WERKWIJZE VOOR DE BEREIDING VAN 5-FORMYLVALERIAANZURE
ESTER
<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1> organische of anorganische restgroep voorstelt, X een anionische organische of anorganische restgroep voorstelt,
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
Voorbeeld I
Voorbeelden II-VIII
Vergelijkend Experiment A
<EMI ID=8.1>

PROCESS FOR PREPARING 5-FORMYLVALERIC ACID
ESTER
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 5-formylvaleric acid ester by hydroformylation of a 4-pentenoic acid ester with carbon monoxide and molecular hydrogen at elevated pressure and temperature in the presence of rhodium and a triphenylphosphine.
Such a process is described in US-A-4,801,738 wherein starting from a mixture consisting essentially of 4-pentenoic ester, the 5-formylvaleric acid ester is prepared with an 88.1% by weight selectivity at a pentenoic ester conversion of
81.5%.
A drawback of this known method is that the selectivity to the linear 5-formylvaleric acid ester is relatively low, whereby a significant amount of by-products, such as 4-formylvaleric acid ester, are formed. The ratio between 5-formylvaleric acid ester and the branched aldehydes such as 4-formylvaleric acid ester is called the n / i ratio.
A process in which 5-formylvaleric acid esters are prepared with a high selectivity is important because this compound can serve as starting material in the preparation of caprolactam, caprolactone and adipic acid.
The object of this invention is therefore to provide a process in which 5-formylvaleric acid ester with a higher selectivity and a high n / i ratio
(normal / iso) can be prepared.
This object is achieved in that the triphenylphosphine is substituted with functional groups such that the substituted triphenylphosphine is water soluble and the reaction is carried out in the presence of water.
It appears that when such triphenylphosphine is used, the selectivity to 5-formylvaleric acid ester is higher than the selectivity achievable by the method described in US-A-4,801,738.
An additional advantage is that with the process according to the invention the separation of the catalyst from the reaction mixture is easier to carry out than according to the method described in the aforementioned US-A-4,801,738. Namely, by phase separation of the water phase, with the rhodium and triphenylphosphine dissolved therein, and the organic phase with the reaction products therein, this separation can be easily achieved.
It also appears that as a mixture of mainly 3- and for the rest 4-pentenoic esters
<EMI ID = 1.1>
ester is converted with high selectivity to 5-formylvaleric acid ester, while the 3-pentenoic ester is hardly converted. If this mixture is hydroformylated with the rhodium / triphenylphosphine ligand according to the aforementioned US-A-4,801,738, in contrast to the process according to the invention more 3-pentene ester is converted by hydroformylation. The increased conversion of the 3-pentenoic acid ester partly causes the formation of the undesirable 4- and 3-formylvaleric acid esters. Therefore, in the process of the above-mentioned patent, such a mixture is first distilled in a distillation column with 100 trays and a reflux ratio of 50, whereby a 95% pure 4-pentenoic acid ester is obtained, in order to obtain the 5-formylvaleric acid ester with high selectivity in the hydroformylation. to prepare.
However, with the process of the invention, it is not necessary for the hydroformylation to be carried out with the lowest possible content of 3-pentenoic ester in order to prepare the 5-formylvaleric acid ester with high selectivity because the 3-pentenoic ester is practically not converted by hydroformylation so that the risk of creating unwanted by-products is reduced. This is advantageous because it makes it possible to hydroformylate a mixture of 3- and 4-pentenoic esters obtained, for example, by isomerization of the 3-pentenoic acid ester immediately or after a simple distillation step.
Suitable pentenoic acid esters are pentenoic acid alkyl esters, the alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms. A suitable alkyl group is the methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl or the cyclohexyl group. Another group of suitable pentenoic acid esters are pentenoic acid aryl esters or arylalkyl esters wherein the aryl group or arylalkyl group has 6 to 12 carbon atoms. A suitable aryl group is the phenyl group and a suitable arylalkyl group is the benzyl group.
The 4-pentenoic acid ester can be hydroformylated in the presence of a 3- and / or 2-pentenoic acid ester. For example, a mixture of 2-, 3- and 4-pentenoic acid esters can be prepared starting from the 3-pentenoic acid ester. Here, the 3-pentenoic acid ester is isomerized in the presence of an isomerization catalyst, as described in US-A-4,801,738. The mixture resulting from such an isomerization generally contains 3-12 wt.% 4-pentenoic ester, 75-95 wt.% 3-pentenoic ester and 0-10 wt.% 2-pentenoic ester. Preferably, the content of 2-pentenoic acid ester is between 0-2% by weight. Since in the process of the invention the 3-pentenoic ester and also the 2-pentenoic ester is virtually not converted by hydroformylation compared to the 4-pentenoic ester, it is not necessary to separate these components before hydroformylation.
