and 5, and one relative to the other, so that in an extreme sliding position in the direction of the expansion action springs 12 these two bearing surfaces 30 and 31 are in abutment against one another by this expansion action.
The relative sliding of the coupling elements 2 and 5 is thus blocked for example to facilitate mounting of the coupling 1 on a motor or receiver member or its disassembly. Other locations could however be chosen for the bearing surfaces 30 and 31.
Preferably, the bearing surfaces 30 and 31 are of revolution and continuous at the above-mentioned axial end. For example, they are frustoconical, as shown in FIG. 1, so that one 30 can enter the other 31 (or vice versa) and be in contact with it, under the action of the springs 12, to close substantially internally at this end an internal space 33, between hub 3 and sleeve 6, partly occupied by the teeth 9 and 10. The seal thus obtained may for example be sufficient to prevent a flow of lubricant during assembly in one piece of the coupling 1 on a motor or receiver or its disassembly.
The coupling 1 of the invention may however advantageously comprise two coupling elements-
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
internal hubs 2 in the form of a hub 3 as shown in the entirety of FIG. 1. These two hubs 3, of the same kind as that described above, can then be arranged substantially symmetrically with respect to a plane perpendicular in AA to their rotation axis. A sleeve 6-6A of this embodiment of the coupling 1 is then arranged around the external toothing 9 of the two hubs 3 and it each has an internal toothing 10 arranged as above.
Thus the sleeve 6-6A, which can form only one piece, can ensure a transmission of a torque from one hub 3 to the other, while allowing for each hub 3 relative to the sleeve 6-6A a misalignment angular and / or axial displacement determined, and therefore between the two hubs 3 angular misalignment and / or axial and / or transverse displacement determined. For the sake of clarity of the drawing, the references of similar elements or of the same function, situated on one side or the other of the perpendicular plane at A-A are not repeated. Elements of this kind can be a second spring assembly 11 and a second interposed device 13 for the second hub 3 on the right in FIG. 1.
These second spring assembly 11 and interposed device 13 on the one hand and the second bearing surfaces 30 and 31 on the other hand can be arranged symmetrically with respect to the plane perpendicular in AA to those and those described for the left part of the FIG. 1, the end of the hub 3 carrying the bearing surface 30 preferably being the closest to the plane in AA.
Preferably also, the sleeve 6-6A can be formed of two parts, two sleeves 6 and 6A fixed to each other by bolts 35. In this case also for each hub 3, the axial end which carries the bearing surface 30 is closest to the plane in AA and cooperates with a bearing surface 31 on the same side of this plane in AA to obtain a sliding blocking

and optionally sealing each internal space 33 mentioned above during assembly or disassembly in block of the coupling 1. For the same sealing purpose, the interposed device 13 and spring assembly 11 of each hub 3 are preferably placed at the opposite axial ends of the two sleeves 6 and 6A assembled.
In the case of coupling 1 to two hubs 3 in FIG. 1, the two spring assemblies 11 are dimensioned to locate the sleeve 6-6A, or the two sleeves 6 and 6A assembled, in a determined position, preferably for that the external teeth 9 and internal teeth 10 of the two hubs 3 and of the sleeve (s) 6.6A are automatically arranged substantially symmetrically to the plane in AA when this coupling 1 is installed between a drive member and a receiver member, even during transmission of torque and during movement of the drive member relative to the receiving member, and this regardless of the relative position of the two hubs 3 within the allowed limits.
From an examination of FIG. 1, it appears that by loosening the bolts 35, each sleeve 6 or 6A is pushed back by the corresponding spring assembly 11 so as to move away from one another and to apply one against the other the corresponding bearing surfaces 30 and 31 and, to close the end thus freed of the sleeves 6 and 6A in a substantially sealed manner.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications can be made to these without departing from the scope of the present invention.
For example, although the springs 12 which are shown here and which are of reduced size require only small volume holes in the connection part between hub 3 and external toothing 9 and although this embodiment is favorable to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
solidity of this part, the invention can be carried out with a coil spring surrounding the cylindrical part 18 of the hub 3 and constituting by itself the spring assembly 11.
Although the springs 12 are preferably arranged parallel to the axis of rotation of the coupling element 2 or 5 on which they rest directly, they could however occupy any other suitable position provided that all the springs the same spring assembly 11 are arranged in a regular and similar manner around the relative axis of rotation and with respect thereto. In addition, tension springs or other types could be used in these assemblies 11.
As shown in the right-hand part of FIG. 1, the coupling 1 may comprise at one or at its ends a dust protection device formed for example by a metal flange 40 fixed to the sleeve 6.6A, a rubber washer 41 wedged between the collar 40 and the collar 16 and a collar 42 fixed to the hub 3.
