MEMBRANE DE FILTRATION EN POLYMERE POUR FLUIDES
ET SON PROCEDE DE FABRICATION
DESCRIPTION
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
DESCRIPTION DETAILLEE D'UN MODE PREFERE DE REALISATION DE L'INVENTION
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
L'ordre de 30 à 50 kV. Ce traitement ponctuel peut être effectué en plusieurs points. Cette opération peut se faire à partir de la colonne optique du microscope électronique de balayage ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

POLYMER FILTRATION MEMBRANE FOR FLUIDS
AND MANUFACTURING METHOD THEREOF
DESCRIPTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
In general, the invention relates to the filtration of fluids, liquid or gaseous, for which it is difficult to clean the filters which tend to clog up because of the impurities retained. It relates in particular to the purification treatment of running water.
PRIOR ART AND PROBLEM POSED
Water purification treatments are generally carried out by decantation and filtration in large tanks, then by chemical treatments. This method requires having large areas of land to create basins whose settling capacity meets the volume of running water consumed in the district to be supplied.
A more recent technique of treatment by "ultra-filtration" through polymer membranes makes it possible to obtain drinking water of excellent quality and also makes it possible to avoid any recourse to chemicals. This technique has hitherto been reserved for the pharmaceutical and agrifood industries, for advanced techniques, such as that relating to space equipment. This technique is very expensive and therefore cannot be envisaged for large-scale industrial applications. In fact, this method is only valid in practical terms if the cracks, holes or interstices in the membranes are not too clogged
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
quickly, or at least if they can be unclogged easily.
In this regard, the terms "decoLmater" and "unclogging" are commonly used in this technique to express this action which consists in cleaning the membranes by opening all the holes, interstices or slots in them.
In fact, in the current state of technology, we know how to make very effective membranes from the point of view of filtration. By cons, they clog relatively quickly and unclogging, by an inverted flux in the pipes, is ineffective. Indeed, to clear an obstacle placed in the flow of a fluid flowing in a pipe, the direction of the flow is reversed to clear the obstacle. Dirt and other dirt accumulated on the upstream side of the obstruction can thus be released. This is therefore not the case for polymer membranes.
This ineffective cleaning of the latter can be explained when the adhesion forces of foreign materials on the polymer membrane are too large to be countered by the tearing force due to a movement and to a reverse pressure of the water. . In fact, the mechanical strength of the filter membrane requires that this pulling force be limited.
Consequently, the obLigation of unclogging these polymer membranes or of unclogging them requires most of the time to change them, which is extremely expensive.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks by providing a membrane which can be unclogged using a reduced force and easy to apply.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
To this end, the first main object of the invention is a polymer filtration membrane for fluid.
According to the invention, this membrane is provided with a high dielectric constant. This makes it possible to greatly limit the adhesion forces of foreign materials.
This electrical property is obtained by giving the membrane an ionically doped electronic structure.
A second main object of the invention is a method of manufacturing such a membrane comprising an ion doping phase.
Preferably, this ion doping takes place over a few hundred Angstroms (about 10-7 m).
The process according to the invention is particularly effective when ions of elements included in the group of titanium, chromium and manganese are used.
A third main object of the invention is a method of manufacturing such a membrane comprising an irradiation phase with ionizing radiation belonging to the group of ultraviolet rays, X-rays and gamma rays.
A main characteristic of the process is that it comprises several phases of electrostatic control of the membrane, that is to say after each of several ionization phases.
This last phase is preferably carried out using a scanning electron microscope, used as a measurement probe, to examine the electrostatic charge of the membrane.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In this case, the way to proceed is as follows. After each ionization phase: - negatively and locally charge the membrane using the scanning electron microscope at several different high voltages Un; - observe, for each voltage, the irradiated area using the scanning electron microscope used at a very low voltage, to operate in "mirror" mode, by reading an equipotential line of approximately circular shape; - take up the different R radii of the equipotential lines thus identified; - plot for each phase the curve of the measurement points 1 / R = f (Un); - stop processing, when the slope of the curve is at its maximum.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
The invention and its various technical characteristics will be better understood on reading the following description, appended with a single figure representing a curve relating to the electrostatic control of the membrane according to the invention, during its manufacturing process.
The applicant has very recently carried out very detailed studies and research concerning the electrical polarization of insulating materials.
In this context, a fundamental study concerning the relationships between microscopic properties and macroscopic properties was carried out.
It highlights relationships between, on the one hand, mechanical properties, electrical properties and optical properties and, on the other,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
properties of electrical insulators or dielectrics. This study made it possible in particular to show the essential role played by electrical charges and the dielectric or insulating permittivity of an insulating medium on the behavior of particles in adhesion or in friction on the insulating material.
It appeared in particular that the control of the electrostatic properties of a part made of insulating material can influence the adhesion capacities of this part with respect to foreign materials.
In other words, if we control the electrostatic properties of a polymer membrane, we will also control its adhesion capacity vis-à-vis the impurities that come to pile up on its face.
