<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

EMI3.1
(fig. en 5) en een verticale C (fig. en 5). 2) of hoekverschil 6 (fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
5) de verticale as C (fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Sled9frame to tow bike or motorcycle.
The invention relates to the transport of two-wheelers behind a vehicle by means of towing, wherein the front and rear wheels of the two-wheeler are in rolling contact with the road. The two-wheeled carriage is held straight by the carriage via the towing frame.
The two-wheeler is also steered through the towing frame in such a way that it always follows the car. The problem of transporting two-wheelers has already found numerous solutions. Until now, the transport of a two-wheeled car has mainly been done with the help of a trailer or an even more expensive transport car. The general character of these known techniques is that they are expensive and the storage requires a large storage space. The towing frame according to the invention can be constructed at a lower price than a trailer and is also so compact that it can be stored in the luggage compartment of each car or hung against a wall to save space.
The prior art of the above subject is disclosed in Harold Robbins' Canadian Patent No. 952933. The design according to this Canadian patent does not allow lateral movement (the design does not have a vertical pivot shaft), which will certainly cause problems when cornering. Furthermore, the Canadian system uses two t. o. v. rigidly connected beams to mechanically connect the two-wheeler to the vehicle, as a result of which the load on the pivot points during towing will be very heavy.
The main idea of the invention is a new very compact and safe towing frame with good driving characteristics which, when rigidly connected to the front hinged part of the two-wheeler, serves to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
two-wheeler with front and rear wheels of these in rolling contact with the road. The two-wheeler is hereby held straight, steered, accelerated and braked by a towing vehicle via this towing frame. The possible solution in which one wheel of the two-wheeler is carried by the towing vehicle was found unfavorable due to the weight of some engines (even over 300 Kg for some models). About half of this weight would have to be carried by the towing vehicle, which would drastically change the driving characteristics of an average family car.
This led to a further search in the direction of towing the two-wheeler behind a car, whereby both wheels of the two-wheeler are in rolling contact with the road and the weight of the two-wheeler is only carried by its own wheels.
The solution is a towing frame that is simultaneously connected to the front hinged part of the two-wheeler and to the towing vehicle. The towing frame itself is actually nothing more than the set of constructions that connect the hinge axes of the towing frame in a specific way, which will be described after the explanation of the figures, so that the two-wheeler only has that freedom of movement that is necessary for towing.
Figure 1 shows in perspective a possible embodiment of the type B towing frame, according to the invention, in which the mounted frame is connected to a car and an engine and the hinge axes are made visible.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the towing frame in Figure 1 on a reduced scale, with a height difference H between the towing vehicle and two-wheeler.
Figure 3 also shows a side view of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
towing frame in figure 1 on a reduced scale, but now with an angle difference 6 in the vertical plane between two-wheeler and towing vehicle.
Figure 4 shows a top view of the towing frame in Figure 2 during a short turn.
Figure 5 shows in perspective one possible embodiment of a type A towing frame, according to the invention, wherein the frame is split into its separate parts and wherein the imaginary hinge axes connect the parts.
Figure 6 shows the top view of the towing frame in Figure 5 on a reduced scale and without an attachment, but now in a fully assembled condition, connected to an engine and a car.
Figure 7 is the side view of Figure 6.
It goes without saying that the different reference letters and numbers relating to the same mechanical parts and pivot shafts will also be indicated by the same corresponding signs in the different figures.
The towing frame according to the invention is characterized by three hinge axes, two of which are horizontal A and B.
EMI3.1
(fig. and 5) and a vertical C (fig. and 5). The two horizontal pivot shafts are required to compensate for a possible height difference H (fig. 2) or angle difference 6 (fig. 3) between the towed two-wheeler and the towing vehicle. The vertical axis is necessary to make the angle difference (fig. 4) between the longitudinal axis of the towing vehicle and the longitudinal axis of the two-wheeler when cornering. Any other hinged freedom is denied this design. In other words ; it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
towing frame has no other hinged freedom of movement under these conditions.
From this it follows that the front hinged part of the two-wheeler always remains upright in relation to the towing vehicle. This also means that the force that the two-wheeler wants to overturn in a bend is transmitted via the towing frame to the suspension of the towing vehicle. It is therefore necessary that the towing frame offers sufficient resistance to twisting, so that every part of the towing frame and also the entirety of the connections (both within the towing frame itself and between the frame and the vehicle and between the frame and two-wheeler) must be strong enough to withstand these forces. without too much deformation of the towing frame.
The following are some more features that more accurately define this tow frame for which this patent application is filed. The towing frame is connected to the towing vehicle via the vehicle mounting a (fig. 1 and 5) which contains either a vertical pivot axis C (fig. 5) or a horizontal pivot axis B (fig. 1).
The vehicle mounting a (fig. 1 and 5) can be connected directly to the towing vehicle or placed on the fixed part of a detachable towbar installation that is fixed to the car. To avoid confusion, from now on the following text distinguishes between two types of drag frames, depending on how the hinge axes A, B and C (fig. 1 and 2) t. o. v. prevent each other and be connected. If the vehicle mounting a (fig. 5) contains the vertical axis C (fig. 5), this is now called a type A towing frame. If the vehicle mounting a (fig. 1) contains the horizontal axis B (fig. 1), it now acts on a type B towing frame.
The construction that rigidly connects the hinge shafts B and C (fig. 1 and 5) is called T-piece ss (fig. 1 and 5) and this both
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
for a type A and type B towing frame
The construction connecting the horizontal axis A (fig. 1 and 5) to either the vertical axis C (fig. 1) or the horizontal axis B (fig. 5) is called the actual frame r (fig. 1 and 5). For a type A towing frame, the actual frame y (fig. 5) is the rigid connection of the horizontal axis A (fig. 5) with the horizontal axis B (fig. 5).