Still, it may be advantageous to enrich the mixture in 4-pentenoic acid ester so that the required volume of the hydroformylation reactor can be limited. For this separation, a single-tray distillation with a normal reflux ratio may be sufficient and a column with 100 trays and a reflux ratio of 50 as mentioned in US-A-4,801,738 need not be used.
Such a mixture prepared by an isomerization of, for example, the 3-pentenoic acid ester followed by distillation generally contains 10-95% 4-pentenoic ester (based on the total of pentenoic esters). Preferably the mixture contains more than 20% 4-pentenoic acid ester because otherwise the required volume of the hydroformylation reactor would become very large. Preferably, the mixture contains less than 90% 4-pentenoic acid ester because the distillation can then be carried out in a simple manner.
Suitable triphenylphosphines of the invention are substituted with functional groups such that the triphenylphosphine is water soluble. Suitable substituted functional groups are sulfonate, carboxylate groups and residual cationic groups of ammonium salts.
Such triphenylphosphines can be represented by the following general chemical formulas:
<EMI ID = 2.1>
<EMI ID = 3.1> represents organic or inorganic residue, X represents an anionic organic or inorganic residue,
<EMI ID = 4.1>
18 carbon atoms and n1, n2 and n3 can independently be 0 or 1, the sum of n1, n2 and n3 being greater than or equal to 1 and preferably equal to 1, 2 or 3.
The phosphines according to the invention can be used in pure form or as a mixture of phosphines, the sum of n1, n2 and n3 being different for the different phosphines. The use of such a mixture is advantageous because this mixture arises in the preparation of substituted phosphines, whereby further purification can be omitted. Preferably, in such a mixture, the average sum of n1, n2 and n3 of the substituted phosphines is greater than 2.5. More preferably, this sum is greater than 2.8.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
the inorganic cations of metals, in particular of alkaline earth alkali metals such as sodium, potassium, calcium and barium as well as ammonium ions or quaternary ammonium ions such as tetramethylammonium, tetrapropylammonium or tetrabutylammonium.
Suitable anionic residual groups (X) are the sulfate and phosphate groups and organic residual acid groups
<EMI ID = 6.1>
Preferably the carboxylate groups and the cationic residual groups of ammonium salts are para-substituted and sulfonate groups are meta-substituted on the phenyl group.
Examples of such substituted triphenylphosphines are (monosulfonatophenyl) diphenylphosphine, di (monosulfonatophenyl) phenylphosphine, tri (monosulfonatophenyl) phosphine, (monocarboxyphenyl) diphenylphosphine and phenylphenyl) phenyl.
The preparation of a triphenylphosphine of formula I is described, inter alia, in an article by G.P. Schiemenz & H.U. Siebeneick, Chem Ber. 1969, 102,
1883-91.
The preparation of a triphenylphosphine (formula III) substituted with a substituted ammonium salt is described, inter alia, in US-A-4,522,932.
The use of a triphenylphosphine with sulfonate groups as a ligand in the hydroformylation with rhodium of an olefin is known per se from DE-A-2,627,354. This patent describes that it is possible to hydroformylate both internal olefins, such as 2-butene, 2-pentene and 3-octene, and terminal olefins, such as propylene, 1-butene and 1-pentene, with such a catalyst. Olefin esters and in particular the pentenoic acid ester are not mentioned as possible starting materials. It is therefore surprising that when using such a catalyst during hydroformylation of a mixture of 3- and 4-pentenoic esters, the 4-pentenoic ester (the olefin terminal) is hydroformylated and the 3-pentenoic ester
(the internal olefin) is hardly converted.
Rhodium can be used in various forms. The manner in which rhodium is added to the reaction mixture is not critical. Suitable rhodium compounds are water-soluble compounds and rhodium compounds which become water-soluble under reaction conditions. As a rule, the catalytically active complexes are started from a rhodium precursor
<EMI ID = 7.1>
Rh6 (CO) 16, Rh (NO3) 2, Rh (OAc) 2 and the substituted triphenylphosphine are formed in the reaction mixture. Rh (CO) 2 -acetylacetonate or Rh (OAc) 2 is preferably used as the rhodium precursor, this precursor forming a precursor of the active complex with the substituted triphenylphosphine in a solvent. This complex then forms the catalytically active complex with an excess of ligand (the substituted triphenylphosphine) in the reaction mixture.
The hydroformylation can take place in the presence or absence of an additional solvent in addition to water. In addition to the solvent, the reaction mixture will generally also contain an amount of high molecular by-products, methyl valerate and condensation products which are kept in circulation together with an amount of unreacted pentenoic ester.
Examples of suitable solvents are ketones such as acetophenone and cyclohexanone; ethers such as diethyl ether, anisole and diphenyl ether; aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene and xylene; paraffins such as hexane, heptane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane and isooctane and esters such as methyl benzoate and methyl valerate. Aromatic and / or paraffinic solvents are preferably used. Solvent mixtures can also be used.
