<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Insect repellent.
This invention relates to a repellant for insects.
More specifically, it concerns a repellant intended to be applied to the user's skin.
It is known that N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide, better known under the abbreviation DEET, is often used in insect repellant compositions. Indeed, it has hitherto been regarded as the most active ingredient to be employed in such compositions.
However, diethyl toluamide is known to be highly toxic, which means that an insect repellent based on this material can pose a serious hazard to the user through negligent or incorrect use.
Accordingly, the laws of many countries require that the amount of diethyl toluamide present in an insect repellent should not exceed 20% of the total composition. However, this limitation creates the disadvantage that the intensity of the repellant and the duration of the effective action after its application to the skin are also limited.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In addition, there is a tendency that the use of diethyl toluamide in insect repellents should be further limited, this to 10%. However, a repellant containing the only active component diethyltoluamide, making up 10% of the total composition, is no longer effective.
Accordingly, the present invention contemplates an insect repellent which is relatively low in toxicity to the aforementioned known compositions, but very effective.
For this purpose, the invention consists of a repellant for insects, more particularly an agent intended to be applied to the skin, characterized in that as active ingredients it comprises at least, on the one hand, undecylenic acid and / or one or more of its derivatives, and, on the other hand, contains diethyl toluamide (DEET).
The use of undecylenic acid and / or several of its derivatives can limit the use of diethyltoluamide without diminishing the effectiveness of the repellent.
In addition, the combination of diethyltoluamide with undecylenic acid and / or one or more of its derivatives produces a synergistic effect, as a result of which it can be said that the combination of the aforementioned two components provides a better repellent than the use of either component.
With the insight to better demonstrate the features according to the invention, some preferred embodiments are described below as examples without any limiting character.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In a preferred embodiment, the repellant contains at least 5% of undecylenic acid and / or of one or more derivatives thereof.
Preferably the repellant contains at least 5% diethyltoluamide.
More specifically, the repellant preferably contains at least 5% of undecylenic acid and / or one or more derivatives thereof, in combination with at least 5% of diethyltoluamide.
In a further preferred embodiment, the repellant contains equal or substantially equal amounts of, on the one hand, undecylenic acid and / or one or more derivatives thereof, and, on the other hand, diethyl toluamide.
It is preferred here that the amount of undecylenic acid and / or its derivatives, as well as the amount of diethyl toluamide, each be 8 to 12% of the total composition of the repellent. More particularly, it is preferred that the repellant consists of 10% undecylenic acid and / or one or more derivatives thereof, while it also consists of 10% diethyltoluamide.
Although use can be made of the derivatives of undecylenic acid, it is preferred that pure undecylenic acid be used, having the formula
EMI3.1
CH = CH-) - COOH. z o The whole is preferably dissolved in a solution consisting of water and alcohol or is emulsified.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It is clear that other repellents, whether active or not, can be added to the repellant, such as a perfume.
The repellent can be made in the form of a liquid or in the form of a cream.
All the aforementioned percentages are percentages by volume (vol.%).
For the undecylenic acid, which is liquid above 23 degrees Celsius, and for its derivatives, the percentages are valid for the liquid state.
The aforementioned synergic effect was verified, inter alia, by means of the experiment described below.
In this experiment, a volunteer placed his insect repellant forearm every hour for 10 minutes in a cage containing 25 starving mosquitoes (Anopheles stephensi).
The experiment was conducted at a temperature of 20-22 * C and was repeated for the following three compositions: - 5% DEET in 30% alcohol - 5% undecylenic acid (UND) in 30% alcohol - 5% DEET + 5% undecylenic acid in 30% alcohol The results are tabulated for the three compositions below. In this table, the abbreviation L refers to the number of landings, in other words, the number of times a mosquito has settled on the forearm. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
abbreviation B refers to the number of bites. The results clearly indicate the existence of a synergic effect.