For type B, the actual frame y (fig. 1) is the rigid connection of the horizontal axis A (fig. 1) with the vertical axis C (fig. 1). The towing frame of both type A and type B is connected to the two-wheeler by means of the two-wheeler attachment b (fig. 5), which always contains the horizontal pivot axis A (fig. 1 and 5). This one
EMI5.1
two-wheeler mounting Ò (fig. no
5) necessarily need to be the front wheel axle as shown in the drawings. The two-wheeler attachment b (fig. 5) must in any case be rigidly connected somewhere to the front part of the two-wheeler, which is hingedly connected via the steering head to the frame of the two-wheeler, for example the front fork, the front wheel axle or the handlebar.
Because the towing frame is connected to the two-wheeler via a horizontal hinged axle A (fig. 1 and 5), the front wheel of the two-wheeler always follows the towing vehicle. The parts fui, y and b (fig. 1 and 5) are hingedly connected to each other via their respective common pivot axes A, B and C (fig. 1 and 5) and thus form the towing frame according to the invention. The towing frame can also be provided with an attachment E (fig. 5) that will strengthen the connection between two-wheeler and towing frame. This reinforcement is only useful if a strong connection is not possible due to technical conditions.
This attachment is hingedly connected to the towing frame around the pivot axis A (fig. 5) and is coupled via a rigid connection to the front hinged part of the two-wheeler.

The towing frame according to the invention can be made of any material that ensures mechanical strength and does not make the construction too large and too heavy.
A possible but not limiting embodiment of this invention is presented in detail below with reference to Figures 5, 6 and 7. In Figure 5, the parts are indicated alphanumerically to illustrate the following description. Figures 6 and 7 are used to gain a better understanding of the towing frame and the connections of all parts to each other and to the vehicle and two-wheeler.
This specific type A towing frame consists of five main parts: - the vehicle mounting α - the tee ss - the actual frame y - the two-wheel attachment - the possible accessory.
In this embodiment, the vehicle mounting a; with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
towing vehicle connected by screwing it with two bolts onto the fixed part 1 connected to the car of a detachable towbar. This vehicle mounting consists of a steel plate 2 with two holes 3 and 4 on which the beam 5 with cylindrical hole 6 is welded perpendicularly. The shaft 8 of the T-piece f3, which is tightened with the lock nut 7, enters this hole 6.
The T-piece f3, which, as appears from the shape of the T, connects the vertical pivot axis C perpendicularly to the horizontal axis B, consists of a round tube 11 from which a piece of material has been milled to place the beam 9 perpendicular to it. the longitudinal axis of tube 11, and then connect it to a weld. The beam 9 has a cylindrical hole 10 in which shaft 8 is placed and welded. Bushes 12 and 13 are welded into round tube 11, one at each end. The sleeves 12 and 13 have a cylindrical hole in which the spindle 14 fits correctly.
The actual frame y consists of two parallel beams 17 and 18 with a connecting beam 19 welded between them. The distance between the two parallel bars is slightly greater than the length of the two-wheeler front wheel axle 26. In order to reinforce the actual frame y it is possible to weld two triangular plates 20 and 21 between beams 17, 18 and 19. On the side of the towing vehicle, two bushes 15 and 16 are welded into beams 17 and 18 so that the T-piece just fits in between. Bush 15 has internal threads corresponding to the external threads on the front of spindle 14. At the other end, spindle 14 has a hexagonal head with which it can be tightened. The spindle 14 then passes through the bushes 15 and 16 and tube 11 of the tee f3.
On the two-wheeler side, two bushes 22 and 23 are also welded into beams 17 and 18. Bushings 22 and 23 have internal threads where one holds shaft holders 24 and 25
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
can screw in. These axle holders 24 and 25, which are approximately three centimeters longer than buses 22 and 23, are externally threaded and have a hole at the front with the same diameter as the protruding ends of the special front wheel axle 26 and they are provided at the rear with a hole with internal thread in which the attachment can be turned.
The shaft holders 24 and 25 have a hexagonal head at the rear which is turned against the bushes 22 and 23, so that their front always protrudes from the bushes 22 and 23 with a fixed length.
The two-wheel mount 5 in this case is a special front wheel axle 26 which is the size of an original front wheel axle with the difference that it is three centimeters longer at both ends so that this mount 6, when mounted in the front wheel fork, protrudes three centimeters on each side . There is also a hexagonal hole on this side 26 on one side, which is therefore mounted in the two-wheeler using an Allen key.
The axle holders 24 and 25 can then slide over these cylindrical projecting parts of the axle 26 in order to safely establish the hinged connection between the two-wheeler and the towing frame.
The attachment can strengthen the connection towing frame with two-wheeler if a very heavy two-wheeler is standard equipped with a very thin front wheel axle. This attachment e can be used on one or two sides of the frame by screwing it into the back of an axle holder 24 or 25. It consists of a shaft 27 with an external screw thread on the front corresponding to the internal screw thread of shaft holders 24 and 25 on which, hinged around a steel spindle 28, there is a profile 29 which has a flat side at the other end, with a hole 30 therein, through which the rigidly fixed to the front fork 31 with bolt 32 of the brake caliper 33.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
It goes without saying that the shape, dimensions, material used and mutual arrangement of the parts described above may differ and some of these parts may be replaced by others pursuing the same purpose. The device can also be supplemented with other parts which could improve its practical operation.
