<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
weinig flexibel.
EMI2.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
boogvormig profiel.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Device for applying stoma plates"
This invention relates to a device for heating ostomy plates more quickly and uniformly and adhering to the skin thanks to pressure.
Stoma plates intended to be glued to the skin at the site of the intervention during colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy, are always provided with an adhesive layer on one side. Usually this adhesive layer is based on pectin, which shows better adhesive properties when heated. A pouch should be attached to such a stoma plate that has a central opening for collecting bowel movements or urine.
Warming was usually done by massaging the material from which the plate was formed around the central opening with your finger.
The friction creates heat that makes the pectin layer sticky so that after 10 to 20 minutes of this treatment the stoma plate can stick to the skin. This time span is not only too long and time consuming, but it has also been regularly established that global warming was insufficient.
Attempts have already been made to design a device equipped with non-rechargeable batteries. This device had several drawbacks, the most important of which was the too low available temperature. The need to renew the batteries in time also proved to be a considerable nuisance and made use of the device too
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
not very flexible.
It is important that heat and pressure can be applied to that part of the stoma plate.
The object of the invention is now to prescribe a device which allows to heat and iron the area of the stoma plate to be heated quickly and with the greatest accuracy.
In order to solve the above-described and other related problems, the device according to the invention is formed by a pin and an adjustable heating resistor to keep at least the head of said pin at a preset temperature.
In a very advantageous embodiment, said heating resistor is a self-regulating heating resistor.
In a special embodiment
EMI2.1
intended heating resistance of the P. and N. respectively.
Other details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an apparatus according to the invention. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention. The reference numbers refer to the attached figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device according to the invention.
Figure 2 illustrates the method of use of the device according to the invention.
The appliance represented by these figures is formed by a pin 1, provided with a heatable head 2 with an ironing surface 3. This ironing surface has, from an ergonomic point of view, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
arc-shaped profile. The heatable head 2 consists of a conductive mass with a central cavity 4 in which a heating resistor 5 is built. This heating resistor 5 is connected by electrical conductors 6 to a low-voltage current connection 7.
Characteristic of the invention is the use as a heating resistor of a self-regulating device
EMI3.1
resistance of the P. Temperature Control) or of the N. (Negative Temperature Control). A resistor fed via a thermostat can also be used.
Due to the use of a heating resistor of the P. T. C. and the N. T. C. type, the entire device can have very small dimensions and thus be very compact. This gives the patient a good grip in the hand while the heated ironing surface of the head of the pen has optimal dimensions.
In all three cases, the head of the pin is always brought to its ideal temperature and kept at this ideal temperature.
The arcuate ironing surface 3 of the head 2 of the pin 1 is preferably provided with a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) which considerably increases the ironing capacity of the pin.
Thanks to this "Tef1on" layer, it is also possible to massage the stoma plate through a bag made of polyethylene or a technically equivalent material.
It is now possible for a patient (represented by figure 2) to bring a stoma plate 8, usually the circular central part 8 thereof, to the desired temperature in a very short time. The heat-sensitive pectin layer which has been applied on one side of the stoma plate 8 can now continue
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the patient should be warmed up without any problem and brought to the desired temperature without having to do a regular and long-lasting friction of the central part of the stoma plate.
The temperature developed by the heating resistors of the intended type is therefore always of the desired level and burns are therefore completely excluded.
Many patients suffer from skin irritations and wounds in the area around the stoma. Using cicatrizating and wound healing powders, these patients then experience particular difficulties sticking their stoma plates in this area.
It has been found that the device according to the invention considerably increases the adhesive properties of the said plates, also in these difficult circumstances where both the use of powders and the presence of moisture make it difficult to stick the stoma plates.
The pin 1 can be hollow, but the electrical conductors 6 could also be contained in a ceramic or insulating filling compound.
It is also possible to use a separate holder in which the pin can be inserted. The container would then be maintained at a controllably constant temperature level in the same manner.