In the case of polymer filter membranes, it therefore appears theoretically possible to prevent the impurities drained in the waste water pipes and of very varied dimensions from strongly adhering to the upstream face of the membrane. However, this is immersed in water, the dielectric constant is very high and the resistivity is very variable, depending on the concentration of ions in solution in water. It is thus possible to envisage the existence of a membrane with a high dielectric constant and endowed with an electronic structure ensuring it a certain conduction, to avoid electrical polarization under the effect of the friction of water.
The invention therefore proposes firstly to provide the membrane with a high dielectric constant at the surface. In a second step, it is envisaged to give it an ion-doped electronic structure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The embodiments of the membrane according to the invention described in the following paragraphs make it possible to provide the latter both with a high dielectric constant and with an ionically doped electronic structure.
Two methods are possible for providing such a membrane having the two technical characteristics mentioned above.
The first consists in carrying out an ion doping of the membrane, supplemented or not by an irradiation. This type of treatment absolutely does not modify the filtration qualities of the membrane. To boost the material constituting the membrane, in this case a polymer, it is bombarded with ions, in particular chromium, titanium or manganese ions. This ionization takes place over a thickness of a few hundred Angstroms, in the case of a membrane doped with chromium. Such a
EMI6.1
ion implantation can be carried out using a conventional ion implanter, as long as it can contain at least one filter membrane of usual size, namely 10 cm x 10 cm.
A second treatment consists in irradiating the ionizing membrane in polymer with ionizing radiation. For this purpose, UV, X, or gamma rays can be used. In an exemplary embodiment, such a filter membrane can be treated by X-ray irradiation, under 1000 Rad. It is noted that such irradiation has no contaminating effect and that it can be carried out by commercial equipment, such as irradiation generators.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Filter membranes thus irradiated can decolorize easily When a pressure opposite to the flow of water is applied in the pipeline where the filter membrane is located.
However, it is necessary to adapt the ionization of the membrane, as a function of the fluid treated and as a function of the material constituting the membrane (chemical composition, purity, process for obtaining it, structure).
A characteristic of the method according to the invention provides for performing a measurement, or a series of measurements, of the electrostatic state of the membrane after an ion implantation phase. Thanks to the correlations established between the adhesion properties and the electrical properties of the insulators which can constitute the membrane, during the development of the process, it is thus possible to optimize the ionization treatment by regular electrostatic checks. This method can prove to be extremely effective, that is to say sensitive and rapid.
Indeed, in the context of the manufacture of such membranes, the invention provides for an unusual use of the scanning electron microscope. More precisely, the control with such a device consists in: - negatively and locally charging the membrane at a high voltage Un which can be of
The order of 30 to 50 kV. This punctual processing can be carried out at several points. This can be done from the optical column of the scanning electron microscope;
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
- observe the electrostatic state of each charged area, using the scanning electron microscope used at low voltages, of the order of 0.01 kV. The scanning electron microscope then operates in "mirror" mode, the electron beam being reflected.
It is thus possible to read an equipotential line around the charged area, of approximately circular shape. A determined radius of the equipotential curve line is therefore obtained for a determined ionization time and a determined charge voltage. By doing so, after each phase, The previous operation at different voltages, iL is possible to obtain several different diameters. We draw a At for a determined period of ionization a curve determined by
EMI8.1
'es 1 / R = f (Un), points giving the value 1 / R = f (Un), where R is the radius of the equipotent curve line and where Un is the charging voltage (see figure). It can be seen that the slope of the curve thus obtained is the ratio of the static dielectric constant divided by the total charge implanted in the zone considered.
The slope of this curve reaches its maximum When the processing obtained is at its maximum.
The example of the figure shows four curves obtained after four different durations of X-ray irradiation of the membrane, using the scanning electron microscope, at several different loads of a zone considered. In this case, the material of the membrane is preferably a polyethylene film.
R is the radius of the equipment on the screen of the scanning electron microscope.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
k is the geometric constant characteristic of the scanning electron microscope.
The four curves are obtained after different durations of X-ray irradiation treatment.
Curve A corresponds to a duration of five seconds.
Curve B corresponds to an irradiation of ten seconds.
Curve C corresponds to an irradiation of fifteen seconds.
Curve D corresponds to an irradiation of twenty seconds.
We see that Curve C has the greatest slope. Consequently, in this case, it will prove necessary to stop the treatment after the corresponding irradiation period, this obviously for the subsequent membranes.
This example is given as an indication, but each measurement must be adapted to the membrane treated. On the industrial plan, this measurement must be carried out to perfect and optimize the membrane treatment process, but also to monitor the quality of the manufacturing over time of this membrane.
It is thus possible to produce water filtration membranes, shaped and having undergone finishing operations by conventional means. The production of these membranes therefore ends according to the invention by doping by ionic implantation supplemented or not with irradiations, so that these membranes have a high dielectric constant at the surface and an electronic structure.
Assuring them a certain conduction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
It can be noted that with a basic product whose dielectric constant is approximately equal to 2, 3, the irradiation can bring this constant between 10 and 20.