The weight ratio of organic phase (pentenoic acid ester + optional solvent) and water is generally between 10:90 and 90:10.
The weight ratio of water to pentenoic acid ester is generally between 10:90 and 90:10.
The pH of the water phase is generally between 5.8 and 10. The pH of the water phase during hydroformylation is preferably not higher than 8.5, because otherwise the ester group can hydrolyze.
The (carbon monoxide / hydrogen) pressure is generally between 0.1 and 10 MPa. Preferably, the pressure is between 0.2 and 5 MPa.
The carbon monoxide to hydrogen molar ratio is generally between 1: 4 and 4: 1. Preferably, this ratio will be between 1: 1 and 1: 2.
The temperature is generally between 40 and
150 [deg.] C and preferably between 80 and 120 [deg.] C.
The rhodium concentration is generally between 50-700 ppm.
The molar ratio of rhodium and substituted triphenylphosphine is between 1:10 and 1: 2000. Preferably between 1:40 and 1: 200.
Example I
A 150 ml Hastalloy-C autoclave (Parr) was charged under nitrogen with 5.7 mg Rh (CO) 2acac and 30 ml aqueous solution containing 70.8 mmol / 1 tris (m-sulfonatophenyl) phosphine as sodium salt (TPPTS) . The autoclave was closed and purged with nitrogen. After this, the autoclave was heated to 110 in about 10 min and then pressured to 1.0 MPa with CO / H2 (1-: 1). A mixture of 3-pentenoic acid methyl ester (3.29 g), 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester (0.69 g) and n-nonane (internal standard, 0.49 g) in 19 g of toluene was injected into the autoclave under pressure. During the reaction, a pressure of 1.0 MPA and a temperature of 110 [deg.] C was maintained while stirring at 1200 rpm. The composition was checked at regular intervals using GLC. Table 1 shows the results.

These Examples were performed in the same manner as Example I wherein the ratio of 3- and 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester and the ratio of ligand and rhodium was varied with the total amount of pentenoic acid methyl ester and rhodium being equal to the amounts of Example I (except for Example VII and VIII). The water / toluene ratio (vol / vol) was equal to 1. In Examples VII and VIII, the addition of toluene is omitted and additional mixture of 3- and 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester is added, so that the total volume of pentenoic esters is 30 ml amount. In Example III, the H2 / CO ratio was equal to 2. The results are shown in Table 1.
Comparative Experiment A
Example 1 was repeated except that 1.24 g of triphenylphosphine (Ph3P) was used as a ligand and no water was used. The reaction was performed on a mixture of 3-pentenoic acid methyl ester (4.51 g) and 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester (0.62 g).
Example IX
The isomerization of the 3-pentenoic acid methyl ester (step a) was carried out by a mixture of 50 g of 3-pentenoic acid methyl ester with 5 g of a zeolite type Y catalyst containing 0.5 wt% palladium at
Stir at 135 [deg.] C in a glass vessel for 360 seconds. The resulting reaction mixture contained 4 g of 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester, 0.05 g of cis 2-pentenoic acid methyl ester and 0.1 g of trans 2-pentenoic acid methyl ester and 45.8 g of 3-pentenoic acid methyl ester.
After the catalyst was separated, the mixture was distilled with a "Spalt" distillation column (25 trays) at 250 mbar and a reflux ratio of 20. Distillation continued until 7.7 grams of a mixture of pentenoic acid methyl ester separated at the top of the column. This mixture was 49% 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester. The remaining (bottom) mixture was returned to the isomerization step.
With 4 g of the mixture obtained by the distillation, the hydroformylation (step b) was carried out by repeating Example 1 at 140 [deg.] C. The hydroformylation results are shown in Table 1.
Examples X and XI
<EMI ID = 8.1>
(Table 1: Ar3P) wherein the ratio of 3- and 4-pentenoic acid methyl ester and the ratio of ligand and rhodium was varied with the total amount of pentenoic acid methyl ester and rhodium being equal to the amounts of Example I.
A comparison of the results of Examples I-XI and comparative experiment A teaches that by using sulfonated or carboxylated triphenylphosphine it is possible to selectively convert a 4-pentenoic alkyl ester to the linear aldehyde from a mixture of 3- and 4-pentenoic acid alkyl esters while this is less selective when using an unsubstituted triphenylphosphine as a ligand. In addition, it appears that the n / iso ratio and selectivity to the 5-formylvaleric acid alkyl ester is significantly better with the same conversion of the 4-pentenoic alkyl ester when the sulfonated triphenylphosphine is used as a ligand in the hydroformylation.
Example IX shows that if the hydroformylation reaction is carried out according to the method according to the invention, it is possible in a simple manner to start from a 3-pentenoic alkyl ester by means of an isomerization step and a simple distillation to prepare the 5-formylvaleric acid alkyl ester with high selectivity.
